To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

No, not planning a career in hospitality!

I have a small self contained accommodation which friends usually stay in. I’m considering putting it on Airbnb. If we get bookings, great. If not - no problem!

That IS hospitality!

If you are so unbothered about whether or not you get bookings, then why start the thread?

Just to gauge opinion really.

Are you ok? You are very hostile, and seem to just be coming back posting attacking posts at me every few minutes! It’s ok - you won’t have to stay here, just chill ;)

I won’t be having a website or letterheads.

I think you’re all getting a bit carried away 😂

Providing accomodations IS working in hospitality. Whether it's 1 booking a month or 10...

Look, you obviously don't wnat the tv there. Fine. Just make sure people know it. By that I mean capital letters everywhere, because people don't often read things properly.

At the very least though you should look at some equipment to help the internet, if there is any, or look at change of provider to non wired if they get better network there.

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 17:56

That IS hospitality!

It’s hardly a career in hospitality

I think no TV is fine IF and ONLY IF there is excellent wifi.

To have neither is definitely a no-no.

Last summer we rented a lovely welsh farmhouse near a beach.
No live TV, no wifi, and no phone signal. There was a TV and DVD with a (very small) selection of DVDs.

It was frankly a super pain, especially since we had a lot of rain. One thing we realised is that we couldn't google anything local - restaurants, walks, attractions and so on. And we couldn't book a restaurant without driving to the end of the drive.

Inanun2 · 16/04/2021 17:57

We have just booked a house with no TV for our holiday, family of 4 (2 young adults) in UK.
It was listed as not having TV, I thought it was strange but would not have even thought about it had it not been mentioned. I still booked as it’s in location we want and I think it will be nice to not have the distraction of TV which we would prob switch on if we had one but just out of habit not because we want to watch anything.
The thing is we do not have TVs when we go abroad and that is exactly the sort of holiday I am hoping for, mooching, walks, meals out and time together.

redcarbluecar · 16/04/2021 17:57

I don’t think I’d be bothered as long as there was wi fi. As long as you make it clear.

Just to gauge opinion really.

Quick tip.

If you try to gauge opinion from potential customers or users of similar services, you should listen, not just do "Oh. But I still don't wanna" when majority gives different opinion to what you wanted to hear.

Not everyone is desperate to appeal to the majority. And not should they be. The minority want places to stay too :)

But you're still working in that industry, and hospitality is about making people happy.

One bad review can kill a business dead. Yes, you could agree to add a TV later on if people ask for once, but the bad reviews saying "No TV and shit internet" can't be deleted.

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 18:01

Ah, that poor put-upon minority that can't find somewhere that doesn't have a TV! Grin

So I assume you won't be declaring your income?
ancientgran · 16/04/2021 18:03

Not everyone is desperate to appeal to the majority. And not should they be. The minority want places to stay too Unusual business strategy unless you have an amazing offer. For a small self catering unit in a stone outbuilding I think you probably need to broaden your appeal. If you want to do this as a hobby fair enough, if it is supposed to be a business you need to consider your potential customers.

EveningOverRooftops · 16/04/2021 18:04

Tv and basic DVD player would be perfect for me tbh. Whenever I’ve had an opportunity to go away. One night curling up with a DVD is a luxury.

Just make it clear in your ADvert what utilities are there. If you go with NO TV say so and that internet is a bit crap so people can load up tablets or whatever with downloaded shows/books/podcasts whatever.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/04/2021 18:05

It wouldn't bother me at all, my family don't watch tv on holiday really and could easily manage with a tablet, but I think we are the exception.

EveningOverRooftops · 16/04/2021 18:05

Sorry hit post too soon.

I wouldn’t be put off by NO TV. I’d just want to know before arrival so I could plan what to bring laptop vs tablet or extra books and favourite tea.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/04/2021 18:05

Yeah. Good luck.
You will need it

B&B run by someone "who is not doing a business, and has no interest in hospitality".

That sounds amazing Grin

I don't think OP understands what a business is, tbf Grin
