To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

Why do posters keep saying people have no problem with this. I and several others have encountered this attitude towards white wine. There is snobbiness on tea and toilet roll type so why is it so hard to envisage people being snobby about a drink which can hugely vary in prices like wine.

Rukaya · 15/04/2021 12:15

No it isn't. Stop being so paranoid.

Kokosrieksts · 15/04/2021 12:16

I thought white wine was made from red grapes without the skins. Have I made this up?
It doesn’t make anybody more classy whether they prefer red to white. Very odd indeed.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/04/2021 12:16

I think all wine is disgusting.
My drink of choice is cheap lager and occasionally tequila and I have no shame about itGrin

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:17

@BobbuhT

Gin there is gin though, mumsnets national drink of choice.
Gin has a higher alcohol concentration and mental health issues has increased during lockdowns. I've seen an increase in alcohol intake. I'm quite concerned. I prefer water. Don't particularly like gin. But I can understand why people do. Some don't enjoy their lives and Gin helps them deal with the harsh reality of life. An escapism in a sense. Can't say I like Gin, but I'm not passionately against it. It's this snobbery surrounding what wine someone has.

Why are making sure people know wine is made from grapes?

Griefmonster · 15/04/2021 12:19

"many men seemed to think drinking red wine and black coffee was the same as a personality" I love this from a PP. Very true.

LadyJaye · 15/04/2021 12:19

I used to work in the wine trade and hold the WSET Advanced Diploma.

I very much enjoy when wine snobs assume I am 'of their tribe' and attempt to engage me in high-falutin' conversations about what's most important.

Don't get me wrong, I like wine very much, and I appreciate having perhaps a little extra knowledge about the factors that can influence that - in the same way that knowing a little art history or theory can help you enjoy art a little more - but in my opinion, the most important thing about a wine is that it tastes nice to YOU, the person who will be drinking it.

One of the reasons why the wine trade has suffered over the years is because of stupid, poncey snobbery about what is nothing more than a glass of fermented grape juice.

(Oh, and for the record, I also enjoy a nice rose (apologies for lack of acute, keyboard not playing ball), although I admit that my one poncey point is that it has to be a dry Provence.)

Anyone else need a glass of plonk now? Confused

SamW98 · 15/04/2021 12:21

I drink Prosecco, I buy it in bulk from Amazon whenever there's a special offer on.
I've also got a George At Asda Tiki Bar set up in my garden blinged up with as much tacky crap as I could find

If people want to look down their nose at me, fill ya boots - I'll raise a toast and enjoy

MrsClatterbuck · 15/04/2021 12:21

I prefer red wine to white. Most white wines are too dry for my taste but if a little sweeter then I would drink them. But that's my taste and have never thought it was superior to drink red over white. Tbh most of my friends are white wine drinkers and I do also have a white wine spritzer sometimes. I do like the occasional rose but the sweeter ones. For me personally it's better healthwise I have red.

KVIIIlyne · 15/04/2021 12:21

Huh?!

You do realise that many people drink different things depending on the occasion, and the food that goes with it? Confused

Pretty sure drinking red wine is looked down on when served with certain dish or part of your meal Grin

KVIIIlyne · 15/04/2021 12:22

I do find that some white wines give me headaches, never figured out why.

HOkieCOkie · 15/04/2021 12:23

I would suggest it’s the brand ppl are snobby about not the grape. For example Wine buffs I know avoid anything like barefoot or jacobs creek because they say it’s cheap and nasty.

The more expensive the nicer the wine. I hate wine tho so it’s not really a big deal for me.

Zhampagne · 15/04/2021 12:24

Is anyone else now thinking of Moira Rose promoting Herb Ertlinger’s fruit wine? The dazzling peach crabapple in the Riesling Rioja...

Kokosrieksts · 15/04/2021 12:24

In fact, could it be that people are surprised by you saying “white grape wine” instead of white wine and it has nothing to do with the colour. Grin

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:25

@KVIIIlyne

I do find that some white wines give me headaches, never figured out why.
It's because of the enzymes and the fermentation or sometimes the barrell used apparently. Could be a placebo too.

Somebody just randomly said they don't like white grape wine. So pedantic. Honestly. But still we rise.

Haha absolutely love Moira 😂

LittleTiger007 · 15/04/2021 12:28

Maybe it’s because you’re calling it white grape wine. White wine or red it’s all a matter of taste. White is chilled and better for summer and with certain food. Red is warmer, better for heavy winter meals. I’ve never come across anyone judging who chooses red or white and I drink wine all the time.

Bellyundertit · 15/04/2021 12:29

White wine goes with tilapia fish.mhhm.

Ahhh ok. Now I see. One person made a random comment and you’ve decided to take offence and turn to mumsnet?

You need some proper worries in life.

PricklesAndSpikes · 15/04/2021 12:30

Couldn't disagree with this more! I love wine, any colour, any country, dry / sweet / fizzy depending on my mood. It's about personal taste not cost. Some of the nicest wines I have tasted have been as cheap as chips and some really expensive ones have been distinctly unpalatable!

PussGirl · 15/04/2021 12:30

You can get white wine made from red grapes - they leave out the skins - would that be better than actual white grape wine?

Does it matter? Drink what you like.

I prefer white or rose for drinking whereas DP prefers red for drinking. We both like the "correct" wine with food, though.
