What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

Loving this thread!

As the oldest of the millennials, my generation alpha DS laughed out loud at a gaggle of Gen Z girls the other day; he asked why they were wearing ‘marshmallow shoes’ (those hideous, gigantic, white trainers, in actual fact). All had paired them with enormous ‘Dad’ jeans and quite frankly, it’s not a look I’ll be racing to emulate anytime ever.

I’ve always found skinny jeans quite uncomfortable and they often made my legs itch, so I’m happy that looser styles are back in vogue!

Just as well, as an elder millennial you’d look a right fright in that.

Young people wear ridiculous things to highlight their youth and what they can get away with.

Enlisting your child in ridicule won’t turn back the clock unfortunately.

FloconDeNeige · 16/04/2021 16:58

🤣 My child came out with it of his own accord, and being 4 years old, can hardly be accused of ridiculing!

Who wants to turn back the clock? Don’t tar me with your brush!

Why so touchy?

I've just got a lovely pair of skinny flares from Zara. Best of both Worlds Grin

woodhill · 16/04/2021 19:27

Remember baggy jeans with piping in the 80s and drainpipes

Even the NYT is reporting on it! #slownewsday

@Frauhubert

The question is- how will i wear knee high boots next winter? Are they out of fashion too? Or am i allowed to wear them with tights and a skirt? Are leggings out of fashion? Since they have the skinny shape. So many questions, and i don’t know any snotty gen z brats to ask
My DD says tights and a pleated tennis skirt for the uber trendy look. But I'm sure by next winter that will be the height of uncool already.

Same! I love them.

I thought skinnies in knee-high boots were a bit old hat by now

But I’m probably wrong

If you love it, wear it. Am sure it looks great

You're not wrong. I'm sad because it's practical, but demand for knee high boots is way down (I was a footwear buyer until recently). It's a look that's been replaced with ankle boots for a few years.
lovevlyt · 17/04/2021 07:33

Yes I read an article about this and it made me vary sad! But I am also happy to embrace the mom jeans so going shopping today to buy some hehe

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 17/04/2021 07:33

Yes, I have some lovely knee high boots that I like to wear with mini skirts, but that look is probably even more old hat!

@AmberItsACertainty

MiMong that YouTube made me laugh

I like all kinds of jeans. Boot cut and flares are my favourite so I'm glad they're back in fashion. I have boobs and hips and for some reason high rise jeans make me look like I have no torso. Skirts that sit on the waist I always order a size up so they sit lower on my hips.

I’m a big boob, hip and ass girl and High rise jeans make my arse look bigger than the moon Grin

I’ve always preferred low rise jeans, because they make my bum look smaller! Grin

Skinny jeans suck in my thighs too and make them look slimmer. So I’m sticking with em Grin

yeOldeTrout · 17/04/2021 07:57

@bluebluezoo

Can I go back to my 90’s low rise Levi’s now? I can’t bear anything on my waist and am hourglass shape so low/mid rise suit me best

I'm intrigued. Didn't they fall off? My problem with low rise was big old gap in the waist so no grip on my waist. Low rise is barely above my public line. I wonder if you have a very 'short' waist. How hour glass are you? I was 38-28-38 but long way from the 28" W to 38" hips.

As an hourglass, at a "free jeans fitting session", I had flares recommended to me (back when no slim fit at all were available anywhere). As I understood it, flares are good for apple shapes or the plump ppl trying to draw eyes away from their round middle. I had anything but a round middle!! I had lovely indented waist and muscular legs to show off.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 08:02

Like you @yeOldeTrout I was forever hitching up low rise jeans as they were always sliding down. As a pear shape with a 12" difference between waist and hips I found low rise so very uncomfortable as well as they cut in to my widest part. I think I am long waisted as well so low rise will never be an option for me.

ninja · 17/04/2021 08:05

Showing my age as I remember when skinny jeans came IN and thinking how ridiculous I've never wear them!

Fashions change and change again. You get used to the new fashion. I think after lockdown a lot of people just don't want to pride themselves I to more restrictive clothes!

Standrewsschool · 17/04/2021 08:07

Sorry folks, it’s my fault they’re no longer fashionable, as I avoided the trend until last year. Brought my first pair, and then they became unfashionable. Been wearing bootcuts (due to Trinny and Suzanne) all the way through as they suit my pear shape body. Oh well, at least I don’t have to buy any new jeans as I already have some.

I did try some mom jeans but they came up short. I believe that’s the look, but they felt like I was wearing trousers I had grown too tall for.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 08:09

I find that as well. We are still struggling to reach double figures temperature-wise where I live, so cropped trousers and jeans worn with bare ankles is not a comfortable look yet.

LongHotSummerJustPassedMeBy · 17/04/2021 08:12

I do wear straight leg as well as skinny jeans. However Mom jeans didn't suit me the first time round. I am the same age as Jennifer Aniston and have no desire to dress like Rachel did in the first season of 'Friends'.

Northernlass99 · 17/04/2021 08:13

Old news I am afraid. Threads like this have been on here for a few years now.

Personally I cannot bear to pull on skinnies now, they are so restrictive and it feels weird after a year in lounge wear! Plus the muffin top issue with skinnies. Straight jeans or boyfriend jeans rolled up feel much better, more relaxed and comfortable than any skinny, and a fresher look. And I am definitely Gen X.

ElleDubloo · 17/04/2021 08:33

I’m utterly bewildered by this thread. I never notice what people wear unless it looks particularly good/bad (rarely) and had no idea that skinny jeans were out. Who decides these things and how do I keep up to date?Is there a newsletter I could subscribe to?

TheMoth · 17/04/2021 08:48

I thought skinnies looked ridiculous at first, but they actually look much better with my docs. I wish we'd been wearing them instead of boot cut and flares back in the 90s. Way more rock and roll.

Low rise were shit, even as a hipless and fat less teen. And let's face it, boot cut jeans make people look like my little ponies. They flatter no one, but we all pretended they did. The most flattering trousers I own are high, waist, flat front, side zip wide trousers. I waft around like Katherine Hepburn in those.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 17/04/2021 09:31

I'm in my 40s and have been through many jean/trouser fashions, so I know what I find comfortable and what I feel suits my body and personal style. Mum jeans, baggy, highwaisted, wide-legged, bootcut, flares etc are imo hideous, so I shall stick with my low-rise skinnies forever!!

Rainbunny · 17/04/2021 09:53

This is annoying... I hated skinny jeans when they first appeared but after a decade of them I have to admit they're far more practical than bootleg/flared styles.

Also I've put weight on around my middle during lockdown so the thought of wearing highwaisted flared jeans is horrible! At least with skinny jeans I can hide my tummy in longer tops.

I have a feeling they will creep back when we get to Autumn and Winter months simply because people (meaning me!) will want to wear them tucked into boots/wellies etc. In fact, hopefully they'll hang around as a perennial jeans style even if they're not trendy anymore.

Rina66 · 17/04/2021 09:59

We're in danger of talking ourselves in to this! Stand firm, defend your position, there's room for all styles of Jean 😂 autocorrect seems to think I mean the woman, not the product 🙄
