Yes I know it’s a trivial question but the lawsuit’s ridiculous and I’m bored. Other supermarkets have their own version of Colin, so why are M&S targeting Aldi? Also loving Aldi’s hilarious Twitter feed. So AIBU M&S are right or YANBU Aldi all the way.

@CovidCorvid

I do hope the daily Mail have done some serious journalism by tomorrow and had a blind taste test panel.
I thought that Cuthbert wasn't available atm?
CovidCorvid · 16/04/2021 20:33

@diddl. Not sure, but the telegraph have done it!

Sadly behind a paywall.

CovidCorvid · 16/04/2021 20:35

Evening standard test but you’re right, no Cuthbert available.

The quality and taste of M&S will be far superior to the likes of Aldi

I wouldn't say that was guaranteed.

Tirathisyou · 16/04/2021 20:41

Colin, just because no matter how big the business, blatantly ripping someone else off is shit. Sure, do a caterpillar cake, but don't just copy the exact face. Not sure how they get away with the cosmetics dupes.

abc4321 · 16/04/2021 20:44

I must be the aforementioned idiot as I've eaten both and noticed little discernible difference between them.

I'm only an occasional Aldi shopper but have to say that the quality of the meat and bakery produce pleasantly surprised me. As for the Aldi washing powder, my son did an extensive test of branded/unbranded powders for a science project using a variety of stains and Almat came second (to Ariel).

I think M&S have a battle to prove shoppers were sufficiently confused to enter Aldi and buy a Cuthbert thinking it was Colin. But I'm sure the legal team have their case ready.

diddl · 16/04/2021 20:46

Can't access the Telegraph sadly.

Can see the pic but hat's about all!

Out of interest, on the pic, which cake is which?

M&S in the middle, not sure which one Cuthbert is.

you cant buy this sort of publicity. Suspect both places will have a huge sales boost. Team Cuthbert - just because I love that name!

I really don't think this is doing anything positive for m&s. Aldi on the other hand seem to have been given a PR opportunity on a silver platter and they are certainly making the most of it.
Angelica789 · 16/04/2021 21:09

It is irrelevant that the Aldi one is more similar. They are all similar. Only a Colin obsessive could be certain they weren’t being served M&S cake at a children’s party when presented with any of them. And said Colin obsessive is never going to be fooled by the Aldi version no matter how similar they make it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/04/2021 21:12

Aldi's bantz on social media is life.

Exactly. Several posters myself included have made similar points. Once removed from the box the the vast majority would not be able to pick Colin out of a line up. To 99% of people they don't know what his face looks like or how he is decorated, be it with sprinkles or smarties they only know Colin is a chocolate caterpillar cake.

Absolutely 😂

Their team is just amazing. I want to be them

Wellpark · 16/04/2021 21:38

Hah trying to be facetious and got caught out by predictive text 😂😂 Aldi spelling not Also

Rockbird · 16/04/2021 21:42

Team Colin. Aldi are utter pisstakers, it's about time someone called them out.

LetsGoChamp · 16/04/2021 21:55

@Twinkie01

If Cuthbert is as awful as Norpak I'm Colin all the way.
Agreed.
Shopaholic100 · 16/04/2021 21:55

I didn’t know about the Cuthbert cake, thanks M & S for bringing it to my attention.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/04/2021 21:56

For those who missed it. Judge Rinder is on it as well😂

SEE123 · 16/04/2021 22:53

@PegPeople sorry I missed your reply. No, perhaps not a chocolate Swiss, but they did create Colin. At least the other supermarkets attempted to "differentiate" with sprinkles or markings etc. Aldi chose to make it a near perfect replica - will be interesting to see how that argument plays out.

I plan on testing out the unboxed blind taste test 😬 how many caterpillars is unreasonable?
Pretty sure I could pick out Colin. I'm in my 30s and he's still my favourite birthday cake. 😂

mumwon · 16/04/2021 22:56

Clever marketing ploy
(Visions of mn sampling each supermarket chocolate caterpillar to see which is best - "I don't care if you are sick of caterpillars dc, you still have 2 more to try" - & than a thread "what shall I do my dc doesn't like caterpillars AIBU"?)

Horehound · 16/04/2021 22:57

I can see both sides but I think M and S just need to chill

mumwon · 16/04/2021 22:58
