AIBU to be annoyed by message about washing my car

Neighbour has sent me a (second) message asking us when we’re going to wash our car. We ignored the first message.

It’s not muddy or dirty. The alloys are still silver. It’s just dusty because car washes have been closed for months. They’re good neighbours otherwise. AIBU to be irritated and to think I can decide when I want to wash my own car that’s doing nothing to them except sitting outside on the public road (and it’s not parked in front of their house, it’s parked in front of ours).

@dontbeme Omg, that's too funny. That will be my favourite goto response forever now!

Bertiebiscuit · 14/04/2021 19:59

Oh dear - you have the classic nosey nutters with no life neighbours - bad luck - probably best ignored you can't reason with no marks like this

VicarofDibley · 14/04/2021 20:00

Cheeky beggars , that is some hide. Well they would hate mine as it is black and currently muddy as my main routes are narrow muddy country lanes .I work full time washing my car comes low on my list .

Cazck · 14/04/2021 20:02

It's not 1st april is it? Because it couldn't have be serious!!

silverspider05 · 14/04/2021 20:08

Write a note back saying 'thank you for being a dear and volunteering to clean my car, I will park it outside your house for you so it's easier'. Proceed to park said car directly outside their house. They won't ask you to do anything ever again.

Beetrux · 14/04/2021 20:14

Tell them the waste of water would be against your environmental principles!!

Meinmytree · 14/04/2021 20:27

Take it through the carwash. Then invoice them for the cost of the car wash (plus petrol, of course, to get there and back)

Or clean it inside, as then you can legitimately tell them you've cleaned it.

VerbenaGirl · 14/04/2021 20:31

They are bonkers!

Livingonadream · 14/04/2021 20:39

I'd have to every day I was home, take a bucket, sponge and the hoover and leave it by the side of my car all day then put it back again without using them obviously! It will drive them mad thinking this is the day you are finally going to do it Grin

Tomasinabombadil · 14/04/2021 20:46

They wouldn’t like me living next door then. My car is quite clean at the moment, not due for a proper wash yet.🤣

Sorry neighbour, it's booked on on 31st April for a full valet job.

SionnachGlic · 14/04/2021 20:53

Totally none of their business... have they not got better things to worry about? Tell them the rain will take care of it....

Timetohaveacuppa · 14/04/2021 21:04

Ask them when they are willing to wash it.

Augustmummy · 14/04/2021 21:06

Write back to them and ask them for an approximate date as to when they are going to mind their own bloody business.

I had two of those Jeeps...... so one could be washed and valeted whilst I drove the other
Toomuchtrouble4me · 14/04/2021 21:24

@ElizabethTudor

Write in the dust on said car : NEVER :-)
GrinGrinGrin Please do this!
aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 14/04/2021 21:31

I would ignore or tell him to do it.

My neighbour texted me last lockdown and asked if I would kindly remove the rubbish from my garden amidst decorating, renovating and having a new heating system put in (wood, scrap, old boiler & radiators etc), as she wanted to sell her house and potential buyers were complaining about MY house. I told her to come back when they wanted to buy MY house and to tell them to mind their own business or she could take it for me as it bothered her so much. She never asked again. The tip was closed for a while and I couldn't justify multiple trips with small amounts rather than a small few trips with a fuller car 😒. Some neighbours can't help themselves but become involved in other peoples business 🤷‍♀️

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 14/04/2021 21:35

They'd hate my car, it's absolutely scruffy. My first car was washed fortnightly as I had such pride in it, this one has been washed properly once, possibly twice in 3yrs 🤣🤣. I'm scared to wash it in case the paint falls off it. It was a blue car but currently white from salt on the roads haha.

thenovice · 14/04/2021 21:36

Ignore it.

Harmonypuss · 14/04/2021 21:36

Hophopandaway
...having a dirty car is like wearing unpolished shoes just not great standards and for a lot of people they will judge people for it.
Judge away...
My car has been washed twice in 3 years
I've not cleaned a pair of shoes in over 20yrs (with exception of a damp cloth to remove a bit of mud after walking the dog)
Not cleaned windows in a decade
I don't own an iron
I vacuum once a month
I only shovel the dog muck in my garden maybe one a fortnight
The thing is, at the end of the day, what I do with my home, car, life etc is my business and if anyone doesn't like what I do they can jog on because I'm not poking my nose into their business!

memberofthewedding · 14/04/2021 21:39

Why have your neighbours even got your phone number? For the most part mine dont even know my name. I would not message back. If she sees you and refers to it you could say "Oh I assumed such a cheeky remark was a joke!"

Im a great believer in keeping neighbours at their distance and in their place.

My next door neighbours are CF. However I only have one lot because I am on the end.

Shortly after I moved in the following conversation took place:-

Neighbour: whats your name?
Me: Jane
Neighbour: whats your second name?
Me: Bloggs
Neighbour: is that Miss or Mrs?
Me: well suppose you tell me your name before I answer any more questions!
Silence.
Me: its neither Miss nor Mrs. Its Dr. And my first name is for my friends. You may call me Dr Bloggs.

That more or less set the tone for our relationship since.

I looked them up on the land registry and not only do I know their name but when they moved in, how much their mortgage was for, their mortgage provider and a lot more besides.

VouisLuitton · 14/04/2021 21:56

@cjpark

You dont live in my street do you? My nutty neighbours have his and hers matching 'silent witness stylee' boiler suits which they adorn every Saturday at 9am to do a full outside and inside valet of their 3 cars.
We have similar next time us... three cars cleaned at LEAST once per week. Mine gets done maybe once per year Confused
Mumtofourandnomore · 14/04/2021 22:01

I think you should wash the car. Then buy a smashed up old ice cream van, with lots of rust and a few dents - maybe jack it up and take the wheels off for good measure (you could add some ‘council aware’ stickers too for decoration). Then wave cheerily and tell them you’ve done the car - and do they like your new summer business venture.......
