To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

Lovely secluded accommodation in AONB.
No TV.
Shit wifi.
Switch off and enjoy the view.

Some may say yes

wesowereonabreak · 16/04/2021 18:09

I don't think OP understands what a business is, tbf

you know when you read that xyz businesses don't make it past the first year or 2.. that's why! Grin

Yep, I think you may be right Grin
GabsAlot · 16/04/2021 18:10

I wouldn't mind if there were decent internet but as there not I would like something to watch

PatsArrow · 16/04/2021 18:11

Air B&B ad

Lovely walks
Lovely views
No TV
Shit Wifi

Owner not in hospitality
Owner not running a business.

Where do I book?

NotMeNoNo · 16/04/2021 18:11

Just make it clear that there is no TV and no Internet and suitable for "getting away from it all". You'll soon find from bookings whether there's a market. I would find no internet pretty tricky, checking weather forecast or directions to somewhere is often useful even in an outdoors holiday.

Horridcreature · 16/04/2021 18:12

The views may be wonderful but if you happen to pick a week when the weather is horrid you’d be stuck. I wouldn’t be surprised if the WiFi was worse in those circumstances. However if you make it clear then it some as on here may not be bothered.

Embracelife · 16/04/2021 18:14

Is mobile signal crap as well?

AndreaMarteau · 16/04/2021 18:14

@PutTheCakeDOWN

Only on bloody mumsnet Grin
Yup, only on Mumsnet would you get someone asking for opinions, then ignoring the majority while saying they're just going to do what they originally planned anyway. Why ask if you don't care what people think?

On another note, theres barely any internet and no TV so you won't be able to watch "The Bill" of an evening. Is this AirBnB in the year 1998?

Embracelife · 16/04/2021 18:16

If no mobile signal you won't get for examples parents escaping away since they would not be contactable.
So only unencumbered people

NoseOfJericho · 16/04/2021 18:17

@rubyslippers

I’ve voted YABU I think as a family crowding round a tablet or laptop to watch a movie on a holiday isn’t great For many guests, a TV is a basic requirement so if you don’t do it, then you should make it super clear on the listing
The op states it is a couple/single adult place, not a family one.

It is good to have the option as a single or couple, but I wouldn't mind not having one. A supply of books would be good though, so that people could leave theirs and take different ones.

ChristmasFluff · 16/04/2021 18:17

I am your target audience.

I currently don't watch much TV and don't have an aerial - I have a firestick and connect to programmes I want via that (I am not about to miss an episode of Line of Duty, for example!) - but I do have shit-hot internet.

However, I love to go on holiday to places that have no TV, no internet, and no phone signal. It means work can't contact me, I can forget about the outside world, and relax. I need a radio though.

I think as long as you are clear with your offer, there will be people who take it up gladly - especially if there is a stock of books, maps, card games and board games.

I'm so surprised that people wonder what we do without TV. You know the things you do when you aren't watching TV? We do that for longer

speakout · 16/04/2021 18:17

Areas of " outstanding natural beauty" usually mean not much happening locally.
Weather in the UK is very unreliable. Even outdoorsy people don;t want to walk in lashing rain.
So if guests are stuck inside then they need some entertainment.
A box of dominoes won't cut it.

Tubs11 · 16/04/2021 18:18

I'd be fine with no TV, radio on the other hand I could not do without! I think if the weather isn't great then TV is probably essential if folk can't get out and you don't want your guests leaving bad reviews Grin

LovingBob · 16/04/2021 18:20

Since you have to book practically everything now because of Covid poor Wi-fi would be a bit shit as I bet mobile signal is shit as well. I would also want a TV for evenings.

speakout · 16/04/2021 18:23

That's a good situation to be in.
Many jobs are not like that however.
I am self employed. I do cancel my work, but if stuff goes wrong then I need to sort it out- otherwise I would come back to a shit storm
Same with my OH. He works for a small highly specialised tech company. He can't just walk away.
Many jobs are like this.

wesowereonabreak · 16/04/2021 18:26

I am a grown-up.
I can stay in a place with a tv and not watch it Shock

No internet or shit internet is a pain in the arse though.

80sMum · 16/04/2021 18:28

We've stayed in quite a few Airbnb properties on holiday. Sometimes we barely watch any TV at all for the whole holiday. Other times we watch something every evening.

It depends on the weather, specifically the weather in the evenings. If it's dry and warm enough to sit outside, that's where we will be all evening. If it's cold or wet, we'll be indoors and will probably watch TV for a while.

The last holiday we had, I can't actually remember whether there was a TV or not, as I don't think we watched it at all. The house did, however, have good WiFi. I remember using that to upload photos.

I definitely wouldn't much like a house with no Internet and no TV. I would feel very cut off.

notacooldad · 16/04/2021 18:28

I'm so surprised that people wonder what we do without TV. You know the things you do when you aren't watching TV?
When I go to AONB I want to walk and cycle. I don't want to be walking and cycling every minute though Especially if the weather is dreadful.
I struggle with reading so don't like reading books. I can't play board games by myself. So occasionally it's nice to unwind with the tv.

It’s not a business
What is it then - serious question?
Why did you want the opinions of the minority to decide whst to do?
This is either baffling or a hoax.

PurBal · 16/04/2021 18:34

It wouldn't bother me, but I don't watch TV when I'm on holiday.

NoseOfJericho · 16/04/2021 18:34

Do people no longer read?
My idea of a break is to enjoy peace and quiet, wander about a bit, eat and read, and read, and read...

Lancrelady80 · 16/04/2021 18:35

Everyone likes options - you're removing a fairly big one.

For me, not having a tv would be a red flag that this was a really basic operation, and I would not book. It wouldn't be lack of the tv itself, but a case of thinking, what else has been skimped? A tv of some sort is bog standard and has been for years, even if just a little 14 inch effort. Get a tv!

Only other way round it is to really sell yourself as a retreat from modern life, back to simpler times, kind of accommodation.
But you'd need to up the luxuries as compensation, most people looking for that kind of thing would expect a luxury retreat if you market yourself like that.

Just get a tv.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 16/04/2021 18:39

No, nobody else reads except you Hmm

Also, surprisingly enough, you can do ALL of those things with a TV sat, turned off, in the corner of the room.

I can't read when I am nackered, which I always am by night on holidays. I love reading, but brain and eyes (even with glasses) just refuse to cooperate. Mind numbing tv is a great choice for me before falling asleep then.
MadKittenWoman · 16/04/2021 18:41

YABVU. Get a TV. If you can't afford to have an aerial put up, then at least get a chrome cast so that people can cast from their own devices to the TV via wifi (I assume you will be providing that?) We often go to an AirBnB in London which has this set up.
