To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

I may have missed this but my fermented grape drink of choice is champagne. There is also the mildly interesting fact that some white wine is made from red grapes and some from white. In France the latter is sometimes called Blanc de blancs. Aka Blankety blank if you're really classy like me

FangsForTheMemory · 15/04/2021 20:29

@BIWI have you tried Opihr? I adore it. Really spicy.

forinborin · 15/04/2021 20:30

My choice of drink is an islay malt with cherry coke and god I was looked down in Scotland when ordering it. Thought I'd be kicked out of the bar.
It's amazing through.

BIWI · 15/04/2021 20:34

I have @FangsForTheMemory - it was OK but not a favourite for me.

Two particular likes (apart from the Rangpur) are City of London rhubarb and rose

and Four Pillars rare dry gin

forinborin · 15/04/2021 20:35

On the white wine topic, I must admit that all white wines that I ever liked were in the "special occasion only" price category. While I can happily drink red wine for £5/bottle, house red wine on offer or even some weird red homebrew from 50% grapes and 50% donkey piss when visiting back home.
So for me the sophistication is probably reversed.

Daphnise · 15/04/2021 20:39

Don't know what white grape wine is.

If it is white wine, then yes most people who drink wine regularly seem to prefer red wine, but why is this a problem?

AnnieRich · 15/04/2021 21:25

I love Cairn O’ Mohr wines. A lovely, friendly place to visit.

RancidOldHag · 15/04/2021 21:34

Cheers

Lovely to see there's another fan!

Karwomannghia · 15/04/2021 21:39

I’m a big cliched Prosecco drinker and I know people are snobby about that but I don’t care! I used to drink red but it’s too heavy for me now.

EscapeDragon · 15/04/2021 21:41

They make nice red champagne in Germany. I had some once. Floored me Grin

Crimeismymiddlename · 15/04/2021 21:44

This is a bizarre post. I had a vague idea that people think red wine is sophisticated. I hate the stained teeth and lips-it means people can tell I have had a drink! I also find it too heavy. But I am a a massive chav so only like fizzy pink or white, or the new fizzy water vodka drinks.

OwlBeThere · 15/04/2021 22:10

@andyoldlabour
Who peels all the grapes to make white wine? What a fucking tedious job that must be

I just hope that wasn't a serious question?

not really, but also sort of...I mean the skins are removed somehow right?? Grin

tilder · 15/04/2021 22:13

Am feeling really ignorant now! Most of my favourite whites are all chardonnay, I had no ideaBlush.

My memories of chardonnay are all post graduation Jacob's Creek. Moving on from £3 a bottle to £5 (as it was then). Thought I had drunk too much chardonnay to like it any more. Will give it another go.

Huge snobbery about wine. Plus sexism about the colour. Red is for serious wine drinkers (men). White is for the ladies. Apparently.

DontBeRidiculous · 15/04/2021 22:16

No matter what subject, you can count on it that somewhere, there's someone who has managed to be snobby about it. It's annoying, but there's nothing you can do about it beyond ignoring them and continuing to enjoy what you enjoy. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

Jesus, you're right. It's a flippin' robot!
midnightstar66 · 16/04/2021 08:28

Wine presumably is 'grape' unless you specifically state otherwise. Never heard the term white grape wine, anyway, moving on to your question I have never encountered this. People can be snobby about types of white wine - if someone offered me a glass of lambrini for example - but generally it's accepted that people like different things and that different wines go well with different foods on on different occasions. Eg white over a light meal on a sunny day outdoors, red for a cozy evening in front of the fire (not for me I dislike red but am very fussy about white wines and even more so with rose)

SelfBuild · 16/04/2021 08:37

The only white wine I judge is Chardonnay, it's the Rosé of white wines Grin

All others fine, Sauvignon blanc the best.

Don't like red wine, not for lack of trying. Mind you I don't like room temperature drinks, I drink my tea hot and other drinks with ice or straight out the fridge so I think that's why.

(Grape)

SelfBuild · 16/04/2021 08:41

I say judge, I wouldn't actually give two hoots if anyone ordered it. I just really don't like it. I also called it the rosé of white wines, but I actually like rosé. So the judgement is also on myself. I got DH to buy me a bottle of white Zinfandel rosé a couple of months ago and he said he was embarrassed in the shop HmmGrin

That shows your ignorance. Not all wines made with the chardonnay grape are Australian, overblown and over-oaked.

Chardonnay grapes are the main grape in Champagne. White burgundy is made using Chardonnay grapes. Many other top class white wines use chardonnay grapes.

Bourbonic · 16/04/2021 09:00

I'm not a huge wine drinker but like some whites, some reds and some roses.

100% there is a weird culture of wine snob. And there is nothing more tedious than a wine bore! But the same can be said of most drinks really. I've drank gin and lemonade for 20 years, hate those stupid copa glasses and don't like flavours or garnishes beyond a slice of lemon and lime. The amount of times I've been grilled on my choices and told I just haven't found the right tonic (hate it) or how an artisan gin is so much better is just ridiculous.

Appletreehat · 16/04/2021 09:20

I've never come across wine snobbery...I don't drink it as I can't stand the taste, so if there was such a thing as wine snobs, I would be the worst of the worst.

I tell a lie - if I do drink alcohol on a rare occasion, I do like that fizzy pink prosecco stuff.

Rollmopsrule · 16/04/2021 09:27

I agree with someone else that said the only nice white wines I've drank are far more expensive than what I'd spend on a reasonable bottle of red so I always thought the opposite. I love red but unfortunately it doesn't love me. I feel so sick the next day even after a couple of glasses so I've switched to white. Just going through the process of trying lots to see what I like :)

Rollmopsrule · 16/04/2021 09:30

Bourbonic agree totally. I have drank gin and tonic for years before it came back 'it's. It was seen as an old ladies drink. I avoid all the gin nonsense and trends. Just drink what you like!

tweettweettweettweet · 16/04/2021 09:37

I think if people are snobby about white white, they probably don't know much about wine at all. There are some delicious very highly regarded both white and rose wines. Their snobbiness just makes them look stupid.
