How many times do you wear a bra before washing?

AIBU - to wear once only? It’s costing me a fortune in underwear as they wear out/ grey quickly

@RampantIvy

I don’t like the thought of hanging dirty clothes up with my clean ones.

I don't put clothes I have worn back into the wardrobe, but I will wear a pair of jeans several times before washing them. I just hang them over the bannister at night to air before putting them on again the next day. You must spend an awful lot of time washing if you only ever wear all your clothes only once.

I agree with PP that there are some overly fastidious posters on this thread. When I get dressed after this morning's shower I will put yesterday's bra and jeans on (both clean yesterday) and clean everything else. I don't have pets or small children and don't usually do any dirty jobs.

Nope. I do the clothes wash once a week on Sunday ready for the working week and that’s it. Tends to be spilt across two washes but it would be anyway regardless of how often I wear things because of running colours. If someone desperately needs something clean because an accident has happened then I might stick it on earlier but that’s very, very rare. Obviously I don’t have a baby or anything Grin

DP tends to only wear his work uniform and pyjamas/gym clothes on the week days which is 5 shirts (one for each day) and two pairs of pants so he wears the pants more than once.

Bedding and towels get washed on a Saturday also.

I do many things to reduce my environmental footprint but not washing my underwear isn't going to save the planet.

No-one is suggesting you stop washing your underwear, just that (with some exceptions) it's probably not necessary to wash a bra after every wear. I admit that one is less hyperbolic and therefore more difficult to contradict, but we are where we are. And it will be many minor things which add up to help us damage the planet less - washing your bras less often is amongst the easier things to do.

By caring for these garments we buy fewer of them, which saves water, fuel and materials involved in their manufacture, transport and retail.

Studies show that 75 - 80 percent of our clothing's life cycle impact comes from washing and drying www.treehugger.com/how-to-go-green-laundry-4858690 . And whilst caring for garments is good, why does that include washing them after every wear? Some more tips here, and they also include washing clothes less frequently learn.eartheasy.com/articles/7-ways-to-make-your-laundry-more-eco-friendly/

This is an argument for washing them less frequently, not more.

@StarlightLady

Am l the only person on here who has different styles and/or colours for different oufits? Do the worn ones go back in the drawer?
No on my bedroom chair, tend to wear comfier bras at weekend, e.g. sports, bralet.
ChronicallyCurious · 17/04/2021 13:21

Also unsure as to how my washing of clothing after one wear makes me overly fastidious 😂

IMO it’s basic hygiene but each to their own. I wouldn’t want to go in to the office and have someone look at me and think ‘wasn’t she wearing that yesterday? How has she had time to wash it?’.

I wouldn’t want to go into the office and have people know that I’m wearing the same bra as yesterday either, but that’s why I put a top over it.

I wouldn't think that at all. If it still looked clean and the wearer didn't smell I might think he or she was being sensible. That is if I even remembered what they were wearing the day before.

Why would they think that? And what does it matter anyway? Make the decision you want to make, for your reasons. If anyone thought that of me and actually voiced it, I'd explain what I've said here - there's no need to wash something every time you wear it.

Do you regularly inspect each others bras?

What the heck are you wearing to work that means everyone get a a good look at your bra?!

Lol this comment wasn’t about a bra. A PP called me fastidious for saying I wash my bra after one wear like every other item of clothing. Nobody is looking at my bra, I don’t even wear a bra most days.

To answer PP post it would definitely raise an eyebrow in my office if someone wore the same outfit two days in a row. However, I do work in a head office for a fashion company and most days it is like a fashion show at work. I have always washed my clothes after one use, I think my work place has made me even more aware of it though. IMO, once it’s been worn it’s dirty. I wouldn’t hang it back up with my clean clothes so in the wash basket it goes.

RaiseTheBeastie · 17/04/2021 14:16

Probably every two - three weeks. Accounting for a few days where I may not wear a bra at all (much more common now WFH) that's probably 15 wears on average.

I only own three bras...one has removable straps for when needed. I tend to wear the same bra every day until I wash it rather than having more than one worn bra on the go.

I think I'm the least sweaty person I know, I don't even wear deoderant every day as I don't need to. I shower often, my skin is clean, I have small un-sweaty boobs. I don't see why I'd need to wash them more often 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ooh they don't see your bra, not like a topSmile
ChronicallyCurious · 17/04/2021 15:03

@woodhill yes I know! That was just an example I gave as to why I wash my clothes every time I wear them Smile

woodhill · 17/04/2021 16:42

Yes I understand, I try to wear a different outfit each day but may wear trousers or skirt later in the week but clean top every day

idril · 17/04/2021 16:43

@CrankyFrankie

Makes me think of an old episode of that Trinny and Susanna (?) program with a woman who hadn’t washed her bra in 8 years! They tested it and it had all sorts of deadly bacteria on it 🤣
My cat probably has deadly bacteria on his fur but I still stroke him.

If my bra has deadly bacteria on it, luckily I have my skin as a physical barrier and an immune system if the deadly bacteria does penetrate my skin. Plus, I wash my skin every day so if the deadly bacteria is transferred to my skin, it gets washed away when I shower.

The only thing I wash after one wear is knickers.

Deadly pathogens are everywhere. Our bodies are continually fighting them for us. I don't think the bacteria in my bra is one that I should be particularly concerned about.

I don't leave it 8 years but I do wash my bra not very often as I said above since a lady in Bravissimo told me that washing them stretches and ruins them so to wash it as little as you can get away with (which for me is about every 3 weeks and even then it doesn't smell - I just wash it because I think it needs it). My bra is well fitted so comes nowhere near my armpits and I don't have large boobs so I don't get particularly sweaty under my boobs either.

I don't seem to have come to any harm from infrequent washing of my bra in the 15 or so years that I went to Bravissimo.

I had to laugh at both of you, I was too amazed to write anything myself. Never heard anything so stupid, and as for a boil wash, wouldn't it melt the elastic? Perhaps it "falls off" after an hour!!

Even jeans/trousers/other outer clothes

Yes everything apart from my coat obviously including pyjamas. I have a cat but not messy. I own far too many clothes so if I wear something once the likelihood is I won’t wear it again for a while unless it’s something I really like and I don’t like the thought of hanging dirty clothes up with my clean ones.

THIS!!

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 23:38

Why wouldn't you wear a pair of jeans more than once @ilovesouthlondon?

You know both those posters were joking, don't you? Confused

EmeraldShamrock · 18/04/2021 01:29

When I'm leaving the house or expecting someone so probably 9 hours over 3 days throughout lockdown.
I could never sleep in a bra now I hate wearing one anytime, I need a professional fitting.

JMR185 · 18/04/2021 10:00

@ShirleyPhallus - very funny, I laughed out loud. But to answer the question, I change the ones I wear for exercise after each wear and others every couple of days or every wear if I've been doing major cleaning or gardening. I am a bit of a sweaty Betty though and don't judge others with filthy habits.Wink

BertramLacey · 18/04/2021 10:11

I don’t like the thought of hanging dirty clothes up with my clean ones.

What is it that makes them dirty though? Genuine question, I'm curious as to what the problem is. If I lived in London and commuted by tube then I'd wash my clothes much more often, as it really is grimy and dirty there. I can understand then that there are external sources of dirt, and I'd want to minimise the amount that got into my home.

However, I live rurally. I sometimes get mud on my clothes but if they're things I wearing for walking or riding I won't necessarily wash them straight away. Experience suggests that my horse will splatter mud on them within 2 minutes of contact, so it seems a bit pointless really. And I'm not bothered if the clothes have my skin cells and bacteria on them. I wash everyday and the clothes will have skin cells on them as soon as they come into contact with me, so wearing them several times before washing doesn't make much difference really.

StarlightLady · 18/04/2021 10:35

@EmeraldShamrock - l have never slept in a bra. Even on a long haul flight, l take it off for the night.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2021 10:51

I don’t like the thought of hanging dirty clothes up with my clean ones.

Neither do I, so I don't. I would sling a pair of jeans over the bannister to wear again the next day. Unless you have a very mucky job or have a job that has strict protocols around infection control I don't believe that a pair of jeans, trousers or a skirt needs to be washed after one single wear.
