What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

@Frauhubert

I am so sad too that skinny jeans are out of fashion. I LOVE skinny jeans but feel old wearing them. I literally feel the eyes of the Gen Z on me laughing. I have slim legs so skinny jeans looked great on me. And you could wear them EVERYWHERE! Work, coffee, walk, fancy dinner- they could be styled up or down. How am i supposed to look sexy in those awful baggy jeans and a t-shirt. Or is being sexy out of fashion too?
I think "sexy" as a primary aspiration for young women probably is going out of fashion, see also high heels. That can't be a bad thing.
TheRogueApostrophe · 16/04/2021 08:43

I'm not keen on all the "skinny jeans only look good on 6 ft models", "mum jeans only look good on skinny people" type comments. It's a subtle way of policing what other people wear. People should wear whatever they feel comfortable in. I'm certainly no 6 f model but I live in skinny jeans and will continue to do so because they're bloody comfy in all seasons and go with all my shoes.

Younger generations have always berated older generations for what they wear, thinking they know best while recycling old fashions. So what? I personally don't like the look so I won't be trying to emulate their style. They think I look shit. C'est la vie! I'll be wearing skinny jeans when they come back in fashion for my grandkids 🤣

Definitely no bad thing if heels are going out of fashion considering the damage they do. Still, I do love me a pair of heels and what they do to my legs 🤣

TatianaBis · 16/04/2021 08:47

At the risk of sounding like a teen, skinnies have been over for a long time.

As my son would say “cringe boomer”.

RampantIvy · 16/04/2021 08:50

I don't understand the "skinny jeans are deeply unfashionable" comments TBH. Loads of people still wear them round here. DD has loads of baggier jeans, but wore her skinnies yesterday, and looked fabulous.

Mckmck123 · 16/04/2021 08:54

I have long skinny legs and skinny jeans make me look like a giraffe

yumscrumfatbum · 16/04/2021 08:57

DS works in an Uber trendy clothes shop and they haven't stocked skinny jeans for two years. There target market is the youth though not the middle aged like myself! I've been weaning myself off them for a while. There are lots of inbetween styles with a rolled up bottom.

mustlovegin · 16/04/2021 09:30

YANBU OP. I won't give them up Grin

abc4321 · 16/04/2021 09:32

I just can't get with the high waisted look. Reminds me of Helen Daniels in Neighbours who wore her trousers so high, she barely had any body before her neck. For high waisted shorts, it also seems to result in a up the bum/cheeks out look. Which is fine but must be a bit draughty.

Then again, the fact that I'm old enough to remember when Neighbours first started means that it doesn't really matter that I don't "get it". I think skinny jeans look nice on women, but not so good on the sturdier man. As for the loafers with no socks.....

mustlovegin · 16/04/2021 09:33

High waisted anything is the work of the devil Grin

Artichokepiglet · 16/04/2021 09:55

Honestly, I think you should just wear what suits you. If you feel and look good in skinny jeans then keep on wearing them regardless of the trend.

Mum jeans just don’t suit me and I don’t want to look like my own mother for a few years just because!

TheRogueApostrophe · 16/04/2021 09:56

Reminds me of Helen Daniels in Neighbours oh yes, absolutely! Helen and Madge rocked the mum jeans.

TheOrigRights · 16/04/2021 10:10

Connie Beauchamp (Casualty and Holby) is the champion of the high waisted slack!

abc4321 · 16/04/2021 10:13

Ah yes Madge, how could I forget her. I confess to occasionally watching Neighbours and Roxy is very much keeping the high waisted look going. I don't recall Helen Daniels showing the same amount of bottom cheek as Roxy though. My in laws also wear their slacks vertiginously high.

It's such a struggle finding non high waisted jeans at the moment.

A bit late to the party here, I have mom jeans, just cannot get them to look good on me and have no idea what to wear them with.

I don’t like wearing my skinnies now (apart from what someone else said, black skinnies for the evening as they just go with a dressy top better)

I keep seeing people in what can’t be mom jeans now I know how they really look, but in looser style legs rolled up at the bottom and they look flattering and ‘summery’ for want of a better expression. What are these? Would these be ‘slim leg?’ Does anyone have a picture of them wearing a slim leg with trainers so I can see if that’s what I mean before wasting yet more money on jeans I’ll never wear.

I’m 5’3 and a size 8, so fairly petite if this makes W difference to what jeans I should buy!

sageflower · 16/04/2021 11:36

If you can still get into your skinnies after lockdown then you are cool!
I'm wearing baggier jeans but not out of choice

Sounds like skinny boyfriends. Google ‘boyfriend jeans’ The current boyfriends are slim cut with roll ups.
Oilseed · 16/04/2021 12:12

@TatianaBis, do you have a pair? Are they flattering? I think that’s the look I’d want to go for, relaxed and flattering. I’ll have a google, thanks!

TatianaBis · 16/04/2021 12:22

Yes I do, several. Very comfortable, altho obviously it depends on the brand.

80sMum · 16/04/2021 12:25

I remember being really quite annoyed when flares went out of fashion in the early 1980s and all I could find was the, to me at the time, "old-fashioned" straight-legged and slim leg jeans of the type that my mother had worn in the 1960s!

Eventually, I gave in and got used to the straight leg style - only to find of course, that it eventually went out of fashion again and boot-leg and flares were back in!

I adopted boot-leg and flares again quite happily, as they reminded me of my teenage years. Then they went out of fashion and skinny jeans came in! I avoided skinny jeans until about 2 years ago, when I finally found some that actually fitted my thighs and I realised that they don't look as bad on me as I thought they would!

So, now it's all changed again! I'm not sure if I can be bothered with it any more. Just lately (with the help of lockdown, as nobody ever sees me!) I've taken to wearing elastic waisted pull up stretchy leggings and have grown rather fond of the comfort!
Maybe I'll stick with those from now on!

MadMadaMim · 16/04/2021 12:26

DD is 17. She's recently replaced her black skinny jeans (jeggings) , and purchased a pair of tapered designer blue jeans and blue jean flares. She wears all styles.

She's very into clothes/labels/trends and still at an age where her peers' opinions on how she looks are important (thankfully, maturing out of this as time passes).

If it looks good and you're comfortable, why care what the trend is

bluebluezoo · 16/04/2021 12:30

Oh thank god. Fucking hate skinny jeans. So uncomfortable and not even flattering.

Can I go back to my 90’s low rise Levi’s now? I can’t bear anything on my waist and am hourglass shape so low/mid rise suit me best... high rise make me look like a sack tied in the middle!

changi · 16/04/2021 12:42

and not even flattering

Perhaps try some flares.

@gottenhaitch

I refuse to take fashion advice from kids who look like this.
Tricolore! 😆
The90swereadecadeago · 16/04/2021 12:46

I have to say I hold myself better in skinny jeans, I feel more feminine in the close cut... or maybe it’s because I’m sucking my lockdown stomach in, who knows 😆
