What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

Not sure whether to be gutted or relieved. Skinny jeans are all I wear. But I’ve recently been desperate to change out of them at the first chance I get. There was me thinking I was getting old but I’m clearly just innately trendy.

AmberItsACertainty · 15/04/2021 22:34

MiMong that YouTube made me laugh

I like all kinds of jeans. Boot cut and flares are my favourite so I'm glad they're back in fashion. I have boobs and hips and for some reason high rise jeans make me look like I have no torso. Skirts that sit on the waist I always order a size up so they sit lower on my hips.

abc4321 · 15/04/2021 22:38

In Costa yesterday I saw a teenage boy in baggy jeans with massive coloured pockets all over them (imagine Timmy Mallet in the 80s).

But worn back to front (so the button and flies at the back)...is this a thing? It all looked rather uncomfortable

CovidCorvid · 15/04/2021 22:39
@gottenhaitch What's wrong with a side parting? Good lord, what have I missed?!
You need to get on TikTok...full of videos of millennials or poss Gen Z (?) harping on about unfashionable older people with side partings and skinny jeans.

I’ve had an unfashionable centre parting for 40 years and suddenly I’m trendy! 😂

FontSnob · 15/04/2021 22:43

I loved a boot cut back in the day and will defo wear them again if I can find any to squeeze my ass in. I do find it hilarious/feel old that the ‘90’s are back in fashion though, I’ve always thought it was a shit decade for clothes.

sadpenguin16 · 15/04/2021 22:53

Isn’t it funny how mums are wearing skinny jeans and gen Z are now wearing mom jeans (generalising here)?! I’m a new mum of 2 and nowhere near ready to wear the most unflattering pair of jeans out there with a cropped top or top tucked in so all can see my baby belly twice over! I’ll keep my high waisted skinnies with loose stripey top thank you! Hell! I might even throw my ugg boots back in, mix it up a bit 🤣

cakewench · 15/04/2021 22:59

I’m aware of the trend (and think it looks great on younger folks) but I’m not interested Grin Lockdown converted me fully to leggings/jeggings and loose fitting tops/jumpers/dresses. Fuck having to button and or zip anything.

I’m mid-40s, tbh I realised years ago to just stick to items that flatter me and don’t worry too much about what looks amazing on slim 20 year olds.

The90swereadecadeago · 15/04/2021 23:03

Gen Z never had to cope with wet boot/wide leg jeans slapping across their ankles 🤣 I think if they want the 90s look maybe they should go the whole way and pluck those fluffy brows into oblivion too 😆

Seriously though trend led fashion is just cyclic, when something is done to death it flips back the other way. Just wear what you like 😉

nevernotstruggling · 15/04/2021 23:10

I'm sticking to skinny jeans. Mum jeans and all that look shit. We wore Tham back along because that's all there was. The 2000's hipster boot cut were passable at best.

What's next then? Ski pants?

Time2b33 · 15/04/2021 23:12

@Diva66

Lockdown. Nobody fitting into any skinny jeans 😂
This 😂
saffysue · 15/04/2021 23:36

@Littlepickle21

Also clinging on to my side parting (AND a sweeping fringe...) I know the centre parting is the thing now but I.just.can't. Im just going to wait here til 2010 has its day in fashion again, and when it does, I will be ready.
This made me laugh out loud!

I am loving this thread, I have found my people.

FourTurnings · 15/04/2021 23:41

nevernotstruggling ski pants? I hope so! 🤣

helpIhateclothesshopping · 16/04/2021 00:06

I only realised they were out the other day when someone on TV mentioned "so last year, like skinny jeans". I guessed flares must be in by the teenager I saw in town today in a lilac top and lilac tartan flares. Reminded me of the Bay City rollers gone pastel! (Not that I am quite old enough, or cool enough, to remember them myself), they were too in your face to wear if they weren't in fashion. Not sure what I'm going to wear, I've been living in jeggings or jogging bottoms mainly.

alwayslearningsomethingnew · 16/04/2021 00:16

Who cares really? Just wear what you want fgs

GlomOfNit · 16/04/2021 00:20

Y'know, I do find it quaint that grown women actually give a shit about what someone substantially younger thinks they should or shouldn't wear. Grin Fuck this, I'm 47 and if I can still fit into them, I shall continue wearing my skinnies, my straightlegs and most of all, my FUCKYOUIWEARWHATIWANT

Seriously? Most of us here have pushed babies out of our vaginas (other methods are available) and are therefore warriors - why on earth should we give a monkey's what other people think of our attire? I honestly, genuinely don't get it.

Mom jeans really are grim.

I am very pleased to see the back of skinnies for reasons already given, but mom jeans will not be making their way into my wardrobe.

Unless you are an actual 6 ft model with a concave stomach, they make everyone who wears them look like they have a substantial pot belly.

Earthakitty · 16/04/2021 06:40

Skinny jeans ONLY look great on tall ultra slim women with good legs.
I could wear them 2 years ago pre lockdown but now I've piled it on and am so thankful they're out.
Flares are great. Flares, NOT mum/boyfriend jeans which do nothing for anyone unless you're 5'10 and 8 stone.
Flares or bell bottoms are much more forgiving and hide a multitude of sins.
If you're big round the hips flares/bootcuts balance you out. Skinny jeans make you look enormous.
Long live flares !

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 16/04/2021 07:09

I am surprised how angy some of you are

Shouting I DONT GIVE A FUCK shows you are actually rattled (why?)

Since clothes are so cheap, young people are able to be more fashion forward

Us oldies can decide if we like the new styles or not

Me, I like it when fashion changes as I get bored with my looks, am not very creative, so seeing what’s new and what bits of the new styles suit me is fun.

I think it’s interesting that fashion is getting baggier and less “flattering” and reckon it may have to do with huge influence of Billie Eilish and maybe the “Me too” movement?

I will keep some of my skinnies but am bored with them too, and embracing a few boyfriend style and wide leg style ones now mixes things up a bit. Mom jeans look awful on me so leaving those well alone

But why get angry?

The90swereadecadeago · 16/04/2021 07:56

If does make me laugh that according to Gen Z, millennial skinny jeans and side parts are now considered old, yet flares and middle parts are generally what Boomers wore in the 60s... 😆

Singsomethingsimple · 16/04/2021 08:00

I think the moment that I learned to dress for my body shape rather than fashion was somewhere in the mid 90's. I'm short and curvy and spent my teens and early twenties looking heavier than I actually was. Boxy, baggy clothes do nothing for me and I rarely wore jeans in those days. Nor do spaghetti straps. Wear what you want.

Frauhubert · 16/04/2021 08:13

I am so sad too that skinny jeans are out of fashion. I LOVE skinny jeans but feel old wearing them. I literally feel the eyes of the Gen Z on me laughing. I have slim legs so skinny jeans looked great on me. And you could wear them EVERYWHERE! Work, coffee, walk, fancy dinner- they could be styled up or down. How am i supposed to look sexy in those awful baggy jeans and a t-shirt. Or is being sexy out of fashion too?

The90swereadecadeago · 16/04/2021 08:15

@Frauhubert Do you know what skinny jeans can do though? They can buy your own wine 😉

Frauhubert · 16/04/2021 08:18

The question is- how will i wear knee high boots next winter? Are they out of fashion too? Or am i allowed to wear them with tights and a skirt?
Are leggings out of fashion? Since they have the skinny shape.
So many questions, and i don’t know any snotty gen z brats to ask

Well you’re in luck because apparently Uggs are coming back!

I don’t think I can cope with wide leg jeans. The last time I wore them was to Reading Festival and they got filthy and torn.
