How many times do you wear a bra before washing?

AIBU - to wear once only? It’s costing me a fortune in underwear as they wear out/ grey quickly

I don’t own enough bras to wash after each wear. I have to wear expensive bras due to size so can only afford 3 or 4 or on the go at a time. I only tend to wash when I need to.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/04/2021 06:49

I wonder if all the ‘what about the environment!’ wailers can honestly say they’ve never put their wain in a disposable nappy (for up to 4 years each according to MN toilet training trends) or used a wipe or a nappy sack.

Talkingmouse · 16/04/2021 06:56

Rarely wear one. Much better without 😉...but 2 or 3 wears at least unless v hot. Buy 1 bra, 3 knickers, in a set.

rosegoldivy · 16/04/2021 06:56

@carryonlikeaporkchop that done me in 🤣🤣🤣🤣

shallIswim · 16/04/2021 07:42

Depends on how active I am. Can be five days. If I'm showering twice a day it's not getting smelly.

countrygirl99 · 16/04/2021 08:07

@ginghamtablecloths

I am quoting M&S, countrygirl99 who (obviously in the business of trying to fool us into buying them more often) came out with this ridiculous idea. If they relied on people like me they would have gone out of business a very long time ago. I've even been known to mend them if necessary.
Oh, I hate their bras and their fitters are awful so probably safe to ignore
BertramLacey · 16/04/2021 09:53

Of course bras get sweaty, unless you're completely sedentary.

People are physiologically variable and live in different environments. I can cycle 10 miles on a push bike and not sweat, so long as it's a cool day and I keep my speed down to a comfortable commuting pace. I do sweat more when less fit but in general find moderate activity in the usual UK climate doesn't make me sweat. I appreciate that others may sweat more, or less, than I do.

I wonder if all the ‘what about the environment!’ wailers can honestly say they’ve never put their wain in a disposable nappy (for up to 4 years each according to MN toilet training trends) or used a wipe or a nappy sack.

Well a. it's not 'wailing' to express legitimate concerns about what we're doing to the environment. No amount of underhand rhetoric will help us with the crisis we're creating, although it may help you wilfully ignore it. And b. I went one step further and just didn't have children. Sure, on a site called Mumsnet, that won't be the popular option. But actually yes, there are many other environmental choices I make, including commuting by push bike. I'm also careful about food miles and food wastage, ensure I reduce, re-use and recycle, in that order, have cut out single-use plastics as far as I can and make use of solar and wind power whenever possible.

Yes - I'm definitely made for cold countries, I hardly sweat at all!

sbhydrogen · 16/04/2021 15:21

Hmm, probably about a week or so. Or until it smells.

Member869894 · 16/04/2021 15:50

I wear mine for a couple of weeks

HeronLanyon · 16/04/2021 15:58

I have honestly never had a sweaty bra unless on hot or humid climate - maybe if doing mega gardening job on really hot day here but never otherwise. Totally get this is not everyone’s physiology/build/frame etc.

ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel · 16/04/2021 16:40

There was a very rude rhyme when I was school.

“Smell your ma’s sweaty bra
Get a back shaft from your da”

Ick.

expatinspain · 16/04/2021 17:27

Depends. I have a bra that I love and I wear it all the time, so probably wash it every couple of weeks (more in the hot weather). I have a few other that I'll just wear out or wear while my favourite is being washed, so I'd probably only wear them once or twice. I really need to find some other comfy bras. They're so expensive though, so I buy them very infrequently.

abigailthespiderinthehat · 16/04/2021 17:27

Probably 2-3 times a year. Yes a year!

woodhill · 16/04/2021 17:40

@StarlightLady

As for those referring to environmental damage: As l wash mine after one wear in a delicates bag with my regular washing loads, it does not use more power, nor more water, nor more detergent.

And for me, a daily clean bra feels better.

I think it also depends how expensive the bras are and your cup size possibly. I tend to handwash as it prolongs their life as my bras are expensive.
Flaunch · 16/04/2021 17:44

Loads

wildchild554 · 16/04/2021 17:47

If it's a white bra you can bleach it, you can also dye them as colour can fade and they look tatty. Other than that I wash every couple of days unless it's a particularly hot and sweaty day.

Annie202 · 16/04/2021 17:49

A good few days unless it has been very warm. Mind you, that doesn't often happen in North East Scotland!

MissMaple82 · 16/04/2021 17:54

Couple of weeks. I shower every day and wear 24 hour deodorant. My bras are expensive, up to 50 quid per bra, its not necessary to wash often unless your really sweating.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 16/04/2021 17:57

Weeks probably. I also have some special socks that you can wear for 30 days without washing Easter Grin

Januaryissodull · 16/04/2021 18:02

I'm not sure, but probably several wears.

I have about 7 bras which I wear on rotate, then I tend to wash them all together whenever I can be bothered.

So they might get anything from 3-7 wears before washing.

I'm definitely mumsnet certified disgusting though.

LisaD76 · 16/04/2021 18:02

No you are not unreasonable, but I have now about 30 or so bras as mine never wear or discolour. The secret is to not hand wash or use one of those special bags, do a wash for bras only once a week, do up clasps and lay them in a double stack with a colour catcher in the drum, and use the hand wash programme. My blacks haven’t faded, my pale colours are not greyed and discoloured, and all my bright colours are still vibrant. Some of my bras are probably about 15 years old and still look as good as new.

Mesoavocado · 16/04/2021 18:05

Oooh until recently once a week but friends at worn shamed me and now probably three or four days max

BertramLacey · 16/04/2021 18:26

Cold tea is a really useful dye for old white underwear. It turns it a nice antique lace colour. NB use black tea, with no milk (or sugar) for the avoidance of doubt.

viagrafalls · 16/04/2021 18:26

@ShirleyPhallus

I take it off after an hour or so and bleach / boil wash at 90 degrees. Anything else is discusting tbh
Oh dearie me, how awful, I couldn't bear to have one on for more than a minute before replacing it with one that had been boiled then sterilised and vacuum packed.
