Yes I know it’s a trivial question but the lawsuit’s ridiculous and I’m bored. Other supermarkets have their own version of Colin, so why are M&S targeting Aldi? Also loving Aldi’s hilarious Twitter feed. So AIBU M&S are right or YANBU Aldi all the way.

M&S being ridix unless they’re going to Sue all other supermarkets w fake ‘Colins’. If you go to Aldi you know you’re getting Cuthbert and not Colin, surely.
There must be some legality us laymen haven’t thought of regarding this.

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2021 13:33

It's on radio two now about this. It all feels like sour grapes to me.
M and S are probably just a bit pissed off that people would rather pay for a slightly cheaper cake because if people are buying this then they will be on Aldi buying all the other bits for the party too. Normally these stores have their own ' version' of well known things , so I'm surprised that Aldi didn't do a butterfly cake or a unicorn one or something ( Aldi the Aardvark cake !)
I can actually see both sides but the stores are always in competition with each other and it's only a cake at the end of the day.

Judge Rinder has passed his verdict Grin

Lolwhat · 16/04/2021 13:35

Team cuthbert🤣

FredaFox · 16/04/2021 13:35

Colin is far superior to me. God I miss working in the office, every birthday we get a Colin (or Connie) 🐛

Propagandalf · 16/04/2021 13:37

I don't know why M&S are only suing Aldi, when Tesco and Sainsbury's have their own versions too.

Propagandalf · 16/04/2021 13:39

Waitrose's - Cecil
Sainsbury's - Wiggles
Tesco's - Curly
Asda - Clyde

So why not sue them as well?

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2021 13:39

Dry swiss roll with a face? Neither.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 16/04/2021 13:41

Im amazed that aldi have managed to get away their branding of these things being so similar to others for so long. It's known that ppl shop according to scanning for 'their brand' colours. Aldi have tapped into this. I'm aj aldi fan so I'm on team cuthbert 😁

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2021 13:41

@Propagandalf

Discuusion about that Here
PegPeople · 16/04/2021 13:42

I'm team cuthbert simply Ibdon't think I'll ever actually understand to begin with how M&S were able to copywrit what is essentially a swiss roll with a face on it that had been made by bakers up and down the country for decades.

BramStoker · 16/04/2021 13:42

M&S lawyers are making idiots of themselves imho

I'd happily enjoy a slice of Colin or Cuthbert

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 16/04/2021 13:43

I'm waiting for the Walnut Whips people to come after M&S

YesThisIsMe · 16/04/2021 13:44

Team Lawyer/Journalist/Marketing exec.

It’s keeping the wheels of the economy turning and keeping us all harmlessly entertained.

Not a fan of Aldi, which is a huge multinational several times the size of M&S, presenting themselves as the oppressed underdogs so maybe that makes me Team Colin by default.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/04/2021 13:44

I'll eat either, but we shop at aldi so makes sense to choose cuthbert if I'm in the market for a Caterpillar cake. Its perfectly delicious.

jay55 · 16/04/2021 13:46

I think Colin's chocolate has gone severely downhill.
But I do like the M&S cappuccino Swiss roll as an alternative.

Icantchangemyusername · 16/04/2021 13:46

It's rather pathetic. Surely anyone that shops in Aldi knows it's not a branded M&S cake. They do loads of other products which are similar to branded items. M&S needs to get a grip.

PerhapsInchyraBlue · 16/04/2021 13:48

I've never actually had a Cuthbert but am Cuthbert all the way now. Get a ducking grip M&S Grin

2021namechanges · 16/04/2021 13:49

I’d honestly think it was a publicity stunt if it wasn’t so heavily weighted in Aldi’s favour.

PersonaNonGarter · 16/04/2021 13:51

I think M&S PR team are playing a blinder.

buddhasbelly · 16/04/2021 13:51

Did anyone else see the aldi tweet? They're getting their marketing shares worth out of this!

AIBU to ask whether you’re Team Colin or Team Cuthbert?
WonkyCactus · 16/04/2021 13:53

Team Colin, the original and best!

PegPeople · 16/04/2021 13:54

@PersonaNonGarter

I think M&S PR team are playing a blinder.
Genuine question but why? So far most of the comments I've seen are saying M&S are being petty, rediculous, daft, stuck up etc.

I really don't think it's doing their image much good. Aldi on the other hand seem to be making the most of the whole situation and their social media is really playing up to the dispute.

Skyliner001 · 16/04/2021 13:54

Team Colin, Aldi is awful for ripping off businesses by stocking their products until customers get used to seeing the packaging, and then copying the packaging to within an inch of its life. It's really dishonourable, and affect smaller suppliers

Skyliner001 · 16/04/2021 13:55

Obviously M&S is a big supplier, but it might help the little people
