To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

YABU. Why would you care what other people think? Red wine gives me a headache I never drink it

LondonJax · 15/04/2021 12:03

Well, I'm a rosè drinker given the choice. I'll drink white (most of them) and a few reds but I'm happier with a rosè. And I'll have it with fish, steak, curry or a sandwich.

I've only ever had one person be 'snobby' about it. At a BBQ a friend of my DSis asked what I was drinking for a top up. I said 'the white zinfandel' to which he replied 'why on earth are you drinking that sweet shit'. To which I just said 'for the same reason you're drinking that tannin tasting shit. Because I like it.' As my sister said 'well you did ask...'

BobbuhT · 15/04/2021 12:04

I think Rose is looked down on the most because white is a classic seafood companion...i reckon true wine connissaurs care more about the label and food pairing than colour.

Op i also find snobbiness witg choice of beer, cider, type of vodka, even in chocolate.. white and milk being seen as kiddie chocolate and dark much more health savvy and sophisticated palate. 😂

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 15/04/2021 12:04

I've never encountered this before! There are some great and some very expensive white wines as well as red etc. Snobby about a couple of quid vinegar maybe? If that what you meant?

Each to their own taste and what they can afford.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/04/2021 12:05

have you drunk some white grape wine before posting?

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:06

But people have a massive problem with people drinking white grape wine

No they don't

seadreams · 15/04/2021 12:07

I’ve also encountered this! It is extremely irritating. I’ve been told several times that I HAVE to like red or that oh no you have to try THIS particular red cause you’ll definitely like it....

I won’t!!!

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:08

Don't even post about coffee on here eek 😂 you will see real snobbiness then. Grapefruit wine sounds lush.

Grape wine as opposed to - parsnip wine?

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 15/04/2021 12:09

I don't think you're completely wrong - there's more pantomime around red wine: it's more likely even now to have a cork; you can decant it and let it breathe; bore everyone to death about its 'legs' and 'faux naïveté' and all that; if your giving someone a high-end bottle as a present, it's more likely to be red. It's still perceived to be more a man's choice than a woman's. Plus, in this country (I guess you're UK?) we don't really mix it with soda water or Schweppes lemonade. But I don't think there's a massive 'Upstairs, Downstairs' thing going on.

PuppyMonkey · 15/04/2021 12:10

White flesh peace wine? Confused

I have always dismissed the MN Wine emoji as the only option is red and I never drink it. Come on MNHQ, let’s have a white wine version.

Advice after reading: stop drinking altogether

BobbuhT · 15/04/2021 12:11

Me neither . I don't like the taste. But people have a massive problem with people drinking white grape wine is so..bizarre.
There is not a single person in the world who has a ‘massive problem’ with people drinking ‘white grape wine’.

There also not a single person in the world, other than your good self, who insists on referring to ‘white wine’ as ‘white grape wine’.

ChaToilLeam · 15/04/2021 12:12

I have indeed encountered such snobbiness. I also live in Germany, and enjoy German wine, and have also encountered snobbiness about that. Of course those in the know also know that some excellent wines are made in Germany, you just don’t often find them outside of specialty shops in the UK.

I love white wine and a good rosé is perfect for summer drinking. But the best wine of all is one you enjoy, simple as that.

UCOinanOCG · 15/04/2021 12:12

What a weird post. Red wine is made from grapes too. I like all kinds of wine and don't look down on anybody no matter what they do or don't drink.

Trolling. Yes, probably.
Susie477 · 15/04/2021 12:13

It’s not snobbishness, it’s ignorance. Good quality white wine with a nice balance of fruit, acidity and possibly oak is delicious. Cheap, thin tannic red is disgusting.

The problem is that many people know nothing about wine so they drink what they see others drinking because they think it’s what they are supposed to like. Hence the baffling popularity of tasteless Pinot Grigio a few years ago.

Mrsjayy · 15/04/2021 12:13

wine brings out the precious side of some people who like to pretend they know about wines when in reality couldn't do a blind fold test between plonk and a £60 bottle, because in reality they know sod all.
Drink what you like and everyone who looks down their noses at your choice can jog along.
