To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

514 replies

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

It wouldn’t bother me at all but would appreciate knowing in advance
I usually download a few films and programmes to my iPad in case I get bored
No tv would be a deal breaker for DP - one reason we don’t always go away on holiday together

CandyLeBonBon · 16/04/2021 21:54

@PutTheCakeDOWN

It’s not a business! 😂🙄🙈
Well if you're earning extra income from it, then HMRC would beg to differ!
UrAWizHarry · 16/04/2021 21:56

Next it will be "I'm not a business so do I really have to clean my air bnb?".

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/04/2021 21:59

Here’s what I’ve got to offer. Like it? Please book! Don’t like it? Please book somewhere else that you will like!’

This is what people looking for accommodation do all the time, so that's fair enough. Hopefully therefore you don't need many bookings to keep you afloat as you don't have a very client-centric view of the world.

Randommother · 16/04/2021 21:59

No TV would be a plus point for me - I never watch TV on holiday though, and dont have one in my living room at home. Without a TV the focal point of the room changes, and to me it feels more sociable. That said, mine is probably a minority view, and most people would expect one.

If weren't for those pesky tourists, it'd be perfect!
LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/04/2021 22:04

As long as there is wifi good enough to stream on it would be fine.

I don't if on a Greek island, for example, but in the UK where we might not want or be able to go out every night, I would like the option of some screen time. DH and I are with each other 24/7 these days, and we do on occasion run out of things to say to each other.
1Morewineplease · 16/04/2021 22:30

Having read all of your posts, I'm not exactly sure why you're doing Airbnb.
You don't want to advertise and you aren't in hospitality.
Yet you are offering a place to stay in, which is hospitality.
If your on Airbnb then you ARE advertising.

Probably best to aim for people who love solitude but, as pp have mentioned, you'll need to provide maybe a stereo with CDs, books, games, local magazines or other distractions.
Not having a tv might appeal to some visitors but a lack of wi-fi will probably put most people off and you might need to provide a phone...particularly as you've said your signal is poor

Divineswirls · 16/04/2021 22:40

I have never watched TV on holiday but the DC do.

No decent WiFi though would be far worse than no TV

Horridcreature · 16/04/2021 22:47

OP - think you may be ok for this year. Holidays in the UK are very popular and booking easily. There are also people prefer/not bothered by lack of TV. when things are less crowded and easier to book you won’t get people staying so you need to keep good ratings.

At the moment there is a pretty big outlay such as cleaning costs.

maggienolia · 16/04/2021 22:51

Actually The Bill is still on the Drama channel at 12 noon on weekdays.
The otters and seals prefer classic Eastenders though.

Nat6999 · 16/04/2021 22:53

If there is crap broadband then the chance is the mobile phone signal will be useless as well which means visitor's devices will be unusable. Sort the broadband signal if you insist on having no TV.

@RampantIvy

How is saying what I like to do a superior attitude? I am not interested in watching tv and rarely do it at home let alone on holiday.

Because it does come across as superior. I don't always watch TV, but I don't post on social media saying so. Besides, where can you watch otters and seals on a dark, miserable night in inland UK?

So on a thread asking about putting a tv in holiday accommodation I'm not allowed to say why I wouldn't want one on holiday.

As for your ridiculous question, I obviously not holiday inland to watch otters and seals. Why would you think I did? Hmm

sarsonswine · 16/04/2021 23:26

@PutTheCakeDOWN

I wasn't aware that one had to have approved interests to post on MN.

You’ve not been here long then eh? 😂

Longer than you have I expect 😁

It was just the way you came across, like watching otters and seals outside your window is so much more wholesome than watching the TV.

I mean, you can look out of the window and have a TV in the same room. It's not like they're mutually exclusive activities!

So I can't say what I enjoy on holiday then? I don't like watching tv, I do like watching wildlife so I go on holiday where I can do what I enjoy and I don't want a tv as I don't enjoy it.

But a TV being in the room doesn't stop you doing what you want, does it? You can still watch wildlife while a TV sits turned off in the corner.

Whereas a lack of TV would stop some people from doing what they want, which is to, well, watch TV.

God I'm glad I don't know you IRL, you don't know when to stop do you ?

Here, have a bone to chew on 🤣

@ClarkeGriffin

In the words of joey, you don't have a TV? what's all your furniture pointed at? Grin

Get a TV. It may be a pain, but you'll reduce the amount of people who will book if you don't.

ArcheryAnnie · 17/04/2021 01:40

Put or don't put whatever you like in your BnB - as long as it's clear in the description exactly what's on offer, and what isn't. So in your case I'd be clear that there's no TV, and that your internet is patchy.

You will still get people who want to, eg, go somewhere to write, or to read, or whatever. I love telly, but plenty of people who also love it wouldn't mind a few days away from it.

Pugdogmom · 17/04/2021 01:52

Personally I wouldn't book somewhere without a TV. I want to be out and about during day, but DH has chronic fatigue so he needs a nap late afternoon/ early evening so I would want something to watch while he naps. Or if self catering, we might want to cook or bring in a takeaway or just have a drink and relax in an evening, and not everyone reads. If the internet is shit, then may not be possible to stream something .
Abroad, it's easier, because he can nap and we can have a later dinner, but here many restaurants shut earlier, especially in remote areas.

sashh · 17/04/2021 07:12

Hey otters are not as cute as they look, one trued to steal a friend's phone.

OK this was in Japan in an otter cafe but news travels fast in the mustelid world.

OP if you put a TV in your guests might be over un by animai obsessed otters, which actually could be a selling point.

MagpieSong · 17/04/2021 07:21

I think it’s be odd. You’d go out walking in the day and perhaps settle to watch a film in an evening? It’s unlikely a huge percentage of people wouldn’t want something on to relax to while doing other bits. It’s not really an either or situation, we love love long walks and go on walking holidays, doesn’t mean by evening we don’t fancy a film sometimes. Though other times we listen to an audiobook instead.

drspouse · 17/04/2021 08:02

Is this a tax dodge, buy lots of new furniture and pay for a cleaner to do your house too and then don't actually let it out but put the expenses through on your taxes?

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 08:07

It's all about choice really. We don't watch TV every evening, but we have the choice to do so or not.

Although, if I was staying somewhere where I could see otters, seals and other wildlife out of my window it would take precedence over the TV.
