To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

White wine is looked down on by my friends too. A wine-snob friend complimented my choice of chablis. It was chardonnay.

wigjuice · 15/04/2021 12:31

My mum makes the most potent wines. Her white parsley wine could put the most ardent lush on their back after 2 glasses. No chance of looking down on that, rather looking up, at the sky.

andyoldlabour · 15/04/2021 12:31

I used to run a wine club decades ago and we would theme every meeting, red, white, sparkling, rose, Bordeaux blends etc.
I found that most guys preferred reds.
It is just down to personal taste. I love Rhone Valley reds, but would have a nice Provence rose with a Summer BBQ.

Crankley · 15/04/2021 12:32

I don't think people are that snobby about it - maybe it's your friends?

Most people who drink red wine also drink white, it's not an either/or situation. My preference is for red but I still enjoy a good white, especially if I'm eating fish or shellfish or enjoy a spritzer on a hot summer's day..

Admittedly, I would rather go without than drink cheap sweet white wine or Prosecco,

KVIIIlyne · 15/04/2021 12:33

@LittleTiger007

Somebody just randomly said they don't like white grape wine. So pedantic. Honestly. But still we rise.

Ahhh ok. Now I see. One person made a random comment and you’ve decided to take offence and turn to mumsnet?

You need some proper worries in life.

you don't know the context.

If that was in reply to the OP offering wine during a meal she prepared for someone, it's not the same as a random comment.

It's also possible to have an opinion without being "offended". I wish people could find another word than offended every single time they disagree with something.

Plumtree391 · 15/04/2021 12:33

I didn't know there was any snobbery regarding red or white, only type and vintage.

White for white meat and fish, red for red.

However what you fancy is how most people drink it.

I don't particularly like wine and only buy cheap for cooking.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/04/2021 12:34

@Mewmin

I've never encountered this. Maybe it's just your friends?
No, it's a thing. The word plonk comes from 'blanc'. I do actually think that red wine drinkers are more likely to have had more money to spend on wine while forming their preference. A good red is better for me than a good white, but I drink white because I can't afford to spend enough on red to avoid a hangover inducing cheap one.

"A wine-snob friend complimented my choice of chablis. It was chardonnay."

At one of our meetings someone said "I don't like Chardonnay but I love Chablis". I had to point out very tactfully, that Chablis is only made from the Chardonnay grape.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/04/2021 12:35

"I didn't know there was any snobbery regarding red or white, only type and vintage.

White for white meat and fish, red for red."

Well, yes, so if you drink white with everything, you can be looked down on by some people.

LittleTiger007 · 15/04/2021 12:36

If they simply mildly disagreed @KVIIIlyne then they’d brush it off rather than start a thread on it, so it’s a fair assumption.

I didn't know that! (I paid 10€ for a small glass of Chablis in a cafe in Paris!).

@hoorayforharoldlloyd

I remember online dating how many men seemed to think drinking red wine and black coffee was the same as a personality and I was mid 30s. It was all a bit Adrian mole trying to prove sophistication.

Drink what you like - I like white, rose and fizzy and if that gives someone the Heebies, ah well.

Well said. Grin

I used to love red wine and pregnancy completely kiboshed that, never re-acquired the taste and did occasionally bump into some snobbishness over it. Now peri-menopause has scuppered my white wine drinking! 😱 It's cider now 😆

Sunshineandflipflops · 15/04/2021 12:39

Unsure why the "grape" is in there also but I don't think I've encountered wine snobbery and I have dunk a lot of it in my 42 years!

I like a cold, dry white on a warm day. Even better, I love a cold blush (not the fruity rose sort though...way too sweet but that's just my preference) and I love a full bodied Malbec or a Rioja. I have no interest of other's opinions on my wine preferences!

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:39

I'm really sorry. I don't speak French but I love French people. but what is chardonnay?

OP posts:
LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 15/04/2021 12:39

Champagne tends to be made from Chardonnay grapes an' all.

RancidOldHag · 15/04/2021 12:39

Try this winery - the oaky white isn't a poncy wine descriptor it's the ingredient list

www.cairnomohr.com/browse

The strawberry fizz is good summer outdoor drinking wine

RightlyPointingOut · 15/04/2021 12:40

Could be worse - according to ‘experts’ I have terrible taste in wine - I drink red (sweet) Lambrusco (£2/£3 a bottle - when I can get it) and Asti Spumante.
However, I don’t give a fuck what anyone else, expert or otherwise think.
Life’s too short.

Chablis is made from Chardonnay to be be fair, just not in the Chablis regions.
Gwenhwyfar · 15/04/2021 12:41

@variegated

Why are making sure people know wine is made from grapes?
It can be made from other things though can't it?
MagicSummer · 15/04/2021 12:42

What a strange post! I don't drink red wine because it gives me a headache and I don't like the taste. I drink a variety of white wines which I very much enjoy. Couldn't care less what other people think.

How can you claim to drink white wine but not know what Chardonnay is? What sort of white wine do you drink?
Gwenhwyfar · 15/04/2021 12:44

@BobbuhT

I think Rose is looked down on the most because white is a classic seafood companion...i reckon true wine connissaurs care more about the label and food pairing than colour.

Op i also find snobbiness witg choice of beer, cider, type of vodka, even in chocolate.. white and milk being seen as kiddie chocolate and dark much more health savvy and sophisticated palate. 😂

Yes, I also think Rose is looked down on the most. I think it's probably seen as too sweet.
grapewine · 15/04/2021 12:45

But people have a massive problem with people drinking white grape wine

Do they? No one I know. If your friends have a problem with it, you're around the wrong people.

DynamoKev · 15/04/2021 12:45

@Toilenstripes

Go to dinner with a wine snob and order the house white. 😆 Just to troll them.
Or the Merlot - or any single grape

When I worked in the wine trade, we used to call these 'ABCs' (Anything But Chardonnay).

I took a certain slightly peevish delight in hearing them rhapsodise over 'white Burgundies' at tasting events.

As I always say, drink whatever you like if it tastes nice to you, but a combination of snobbery and stupidity is never a good look.

(I should point out that I reserved this smuggery for the ponciest of the poncy. Those who said they didn't like Chardonnay, but genuinely didn't know, or were willing to try new things or learn more, I welcomed with open arms.

I saved my ire for those who spraffed about 'Left Bank this / Right Bank that', but were seemingly unaware of varietals. )
