AIBU - to wear once only? It’s costing me a fortune in underwear as they wear out/ grey quickly

@NC4THISS

2 weeks if wearing every day. Longer if not wearing everyday.

Essentially until it smells.

Yeah, this pretty much. I also don't shower every day. By MN standards I'm a total tramp. I don't care.
Mistressinthetulips · 15/04/2021 18:02

Emmylousings what a ridiculous, judgemental post. Knowing someone washes a bra more regularly than you tells you precisely nothing about how often they wash other clothing, towels, bed linen etc; or indeed what steps in general they take toward protecting the environment.

StevieG55 · 15/04/2021 18:10

Do people actually machine wash them everyday?

I've found they lose the shape etc once they are washed. Most say hand wash but I'm rubbish at that. I do have quite a lot of bras so I just rotate them a lot and probably wash them more in the summer every 3-4wears sometimes more sometimes less.

Anystarinthesky · 15/04/2021 18:13

I wear pull on bras, I change them every day.

Mummadeze · 15/04/2021 18:16

A few weeks. I don’t think they need to be washed more often. I do wash them sooner if they smell.

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/04/2021 18:17

@fussychica

I usually buy matching sets 1 underwired bra to 3 pants. So wear a bra for 3 days and pants once. Have separate sports bra for exercise worn once. My underwired bras have always been fine in my machine on a gentle wash. It's been years since I had a bra where the wire wore through due to washing or otherwise. They are either better made now or I have a better machine.
That’s actually a really good system! I don’t normally buy matching knickers, they tend to be expensive
Shireslass · 15/04/2021 18:18

I have taken a Stella McCartney approach to bra washing

I read an article a while back where she doesn't really wash them- this was the closest I could find...

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.womanandhome.com/amp/life/news-entertainment/stella-mccartney-wash-clothes-bra-326885/

Agree with those who say about breastfeeding bras though- they def started to smell quickly

Nonpayingdads · 15/04/2021 18:19

Erm about two weeks or until they smell. Our planet is dying why would you wash anything if it’s not dirty?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 15/04/2021 18:20

Every night, I work in the NHS and have to boil wash my entire outfit for the day.

ArtemisiaGentle · 15/04/2021 18:22

I wear mine 2-4 tines before washing unless I'm sweaty.

Blah1881 · 15/04/2021 18:26

I don’t wash it unless it smells. As I bathe every day (and wear deodorant) that means I wash it every 6 weeks tops. I have two bras. I also have sports bras and do wash those after every run/work out. I find that washing good clothes is the death of them. I have one skirt I have worn maybe 50 times without ever washing it, just carefully spot cleaning it if required

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 15/04/2021 18:27

Three days probably - depends when I'm doing the washing, whether it's a colour that clashes with my top...

Had an in the office day earlier in the week; I commented it was the first time in ages I'd worn proper trousers (eg, not jeans or leggings); a colleague said it was the first time she'd worn underwear in months?!

MirandaMarple · 15/04/2021 18:27

Depends what I've eaten and what's fallen into it.

YouokHun · 15/04/2021 18:31

@ShirleyPhallus

I take it off after an hour or so and bleach / boil wash at 90 degrees. Anything else is discusting tbh ????!!!!! *@ShirleyPhallus*?

how many bras do you get through every day?
how long do they last given they are supposed to be handwashed in low temp water?
do you do the same for your undies too?

so many questions!

Yes I do go through a lot of bras but I think it’s essential in the pursuit of hygiene. I am working on a prototype of an iron bra so it withstands the washing a bit better.

I change knickers even more frequently, around every 10-15 minutes depending on how hot the weather is. I boil wash those in a mix of bleach, bicarbonate of soda and creosote to ensure they’re really clean.

Bedsheets get changed in the middle of the night, every night. Pillow cases have 2 hours. I recarpet the living room once a month.

Anyone who does less is a huge skank and I judge them for it

@ShirleyPhallus you are proper minging Hun.

Carpets are skin particle magnets and should never feature in a clean home. Pants should be worn for 10 mins max and then soaked for 30 days in a mixture of WD40, creosote, bicarbonate of soda AND the tears of Widow Twanky.

Your lack of attention to hygiene has left some worried Mumsnetters with more questions than answers!

Shrivelled · 15/04/2021 18:41

I wear natural fabrics and have good personal hygiene so I don’t wash bras very often as they don’t need it. I used to wear synthetic fabrics and had to wash them all the time as they made me sweat and clothing stank so quickly. Fabric choice makes a huge difference to how often you need to wash your clothes.

woodhill · 15/04/2021 18:43

2 days running then change, sometimes not even all day

fizbosshoes · 15/04/2021 18:44

Sports bras get washed after every wear (sometimes only for 40 min) as they will be sweaty. Other bras probs about 3 times unless its ridiculously hot.

woodhill · 15/04/2021 18:45

I handwash as my bras are boned and expensive

1Morewineplease · 15/04/2021 18:46

@Laiste

ShockShock

Bedsheets here are stripped off hourly during the night. I wear a full hazmat suit and mask and use tongs to do it. They go straight out of the window and into the hazardous waste bags below. It's normal among my friends?

I mean - my god - who bought you up???!

Hazardous waste bags???!!! Honestly... don't you care about the environment? I shred my hazardous waste bags ( which obviously contain duvets , pillows, towels and bras) and use them as a mulch for my parsnips. It's brilliant for keeping elk off your parsnips.
BertramLacey · 15/04/2021 18:46

Your washing machine will use a lot more water than my small bucket will and yes you are washing other things still more water than what the handwashing will use.

Most modern washing machines have eco settings that save water. Plus, the machine is going on anyway, to wash things like linen which I don't ever handwash. I have had to wash bed linen by hand in the past, and trust me, it takes loads of water. So, the machine is on anyway and the bras take up a very small part of the load. You need to see it in total, not just: it takes more water for your 3 bras in a washing machine than my 20 in a bucket.

MissJeanLouise · 15/04/2021 19:03

I have one proper post-surgery bra which was expensive, which I wear for work - washed about once a week unless I’ve been particularly sweaty. I change out of it into comfy crop top / t-shirt bras as soon as I’m not wearing my prosthetic, they’d get washed more often. I’m looking forward to shopping for new bras after my reconstruction surgery - as a plus, my ‘new’ boob will be smaller and they’ll reduce and lift the other one to match, so I’ll hopefully be able to shop for nicer ones which won’t resemble a hammock stuffed with old potatoes which have been hoiked up from around my knees Grin

PinkiOcelot · 15/04/2021 19:06

I only wear matching bra and knicker sets, so once. The same as my knickers.

Lulu1919 · 15/04/2021 19:25

Once if I got hot n sweaty....I'll then hand wash
Three times if not ..then machine wash

GoryGilmore · 15/04/2021 19:27

Once. It’s underwear. You only wear underwear once.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 15/04/2021 19:29

@GoryGilmore

Once. It’s underwear. You only wear underwear once.
You only wear underwear once. Plenty wear bras more often without the world imploding, as evidenced by this thread.
