How many times do you wear a bra before washing?

AIBU - to wear once only? It’s costing me a fortune in underwear as they wear out/ grey quickly

I do normal bras after about 3 or 4 days, sports bras after every wear. I often wear vest tops though and wash them after one day.

thenameshastings · 15/04/2021 13:08

Around a week, really don’t see how a bra is in the same category as socks or pants

RampantIvy · 15/04/2021 13:12

Once. It's underwear.

It’s not the same as knickers though is it? Unless you wear your bra on your bottom.

I wear one for 3 or 4 days before changing. Mine don’t get sweaty except on extremely hot days.

Re not getting sweaty in the bra area, What about your back and boobs? Not to mention skin shedding on a tight garment

Nope. I just don’t get sweaty there unless it is 30 degrees or I exercise a lot. I only wear a 32B anyway, so underboob sweat never happens to me.

Bras become dirty and smelly easily

No they don’t. They really don’t if you aren’t a sweaty person.

Sunshineandflipflops · 15/04/2021 13:13

Every couple of days, unless it's summer and i get hot, in which case once.

littlepeas · 15/04/2021 13:15

It depends and tbh I’m not even sure how to answer! I wear sport’s bras most of the time (work in fitness industry) and those are washed after one wear. If I wear an underwired bra it’s never for more than a few hours at a time - only really when I need to be smart and then I always take it off the second I can. Probably wear 2/3 times for 3/4 hours per time across a fortnight or so. I’m not a very sweaty person though.

littlepeas · 15/04/2021 13:16

Ha! Autocorrect decided the bra belonged to sport. Sports bra Grin.

Cameleongirl · 15/04/2021 13:22

Every two days, except in the summer as the weather's hot here so I need to have a fresh one daily - and sometimes twice daily if I'm going out in the evening.

I wear a sports bra for exercise, though.

HappydaysArehere · 15/04/2021 13:25

About twice a week as it is the only part of underwear that doesn’t smell or get dirty. Everything else is changed daily.

InescapableDeath · 15/04/2021 13:26

I've had a lot of skin problems with my boobs so I mostly wear cotton bras once then wash, however I'm probably totally minging in other ways. I don't wash bedcovers as often as most people here, I wear trousers until they're actually dirty (or smelly).

littlepeas · 15/04/2021 13:30

The thing that worries me about not washing things ‘until they smell’ is the point at which they start to smell is probably going to be reached while you are wearing the item! Tops, for example, are never smelly after one wear, but would be a bit smelly by the end of the second day. My ds (12 and would dodge soap forever if possible) would say it doesn’t matter because we have to stay 2m away from people anyway!

ThinkingIsAllowed · 15/04/2021 13:33

about a week

Laiste · 15/04/2021 13:34

Bedsheets get changed in the middle of the night, every night. Pillow cases have 2 hours. I recarpet the living room once a month.

ShockShock

Bedsheets here are stripped off hourly during the night. I wear a full hazmat suit and mask and use tongs to do it. They go straight out of the window and into the hazardous waste bags below. It's normal among my friends?

I mean - my god - who bought you up???!

MeadowHay · 15/04/2021 13:35

Usually three days but less if it smells/I've been very active/it's been very hot.

mrfrostywasadick · 15/04/2021 13:36

"Everyday because it's underwear" Grin
What is coming out of your boobs? You don't pee or menstruate from your boob. God forbid anything would touch your boob for a day dirty and ashamed.

I chuck mine in the wash every few days or once a week. I have big boobs and buying bras are a nightmare. I really hate bra shopping.

Yep we are all different with different standards of hygiene etc etc. I watch a programme a few years ago and it tested bras for bacteria etc and the results of some made me feel a bit queasy - but others wouldn't worry about it - each to their own.

Lowkeyloopy · 15/04/2021 13:45

Some of these responses have blown my mind! I HATE washing bras because I follow the "rule" about never machine washing underwired bras or they change their shape/ the wire comes out. Otherwise I'd be buying new ones on the regular and they're flipping expensive.

So I wait as loooong as I possibly can before washing them I'm afraid. I don't smell, neither do my bras, and I don't understand the comments about bras being underwear - yes from time to time you might be standing on a crowded train in July, feeling the sweat pooling around the strap on your mid-back, thinking "Damn, that's another one for the hand-washing pile", but outside of situations like that, what are you worried about?

Also the impact of all this washing on the environment makes me despair.

If you are one of the women merrily hand-washing their bras on a daily basis, please, please get in touch and I'll find you some odd jobs to fill the time you clearly have too much of!

I've read so many MN posts from women talking about how over-busy and stressed they are - DHs, DCs and work absorbing every ounce of energy they have...

Ladies, do yourselves a favour - step away from the bras..!

Underarm sweat on the side bits.... if you have bigger boobs then they do sweat underneath the massive gigantean things
Isaidnope · 15/04/2021 13:50

2-3 days, I’m not a very sweaty or smelly person.

MeanderingGently · 15/04/2021 13:56

I have clean clothes on every single day, including my bras, so daily. And if it's hot weather and I'm sweaty I'll probably have an extra shower and change my underwear through the day (after sports, gardening or whatever).
I can't understand all these people who wear clothes which are next to the skin twice or more times, there is nothing more lovely than fresh clean clothes (well, perhaps fresh clean sheets as well!)

Barbie222 · 15/04/2021 13:59

Once. Love these threads, they're proper point and gape!

DuchessOfSausage · 15/04/2021 14:00

I put on what my maid lays out for me, so I have no idea.

BertramLacey · 15/04/2021 14:01

Tops, for example, are never smelly after one wear, but would be a bit smelly by the end of the second day.

For me, they don't necessarily smell towards the end of the second day. Generally I can get 3-4 days out of them. However, I don't worry if they are starting to smell. Sure, I don't want to go around reeking of bad BO. But a faint whiff of warm human body? What's the problem?

I recently started to use soap nuts to do my laundry and it's made me really aware of just how much even mild laundry detergent smells and I don't like it. I find many of the perfumes we spray around to avoid 'smelling' far more nauseating than normal body smells. I'm not talking about the stench of stale sweat, piss, shit or alcohol you get off some people - that is rank. I mean the normal scent you get off a human.

I like the scent of my horse and I think humans who don't over-wash or use too many heavy scents can have a similar rather pleasant smell. I wonder what it is we're all so afraid of?

Laiste · 15/04/2021 14:02

Seriously though, if you have big boobs it's a whole other ball game than neat (pert) breasts.

I'm not overweight and i get £££ bras with good lift, but where the wire goes tucked in right in the crease beneath my 34Gs it does get warm and a bit clamy. My bra easily gets stale smelling after a day especially if i've been rushing about.

I go 2 days max between washing a bra.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 15/04/2021 14:04

Until I think it needs washed. Probably about 2 weeks. I have terrible trouble getting g bras to fit so have to be careful how often I wash them.
