AIBU to be annoyed by message about washing my car

Neighbour has sent me a (second) message asking us when we’re going to wash our car. We ignored the first message.

It’s not muddy or dirty. The alloys are still silver. It’s just dusty because car washes have been closed for months. They’re good neighbours otherwise. AIBU to be irritated and to think I can decide when I want to wash my own car that’s doing nothing to them except sitting outside on the public road (and it’s not parked in front of their house, it’s parked in front of ours).

Outrageous! Who does this?!

21summers · 14/04/2021 18:58

@cjpark

You dont live in my street do you? My nutty neighbours have his and hers matching 'silent witness stylee' boiler suits which they adorn every Saturday at 9am to do a full outside and inside valet of their 3 cars.
Hahaha, wow, well to each their own I suppose.

Bet my neighbours wish we’d swop houses with them then!

Seriously ?? They’ve been in lockdown too long !

Harmonypuss · 14/04/2021 19:02

My car is almost 3yrs old, Tigger orange with a white roof and it's only been washed once in all the time I've had it and even then it certainly wasn't me who did it!
I agree with everyone else who's said tell the neighbour they're welcome to do it if it bothers them that much!

Quincie · 14/04/2021 19:04

So all the Boden wearing, kitchen designing MNers have crappy old bangers covered in dust...........

ToniHargis · 14/04/2021 19:04

I'm sorry but that would make me dig my heels in. In fact, I'd probably drive it through a muddy field and leave it there.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 14/04/2021 19:05

@Hollyhead

Lol *@Hophopandaway* the reason people used to do such tedious stuff is because there was fuck all to do in the 80s compared to now. Why wash a car when you could be watching Netflix or out somewhere fun.

You say 'lack of pride' I raise you 'people have their priorities right'.

Our next door neighbour used to wash and wax his very clean car every Sunday, I judged heavily at the waste of resources. Disgusting.

Yes!!! Well.said. FIL washes both cars weekly, it's a criminal waste of water
Miisty · 14/04/2021 19:06

My car is dusty and muddy as I work down a single road used by tractors .I’m not bothered but the inside will also need a good clean out too

As in - leave it parked where it always is
Mittens030869 · 14/04/2021 19:08

**Mrgrinch

"Hi neighbour, I'm not going to wash my car any time soon. You are welcome to wash it if it upsets you so much."**

I’d be very tempted to reply in that way to such a message from a neighbour. Grin

When my old man moved onto the estate they now live on they got a letter from the local neighborhood watch biddy who told them.tbat people on this street wash their cars on Saturday Mornings and mowed their lawns on Saturday always before lunch. I can't remember it all but highlights were BBQs were only expected Friday and Saturday afternoons. Along with a list of window cleaners, milk men and bin washers because they liked to keep all houses with the same people so it was neat. Also mentioned vans should be parked off the estate so not to make it look down market.

Pops not being the sort who enjoyed being told what to do was out every Sunday at 6AM with the petrol lawnmower, never washed his company car, took every opportunity to park a company van on the street and washed his own windows and never had the bins cleaned (the most pointless of pointless wastes of money ever).

The "lady" came to have words several times and on one memorable occasion left with several bags of her cats poo. Pops has never changed. 25yrs have gone by and the estate has much changed for the better with lots of neighbours now friendly and far more relaxed. The lady in question is a reformed character and to her credit admits she was a pompous twit.

PinkPanther27 · 14/04/2021 19:24

😳 Ask them when they're going to have a shower! Cheeky gits! 😂😂

TomRaider · 14/04/2021 19:27

As a side note it always amuses me on my that when one person washes their car or mows the lawn there are usually several others that follow within an hour. It's like it is contagious.

I do derive some strange pleasure from occasionally intentionally putting the "wrong bin" out first at out collection point and seeing how many others put the wrong bin out too before someone checks. Cue much bin shuffling in a morning. Was something I first noticed while having the garden bin out one day while gardening and noticing a few of my neighbours also but their green bin out alongside it.

jam30 · 14/04/2021 19:30

Erm what now?! Even if it was absolutely filthy, how is it anyone else’s business?

jam30 · 14/04/2021 19:31

@TomRaider 🤣🤣🤣

Echobelly · 14/04/2021 19:32

I feel like parking my car by your neighbours just to wind them up. It's dusty, dirty, full of crap and smells like mouldy cheese inside Grin

nannawend · 14/04/2021 19:33

My car hasn’t been washed for over 6 months now. It is a lovely car and I should look after it better BUT I ‘look after’ it how I want to and would not let my neighbours dictate my life style ( ie the things that I used to think were important aren’t any more - such as keeping my car clean in case my neighbours thought I was slovenly). Ignore them. You have more important things in your life than to worry about a dirty conveyance to get you from A go B I should think!!! What saddos they are. Tell them u r Greens and don’t want to waste water....

AnnieSnap · 14/04/2021 19:40

@Hophopandaway

I can see your point and i would say you are not being unreasonable however this just highlights the general lack of care of modern Britain. people have just lost standards, I accept of you are disabled washing the car may be beyond someone however in the 80's I remember everyone washing their car each weekend in my estate and in the 60's when having a car was much rarer the pride in ownership caused them to be washed weekly. And actually get a cheeky smile from "I wish my wife was as dirty as this" scrawled in the mud on the back as a subtle reminder the car probably needs a clean. Really a filthy car is like having a filthy garden, or not showering or brushing ones hair. Also cars that are barely cleaned are often those maintained worse as people pay less attention to them. So no it was a bit much recieving a message however having a dirty car is like wearing unpolished shoes just not great standards and for a lot of people they will judge people for it.
What? I mean WTF? Are you in the right place?
Mummyyyyyyyyyy · 14/04/2021 19:42

How rude!

I'd probably reply 'I have no idea'

& leave it at that.

poppycat10 · 14/04/2021 19:43

@ToniHargis

This.

There is more to life than washing cars or mowing lawns.

poppycat10 · 14/04/2021 19:44

in the 80's I remember everyone washing their car each weekend in my estate

It's not a very eco-friendly thing to do. We've moved on since then. Make sure the windows, mirrors and indicators are clean, but other than that, meh.

Anyway, people have more interesting lives now.

Ditto mowing the lawn. It's better to leave it a few weeks, let the wildflowers grow and make the bees happy.

Mummyyyyyyyyyy · 14/04/2021 19:45

@Dontbeme

Message back "car is clean, maybe your windows are dirty? The other neighbours were all talking about it at the BBQ" leave them to ponder what BBQ, which neighbours and how long you have all been chatting about them.
Love this! 🤣
Thedogscollar · 14/04/2021 19:52

@21summers
I was out in garden today and my elderly neighbour who is really lovely shouted across the fence "I see you found a car wash that was open" honestly I was gob smacked. Thought to myself that it was a bit rude but let it slide as he is such a great help with any garden queries Grin and has been a great neighbour for past 22 years.

Yeah my car was dirty but I'm too busy working nights NHS and catch up on housework during the day to be arsed with washing my car.

FixItUpChappie · 14/04/2021 19:54

Write in the dust on said car : NEVER

^This definitely GrinGrin

CupoTeap · 14/04/2021 19:58

Chuck a bucket of water out an upstairs window, and text back 'Done'
