To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

The "outstanding natural beauty" won't be relevant later in the evening or at 7am if they have a toddler they need to entertain while they have a shower.

Movinghouseatlast · 16/04/2021 18:47

I run an Air BnB. It is a business and you are working in hospitality if you are charging money to the public.

Some people will book with no TV as long as it is clear.
.Having a Smart TV only needs a plug socket and Internet connection. I have this set up in one of my units.

I think if it's raining it's nice for people to have a TV. Lots of couples ( mine is couples too) walk all day and then watch telly for a bit in the evening.

A decent small smart TV is only a few hundred quid.

notacooldad · 16/04/2021 18:48

Do people no longer read?
Not really
Not unless you count maps and guide planners.
I don't feel any shame saying that.

Movinghouseatlast · 16/04/2021 18:49

I would also add that you need to make sure you have proper holiday let insurance with public liability

Abraxan · 16/04/2021 18:52

@PutTheCakeDOWN

No the internet is shit.

Not the responses I was hoping for 😂😂 thank you though, very helpful!

It’s quite a remote area, popular for walking and it’s lakeside so very picturesque. I think it would be a shame to sit in and watch The Bill but horses got courses!

I could always try it and see if people mention it...? As long as it’s super clear on the description?

So there's limited WiFi or limited mobile data? Or both? That would be an issue for watching on tablets generally. So a tv with the ability for people to slot in a fire stick or Apple TV would be useful.

And yes, outstanding beauty or not - if it's early morning or evening time then people might have had a full day of walking done/to do they might enjoy breakfast watching the news or evening meal with a glass of wine and watching a film together. Or maybe a cold or rainy day and they fancy a day chilling in the house.

We don't watch much tv in holidays or weekends away, but do occasionally.

IEat · 16/04/2021 18:52

I’d not book anywhere without a tv.
I made that mistake once at a b&b and bloody hell nights were boring, me and 6 yo
Yawn when he went to sleep

maddening · 16/04/2021 18:52

A couples rural spot has sweet FA in the way of stuff to do in the evening, couples would most likely want a TV after a day in the country and dinner at the local pub.

Abraxan · 16/04/2021 18:54

Also if the WiFi and mobile data is bad, please mention it. sometimes people go away but still have to work at times whilst there. Poor WiFi/mobile data could be an issue. I've seen it mentioned in descriptions so people can make a choice. Better to be upfront than to have your reviews keep mentioning.

serin · 16/04/2021 18:55

I hardly ever watch TV at home, just don't have time really. However, when we are away I love to snuggle up with DH and watch whatever mindless thing is on. Especially if we have been hiking all day.

yoshiblue · 16/04/2021 18:57

I don't watch much tv but absolutely wouldn't book anywhere without one. Ideally I'd want a smart tv too (so we can easily log into Netflix)

Abraxan · 16/04/2021 19:03

I don’t understand going away with your family which you probably don’t spend much time with in normal life, well at least as much as you’d like, and then glue your eyes to a screen

Well after this year I've spent an awful lot of time with my dh and, until she went to university, with Dd too.
On a non-covid time I see dh every morning and every evening for a few hours, and all weekends almost every weekend of the year.

And on holiday we'd be spending all day every day with one another. I think we'd cope watching a film or two with a glass of wine, chatting about what's on the screen.

But we are capable of watching a tv and not focuses purely on the screen, but chatting and enjoying each other's company at the same time. 🤷‍♀️

OP has gone?

MerryMarigold · 16/04/2021 19:09

@Hardbackwriter

The issue is that if you're married to my DH, it WILL go on, like it or not. If there isn't one, or only DVDs, we will be forced to agree on movies and he will not be tempted to 'zone out'.

Well I'm not married to your DH... And tbh I think it's a bit horrible (and controlling) to deliberately book somewhere without a facility that he clearly wants to use because you don't want him to.

He doesn't actually WANT to mindlessly watch rubbish, he just can't help himself. It's just habit, like biting your nails. Remove TV, give him other options, and he has a fantastic time, as he would tell you...if you were married to him!
Ponoka7 · 16/04/2021 19:10

"What do you do in the evening?
Play with kids/reading books. Kids to bed. Make supper. Chat with husband. Gardening. Do my crafty stuff. Generally potter. Read. Have a bath. Phone friends. Walk dog. Work. Have friends round. "All sorts!"

But that's at home, not away somewhere remote. As for reading, it cuts you off from whoever you are with. Watching a bit of television, or a DVD doesn't. Are you going to allow dogs? If not that cuts out dog walking.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 16/04/2021 19:16

I expect a tv when I go away. The only places I wouldn't expect is glamping places (although would like on).

Doingtheboxerbeat · 16/04/2021 19:17

I prefere to stand under a waterfall to bathe ,so having no running water in the property wouldn't bother me at all.

I am in tears of laughter at this thread and i remember why I love MN.

A waterfall? How common. You should be bathing in a dirty stream and washing your underwear there at the same time Grin
wesowereonabreak · 16/04/2021 19:27

Don't you go and piss off the otters with your dirty underwear! How dare you!

The seals are a bit more feisty, but the otters? Come on.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 16/04/2021 19:29

I'd expect a TV. I'm a single mum and travel with my young daughter. We wouldn't be going out in the evening and would want a TV.

Isadora2007 · 16/04/2021 19:32

Tv. If the WiFi hadn’t been shit I’d have said you’d get away with it. But not if you’re saying it’s poor.

Otters are so modern though!

The holiday lets I go to have trilobites and stegosaurus' outside the caves' entrance.

Thebirdstbeseathebirds · 16/04/2021 19:39

Put a tv and a cheap dvd/Blu ray in - if the internet is so rubbish that Netflix won’t work then forewarn guests or get a few old DVDs in from a charity shop.
Nothing like watching an old movie you haven’t seen in years or similar on holiday - there will be rainy days presumably... plus you can play the radio through the tv too.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 16/04/2021 19:44

Not interested in TV, but I would want good Wi-fi. I’d expect to be forewarned about the lack of tv and for it to be a bit cheaper.

Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 19:47

It's horrid without a tele. When it rains or if phone has poor reception or using up data it's good to have a tv that actually shows a few channels. Bonus for wifi connected smart tele.
