What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

What about if you're a xennial? What are we allowed to wear?

ApplyWithin · 17/04/2021 10:40

I’ve just taken possession of some Whistles barrel leg jeans.

They need to be worn with shorter tops to show off the slim part of the jeans otherwise they look like clown pants.

‘Tis a big step! I shall trial then today to see if people stop, point and laugh.

GuineaPigPosie · 17/04/2021 11:07

I'm 22 so gen z I think? Had no idea about this! You can bury me in my skinny jeans!!!!!!!!!!!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 17/04/2021 11:28

@ApplyWithin go forth brave woman and please report back if anyone pointed and laughed! I am confident they will NOT Grin

@RampantIvy

Like you *@yeOldeTrout* I was forever hitching up low rise jeans as they were always sliding down. As a pear shape with a 12" difference between waist and hips I found low rise so very uncomfortable as well as they cut in to my widest part. I think I am long waisted as well so low rise will never be an option for me.
Same for me and some jeans are so uncomfortable under the crotch itms particularly low rise
abc4321 · 17/04/2021 14:46

And let's face it, boot cut jeans make people look like my little ponies.

That's really made me laugh. I find True Religion (in the outlet sale) are good for low rise Jean lovers. When I tried to buy some bootleg jeans in one of their US stores a few years ago, the very hip (and far younger than me) persuaded me to buy straight leg instead. She was right.

Hopefully less My Little Pony but the hoo-hah cowboy style buttoned pockets are a tad uncomfortable to sit on and I've noticed several very distinctive indent patterns on my chairs. Probably a good prompt to start that post lockdown diet....

I’m a big boob, hip and ass girl and High rise jeans make my arse look bigger than the moon

Hi rise means make most people's arses look bigger than the moon.

Combine with a bootleg cut for the full equine transformation.

changi · 17/04/2021 15:35

High rise jeans...

AmberItsACertainty · 17/04/2021 15:54

Well I love boot cut jeans they suit me but not high rise, low to middle rise. They don't fall down. I'm hourglass but "barely above my pubes" is my hips. They're bone, nothing is falling off them it's not physically possible Confused. High rise anything doesn't make my bum look big it just makes me look like boobs, belt, pubes. Like when people with short necks wear a collar and look like they've no neck at all. I don't understand it, naked or in a dress I've definitely got a waist. Maybe it's not in the right place. Maybe my bum is bigger than I think. But I love my little ponies so I don't care if I look like one Grin 🦄🐎

🤣 Will never be able to unsee now

Standrewsschool · 17/04/2021 18:25

I’m a pear-shape, and high-rise jeans look best on me. Low rise jeans look awful,

TheMoth · 17/04/2021 19:52

The90s you know it's true. Grin

SpringtimeSummertime · 17/04/2021 21:01

Low rise bootcut are the worst combination.
They look awful on the slimmest person.
If you’re even slightly pear/apple shaped - forget it!

eaglejulesk · 17/04/2021 21:26

Having lived in bootcut jeans for years I've just ordered a pair of flares - can't wait!! I'm 61 and have never worn skinnies - hate them, but each to his own.

I'm in NZ and skinnies are definitely not out here. The place I buy my jeans from only has one bootcut style and I don't like them - I've had to resort to ASOS.

Lanique · 17/04/2021 21:55

My Little Ponies 🤣

I can't quite go back to bootcut - yet. I am however only wearing wide legs and flares these days. So nice to be liberated of the skinnies!

I went out out last night (I know right 😏) and one of my friends was wearing skinny jeans. There is no denying that she looked lovely and really far more glamorous than me if I'm being honest, but I did think that skinnies are quite ageing kow.

Lanique · 17/04/2021 21:57

Sorry - pressed send too soon, that sounded horrible. Outdated more than ageing.

But each to their own. I haven't got rid of mine yet. They serve a very useful purpose in winter for tucking into wellies.

The90swereadecadeago · 17/04/2021 23:17

High waist prevents muffin top and means I’m not worried about flashing my knickers to strangers when I sit down 😆

coogee · 18/04/2021 10:27

High waist prevents muffin top

Ah, but low waist makes it more obvious so you do something about it.

Rainbunny · 18/04/2021 11:44

That's what is so annoying about clothing trends. A look that is really flattering goes out of style just because the fashion industry needs to keep selling clothes that we probably don't need.

I've decided that skinny jeans flatter me more than flares/wide leg jeans right now so I declare them to be a fahion classic and therefore never out of style. I rather look my best in clothes that aren't super hot and trendy than look bad in unflattering trendy clothes.

Nighthogs · 18/04/2021 11:47

Just an update guys - off to Bluewater and proudly rocking my skinnies! Grin

Exactly, mine are never super skinny anyway
MrsVeryTired · 18/04/2021 12:29

Went to our nearest city a few days ago, the non-skinny jean look was very popular, spotted lots of flares, bootcuts, wide legs on all the young uns.

Might creep out to the town and countryside areas eventually, skinnies and leggings still very popular here.

The90swereadecadeago · 18/04/2021 13:17

I just popped into town and at least 10 teenage girls had flares on. Not straight leg, Mum jeans or boot cuts. Proper flares, light blue/acid wash floor length flares and I have to say, I don’t like them, they just look old fashioned to me!

I realised it’s because I wore boot cuts and flares as a teen and so I associate them with being out of date and old (and soaking up the rain and them flapping around my ankles) whereas teens will have grown up seeing skinnies and so see them as ‘old.’
