To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

I love red wine, but it can give me a very bad head. I find I have to stop after the first bottle, or I get a full-blown migraine

Generally I find that a whole bottle would give me a headache too!

RampantIvy · 15/04/2021 14:40

This thread is bonkers Grin
If the OP genuinely hasn't heard of chardonnay then she isn't really a white wine drinker.

DH is a wine enthusiast, and is pretty knowledgable about wine. He (and I) like white and red wine equally. We tend to drink more red in the colder months, and more white in the warmer months. He hasn't found many rose wines that he has tried and liked so far.

Interms of "grape" wine, it is usually assumed that wine is made from grapes unless otherwise specified. DH had an auntie who made the most delicious blackcurrant wine.

lolacola77 · 15/04/2021 14:42

Crazy. I tend to drink white in warm weather and red in winter

timeforanewnameagain · 15/04/2021 14:42

Well i only like three types of wine (alcohol actually I don't like beers, spirits etc). I'll have a glass of champagne but I wouldn't have more it's too fizzy. All white (grape) wine. NZ Sauv, and French Chablis and Sancerre. All of which are fairly similar-ish to a person not in the know about wine!

I have drunk £6 bottles from Aldi and £70 bottles at a nice restaurant. I liked them both.

I even drink white (grape) wine with red meat, because I don't like red wine at all. Go on, feel free to judge me I don't mind Grin

Worldgonecrazy · 15/04/2021 14:43

Nettle wine is white and delicious Wine

Marmite27 · 15/04/2021 14:48

@Mrsjayy

Try being a rosè drinker

In winter Grin

I’ve adopted the martini motto for my rosé...

Anytime, any place, anywhere Grin unless I fancy a cinzano (80’s child Blush)

LadyJaye · 15/04/2021 14:52
@LadyJaye, look out for Polgoon as well if you like Cornish sparklers. The vineyard is not far from where my mum lives. Just outside Penzance Smile
Have just bought a bottle online based on your recommendation! Grin

RealisticSketch · 15/04/2021 14:53

Worldgonecrazy Now I really really want to try nettle wine! I like nettle seeds, they are lovely and crunchy and I treat them like poppy seeds and put them on a salad.

Rukaya · 15/04/2021 14:53

I currently have half a case of Picpoul from Lidl's

It's good but the Aldi picpoul is better Wink

RedcurrantPuff · 15/04/2021 14:54

What about white wine that is made from red wine grapes?

TonTonMacoute · 15/04/2021 14:57

The only thing that really matters about the wine you are drinking is whether you are enjoying it.

I'm going to be a wine snob and say that people who look down on white wine drinkers don't actually know very much about wine.

rabbitheadlights · 15/04/2021 14:58

Eh? Hmm

Ponoka7 · 15/04/2021 15:00

I like red and white, for some reason I went off rose after the menopause. If I'm in the mood for sweet white wine and there's nothing available were I am, because I'm visiting, I buy Lambrini, now that does get judgement.

I can't stand alcohol or food snobbery.

TonTonMacoute · 15/04/2021 15:00

@RedcurrantPuff

What about white wine that is made from red wine grapes?

It is the grape skins that make the difference. For white wine the grapes are pressed then the juice is strained off and the juice is fermented and becomes wine.

For red wine the skins and juice are fermented together. Rosé wine has the skins kept for a while and then they are strained out.

FishyFriday · 15/04/2021 15:02

Years ago, when I as a student, some friends and I used to go for lunch in a pub next to the university on a Friday reasonably often. There was always a group of women on there who would be drinking ... red wine and irn bru. Mixed together. In the same glass.

I don't think you need to be a wine snob to look at that and think: boak

Blueeyedgirl21 · 15/04/2021 15:06

@FishyFriday I have a Spanish friend who drinks red wine and Coca Cola

BarbaraofSeville · 15/04/2021 15:09

Red wine and coca cola in Spain is a thing, and it has a name.

Kalimotxo. There's also Tinto Verano, which is red wine and cheap lemonade, which is less revolting and of course sangria, which effectively Tinto verano, plus brandy, orange juice and cutted up fruit..

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 15/04/2021 15:10
@FishyFriday I have a Spanish friend who drinks red wine and Coca Cola
Oh yes, that's very much a thing. It's called a kalimotxo.

EscapeDragon · 15/04/2021 15:17

@Bellyundertit

There are other types of wines. Plum elderberry. White flesh peace wine. I just find it odd. Who says things like that.who even cares. It's just bloody white grape wine. 🤔
Almost all wine is made from grapes. When people say 'wine' that's what they mean.

You don't need to say 'grape wine' any more than you would need to say 'flour bread'.

andyoldlabour · 15/04/2021 15:21

LakieLady

White Rioja is usually more complex than other wines, but difficult to find. The named Cotes du Rhone villages are a good bet now - Cairanne, Rasteau, Plan de Dieu, Visan, Vinsobres etc. They are a more affordable version of Chateuneuf Du Pape and Gigondas.

FishyFriday · 15/04/2021 15:28
@FishyFriday I have a Spanish friend who drinks red wine and Coca Cola
Doesn't make wine and irn bru ok. 🤢

andyoldlabour · 15/04/2021 15:33

I think the wines which I really dislike (white and red) are New World ones which are too sweet, have a "confected" taste.
I also think English wine in general is overpriced. Three years ago we stayed a couple of nights in the Champagne region in a Grand Cru village - Bouzy - and we bought six bottles of Grand Cru Champagne direct from the grower at 21 Euros a bottle.

nanbread · 15/04/2021 15:39

@Planttrees

I think what most people are missing here is the fact that there are plenty of white wines made with red grapes. The most common one is Champagne!
This is what I was wondering - is it wine made with white grapes that's the issue, or white wine made from grapes (also known as, um, white wine)?
OscarWildesCat · 15/04/2021 15:54

I’ve never encountered this at all OP. Anyway, everyone knows it’s white for day drinking and red for night drinking, right?

Reinventinganna · 15/04/2021 16:03

I have a wine headache today. Bastard (grape) wine.
