To think that liking white (grape) wine isn't something should be so snobby about.

I am not a frequent drinker of wine. But I find that people tend to love red wine. But drinking white (grape) wine is looked down upon. I don't care about your wine taste. It doesn't bother me. If you drink wine ...it doesn't matter. It's just bloody wine.urghh

@ZaraW

YABU. Why would you care what other people think? Red wine gives me a headache I never drink it
Me too, but I discovered that expensive red wine doesn't. Wink
Gobbeldegook · 15/04/2021 12:46

Start drinking cider. They'll think you're a right ruffian 🤣

mybonnieliesovertheocean2 · 15/04/2021 12:47

never heard anything like that at all. I have a few friends in the food industry and they like good wines both red and white. Never heard of any snobbery...although I know a few people who like to think they know a bit about wine but dont....

BarbaraofSeville · 15/04/2021 12:47

Yes, wine can be made from fruit other than grapes, but grapes are very much the norm and make up the vast majority of wine sold.

Hence no need to clarify, grape wine is just wine, and then people talk about peach, elderflower or blackberry wine for the alternative ones.

Just like when people talk about cheese. Most cheese is made from cows milk, so people don't generally talk about cows milk cheddar or edam, but would say goat cheese, because that's far less common.

UturnUna · 15/04/2021 12:47

I prefer white wine as you don't get the same thick head the next day if you've had a few glasses. Some red wine is almost as strong as port. I agree OP that it's seen as a bit less highbrow, probably due to the Chardonnay/Pinot footballers wives/real housewives association.

motheroftwoboys · 15/04/2021 12:48

Some of the best and most expensive wines in the world are white
burgundys. Puligny Montrachet for example. Anyone who is "snobby" about red wine over white really doesn't know what they are talking about so don't listen to them. Grin

WindyPudding · 15/04/2021 12:48

Another rose lover here so I'm the lowest of the low. I used to prefer red - then after my first pregnancy when I could have wine again, I just didn't like it and switched to white. My favourite is pinot grigio and then I discovered pinot grigio blush.

IME red wine is sen as either serious wine snob wine or manly wine. White wine is for silly people/women and rose wine for only the silliest women.

ILoveShula · 15/04/2021 12:48

@andyoldlabour, @idontlikealdi, indeed, that's why I had chosen a decent chardonnay.

Another snobbery I get is the price. I am quite happy drinking the aldi/lidl/tesco cheap white wine, but people think a £5 one will be better.
They're usually not, just more expensive.

I bloody love cider, especially Breton cider.

Excellent picnic drinking. Grin

As someone who has just finished a wine tasting qualification, this is not a thing in circles where people actually know about wine. White, red and even rosé and sparkling wines are appreciated for their own merits. There are good and bad versions of all of them, and any snobbishness that exists is generally based on their origin (country, region and vineyard) not colour. So your friends don’t know what they’re talking about.

wonkylegs · 15/04/2021 12:54

Never come across this but also never heard it called white grape wine, usually it's just white wine

I generally only drink white as I'm allergic to red. I like it but can't have more than a mouthful.

I think there is an old fashioned notion that red wine is more sophisticated than white however anybody who has any interest in wine will tell you there are good reds and terrible reds and the same goes for whites and rose.

Drink what you enjoy and ignore friends that criticise.

Gobbeldegook · 15/04/2021 12:56

As do I. Especially on a hot day. From a freezer box 🤤

PrelovedWithValue · 15/04/2021 12:56

Why are making sure people know wine is made from grapes?

Maybe because not all wine is made from grapes?

Having said that, it does feel unnecessary. Most wines that aren't from grapes get a more detailed name eg 'dandilion wine'

Horehound · 15/04/2021 12:57

The more the op posts the more I think hmmmm!

I'm thinking of binning grape wine now, red and white and if they still sell it, going for a wine blend, THUNDERBIRD blue Grin

But what kind of cider? Apple? Pear? You didn't put it in brackets so we don't know what you mean! 😂
tuttifuckinfruity · 15/04/2021 13:03

@Bellyundertit

Grapefruit is nice . Love it .I prefer fruit.
Eh?

Grape is a fruit too. Sorry, I mean (grape).

This is just getting weirder by the minute.

CirqueDeMorgue · 15/04/2021 13:04

I drink cheap vodka. 🤷‍♀️

I used to too but then I started to buy some and honestly, there's no difference between £5 and say £7 or £8 wines. In fact I've had much nicer £5 bottles than £8. Also the more expensive ones tend to be 14 or even 14.5% which is actually really strong. Hangover city here we come.

Here is go! Thunderbird grape wine...

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/04/2021 13:05

I know a little about wine but am no connoisseur.

If you don’t even know what Chardonnay is (white wine made from white grapes) why post op? I don’t like Chablis (made from Chardonnay grape) as it can have a honey taste, which I can’t stand. btw.

However, I used to like the occasional white wine spritzer as long as it is with a crisp Riesling... also white grapes. Wine connoisseurs would turn their nose up at that one. Hey ho.

Then, I also like a decent Pouilly Fuissé, which is made from the white Chardonnay grape.

All to say, personal taste... but sadly my health dictates I hardly ever drink alcohol these days.

But surely, regardless of how nice it is, £5 is cheap for wine?
