No matter how you style them?

Cardigans are Frumpy.
They are a small notch up from a fleece or gilet but only just.
Wouldn't be seen dead in one.

Missushbb · 18/04/2021 20:20

Men might not be described as frumpy but they definitely can be frumpy!

DrSbaitso · 18/04/2021 20:21

Nothing looks frumpy on a size 8 catalogue model. That's why they use them. Even frumpy stuff just takes on that ironic super demure prissy look; the entire point is that it should look frumpy but doesn't because the model would look gorgeous in a bin bag.

I definitely think some people wear some cardigans well; they come in all styles. But I don't think a young stunner pulling the look off will necessarily translate to the likes of me.

Doghead · 18/04/2021 20:21

I think every cardigan in every picture on here looks frumpy. People are being swayed by the pretty girl in the photo. Take away her head and yes, the cardigan is frumpy. There's just no getting away from it I'm afraid.

mumofthemonsters808 · 18/04/2021 20:21

I adore them, I bet there is a huge demand at the moment, I reckon sales are through the roof, I’ve had mine on and off all day couldn’t work out if I was hot or cold,I suppose they can look frumpy but I don’t care.I like the longer ones

Camomila · 18/04/2021 20:21

I love cardigans, I prefer slim fitting ones to loose drapey ones though. They smarten up the rest of my outfit (jeans, t-shirt, converse most of the time)

Doghead · 18/04/2021 20:23

And now I'm getting adverts for friggin cardigans popping up in my phone. Sod off!!! 😂

SarahBellam · 18/04/2021 20:24

Cardigans are perfect for those of generous norkage. You can wear a v neck or lowish cut top or dress, and then wear an open cardigan over. Cardigans are pure style. Jumpers however are a bit of a one trick pony.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 18/04/2021 20:25

The idea that all clothing needs to be flattering is outdated and limiting. I love a good baggy cardy!

CirqueDeMorgue · 18/04/2021 20:26

If you're a bit chunky, most thinks will look 'frumpy.'

I’d rather be “outdated” than wear intentionally unflattering clothing.

Call me nuts but I don’t aim to look as bad as possible. There’s plenty of flattering comfortable clothing about so really quite silly to suggest it’s limiting to wear clothes that suit you.

eaglejulesk · 18/04/2021 20:30

Does it make you feel better to come on MN showing how superior you are to those who wear cardigans OP?

KizzyWayfarer · 18/04/2021 20:30

Well this is interesting. I shall file ‘some people think all cardigans are frumpy’ with ‘some people eat weetabix with hot milk’ and ‘toilet brushes are controversial’. Mumsnet is very good for widening the mind and discovering that opinions you took for granted are not universal!

Condenast · 18/04/2021 20:30

Make me look like Mrs Brown or Mrs Doubtfire!

MammaSchwifty · 18/04/2021 20:36

@HeadNorth

In fairness to the OP, she did not specify the sex of the person wearing the cardigan, so why are posters leaping to assume it only refers to women? The be-cardiganed male is seldom presented as a sex God leading male figure, in my experience.

Kurt Cobain looked pretty good in a cardi...

Doghead · 18/04/2021 20:39

And hoodies. Also frumpy.

Jesus christ! There's always one...
Sparrowfeeder · 18/04/2021 20:39

WellI wear cardigans and dresses with leggings and I dgaf if I am frumpy or not! I am warm and comfortable...Grin

MammaSchwifty · 18/04/2021 20:41

I think the spectrum of cardis is too broad to say they are all frumpy. Depends greatly on the wearer, too.

I quite like them I suppose, I prefer larger chunky grandad type ones, or wraparound ballet styles in a soft knit for some waist emphasis

Roszie · 18/04/2021 20:43

I like one but I agree.

And all the photos posted just confirm that.

TheBullfinch · 18/04/2021 20:43

I'd kill to look as frumpy as this.

Chop off her head and all you've got is a frumpy outfit. True story.
babbaloushka · 18/04/2021 20:47

My DD wears some lovely cropped ones with jeans or over a little strappy dress. I always think it looks really good, and played that she is keeping herself warm Grin

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2021 20:47

I think cardigans are definitely frumpy. And coats. And jackets. Trousers of all descriptions. Dresses are frumpy. Skirts, just frump central really.

Shirts. Hats. Scarves. Bags. Hairstyles of any kind. Jewellery. All accessories. Wallpaper. Leather sofas. Socks. Be careful of all shoes particularly high heels. And low heels. Boots are a no no. As are sandals. No trainers are really frump free tbf. Avoid footwear altogether.

Do not wear a belt. Especially with skinny jeans and mom jeans and flares and boyfriend jeans. And don’t do a french tuck. Or have a fringe. Or a side parting. Or a middle parting. All frumpy.

Aldi is particularly frumpy. So is Waitrose.

Dogs can be a bit frumpy too. And rabbits.

Call the Midwife - dead frumpy imho. And ageing.

Only thing that’s not frumpy is llamas.

Hth.
