To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

I avoid all the gin nonsense and trends

So do I. IMO flavoured gin is for people who don't like gin.And my favourite gin is Gordon's because it tastes of gin. It has a predominant flavour of juniper, and that is why I like it. I don't want my gin to taste of rhubarb, cardamon, lemon meringue pie or other flavour, just juniper please. And no to the myriad of tonic water flavours, just plain tonic water please.

And what exactly is the point in putting peppercorns in a gin and tonic? Just a slice of lemon or lime please.

CounsellorTroi · 16/04/2021 10:19

My favourite non sparkling whites are Chablis, Pouilly-Fume and good white Rioja.

RampantIvy · 16/04/2021 10:32

Because I am bored I have more Chardonnay wines for the Chardonnay hater Grin

Chablis
Montrachet
Meursault
Pouilly-Fuissé

I suggest that you try an unoaked Chardonnay. I can promise you it will taste nothing like an oaked Australian chardonnay. Although I am a bit of a pleb when it comes to Chardonnay and really enjoy a nice oaked Chardonnay.

Zhampagne · 16/04/2021 10:34

@SelfBuild

The only white wine I judge is Chardonnay, it's the Rosé of white wines Grin

All others fine, Sauvignon blanc the best.

Don't like red wine, not for lack of trying. Mind you I don't like room temperature drinks, I drink my tea hot and other drinks with ice or straight out the fridge so I think that's why.

(Grape)

How do you feel about Chablis?

How about blanc de blancs Champagne?

There's a big difference between all the flavoured gins though! The ones I like (which I referenced) are more nuanced. Unlike Gordons pink gin, which is like drinking artificially flavoured squash with a hint of alcohol.

My favourite 'everyday' gin is straightforward Gordon's, sometimes Tanqueray, with Schweppes Slimline and a slice of lime. With two large ice cubes.

I have never heard this OP Confused

There are many incredibly good white wines that are comparable with the best red wines in terms of quality - Chateau Haut Brion, Prieur Montrachet, etc. The most expensive wine in the world is Chateau d'Yquem, a white dessert wine.

We stayed in a village near Chassagne Montrachet many years ago. One evening we went to a restaurant in Meursault, where I had probably the best fish dish ever (I don't eat much fish to be fair). It was fillets of Zander in a white wine sauce - Meursault of course, with a half botle of Meursault 1er cru between us.

The rosé snobbery makes me chuckle. There’s a world of difference between a beautiful pale, dry rosé and a white Zinfandel!

Very true, there are some wonderful dry french rose wines. Perfect for an alfresco meal. I think Zinfandel is more of a gateway wine when you're young and wine doesn't actually taste nice to you!

The snobbery is often ignorance.

So true.

I bought this rose Prosecco today from Aldi.

It was recommended by Decanter as one of the best wines to buy, coming in at only three points less (out of 100) than a couple of Champagnes

Yes! I drank white Zinfandel (good old Blossom Hill!) when I was probably aged 18-20. When I was drinking to get drunk too (and wow did it do the job) before I liked 'proper' wine.

I also used to drink Piat D'or at that age! I don't even know what sort of wine that is apart from headache inducing Grin

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 16/04/2021 18:08

I love rose! My favourite is Whispering Angel, delicious v cold on a summer's afternoon. I do find that the 'buzz' from rose is really rather nice, but the hangovers... OMG.. the worst hangovers EVER from rose. Red wine doesn't really give me hangovers. I shouln't really drink white wine as it turns me loopy

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/04/2021 18:26
Is anyone else now thinking of Moira Rose promoting Herb Ertlinger’s fruit wine? The dazzling peach crabapple in the Riesling Rioja...
OMG I was scrolling down to post the same!!!!!

Still funny!!!

Cheeserton · 16/04/2021 18:29

No. 'People' don't have a problem with white wine drinking. How totally odd.

Silly friends, I guess.

Wilkolampshade · 16/04/2021 19:08

Chateau Chunder anyone?

tinytemper66 · 16/04/2021 19:17

A grillo wine is wonderful (white Sicilian)

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/04/2021 19:36

@KirstenBlest

The snobbery is often ignorance.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

People are very determined to show off their wine knowledge I find.
Pretty much every wine thread will have someone correcting the “ I hate Chardonnay drinker” with “all Chablis is Chardonnay “. However this doesn’t mean that all Chablis are equal and some of them just do taste of Chardonnay steel vats or no steel vats.

I always notice people are less inclined to bang on about the delicious Alsace wine they had. That was always the sign when I worked in the trade that someone actually knew something about wine.

RampantIvy · 16/04/2021 20:06

We enjoyed a delicious bottle of Assyrtijo white wine from North West Greece tonight. It is vegan, and the label on the bottle states "Responsible certified sustainable viticulture with zero use of herbicides". I bought it in Aldi.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 16/04/2021 20:10

In my experience most people like white wine and less drink red. I like both but certainly never seen any snobbery about it.

Huh? Never come across this and DH is very wine savvy. Just has to be good white (or red) wine.
WrongWayApricot · 16/04/2021 21:12

MD 20/20 comes in loads of colours, great way to avoid snobbery.

DH is the same.

I like Viognier, White Rioja, Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Riesling Gewurztraminer. I also like oaked Chardonnay. I love dessert wine, especially Tokaj. I also have a bottle of Canadian Ice Wine to try.
