ok. i have always been an advocate to get back our freedom but sensibly. went out yesterday to a local pub for a couple of hours and couldn't believe it. its a great pub lovely atmosphere and staff and has always been a child/dog friendly pub. no social distancing at all, at one point i was squished on a bench between about 5 people. kids running in and out of the pub messing about etc. i totally get that yesterday was a novelty to many people after being locked down since the beginning of november but i feel this total lack of self control is going to end badly for everyone. did you risk going out at all yesterday? aibu?

I didn’t go out yesterday. I don’t feel at risk personally, but think there is a risk to the population with new variants if everyone mixes in large numbers again. I’m not one to be first in the queue in these situations anyway, I’d like to go to the pub but happy to wait a little longer when the novelty has worn off.

SardineJam · 13/04/2021 05:38

I had no interest going to the pub or shops yesterday (and I was working anyway) but I can understand why people have this attitude. I'm fed up with being locked down and I think people just want to go back to normal. Very interested to see how this reopening will impact the number of positive cases.

hamstersarse · 13/04/2021 05:41

You are going to have to get used to normality again

The past year has been the abnormal, humans interacting and socialising is the normal thing for humans. It’s always going to revert to that for the majority. Because we need it. There may be some still in fear but they will be the minority. Up to them, but they’ll be onto a losing battle to try and stop people interacting in the long term

impostersong · 13/04/2021 05:44

That doesn't surprise me at all, pubs opening is probably one of the least sensible moves. Throw in alcohol and all common sense goes out the window. Although I'm not sure you're in a position to be complaining about it as you were one of the ones out there breaking the rules thereby contributing to the inevitable increase in numbers?! It would be safer and more sensible to open up inside dining with proper social distancing so you can have a drink with a meal. Seating is then organised and regimented.

AppleToot · 13/04/2021 05:44

at one point i was squished on a bench between about 5 people

No one forced you to sit squished between 5 people on a bench. If you were so shocked, why didn't you leave?

You will need to accept normality again at some point and thank God for that I say.

I don't believe we'll go back into lockdown now, no.

SpnBaby1967 · 13/04/2021 05:45

Let me get this straight.

You went to the pub, on the FIRST day they reopened and are now moaning that other people also decided to go to the pub.

If you were squished on a bench and felt it was unsafe why didnt you leave/get up before you were "squished" ?

Anyone would have been able to predict yesterday would be busy!

CupoTeap · 13/04/2021 05:49

The pub has broken the rules, you should have left.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/04/2021 05:57

So why didn't you leave then if it bothered you so much?

MiddleParking · 13/04/2021 06:01

Specifically which of the people at the pub enjoying themselves do you think should have gone home to make it less risky? Not yourself, clearly.

phoenixrosehere · 13/04/2021 06:07

YABVU

You chose to go to a pub the first day restrictions were loosened and then decided to stay there when you saw little to no SD. No one forced you to go out or stay at the pub when you observed these things so your “concern” doesn’t exactly match your actions.

I would have waited until the kids were back in school and a few more weeks but saying that I don’t have this dying urge to rush out because restrictions have lessened anyway.

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 06:10

Why were the kids running in and out of the pub when they're only open for outdoor service?

firthy85 · 13/04/2021 06:10

um how was i breaking the rules when they were given permition to open? there is nothing i would love more than total normality us all mingling and having fun and i was maybe first in the queue for that simple reason that we do have to start getting back to normality. but whilst we still have some guidelines to follow,we need to follow them. as for moving i couldn't move because there was nowhere to move to it was packed out i was lucky to get the table i got. i wasn't moaning as such just taking the longer term view that if we carry on the same path as yesterday the normality we are all craving will be lost

lol serious question? of course the pub had to be open on the inside for the toilets

It was always going to be like this on the first day back. I like to think they took this into account when they did their modelling. I know they said after schools opening they expected cases to rise/not fall as fast.

Hopefully after a week or two things will calm down a bit. In the meantime take some personal responsibility and if you are squished on a bench of 5 go home.

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 06:15

Yes it was a serious question. Why were they being allowed to run in and out and mess about and why didn't you leave or question why things were so poorly handled?

KoalaOok · 13/04/2021 06:16

as for moving i couldn't move because there was nowhere to move to yes you could have gone home if it concerned you. It's up to you to decide if the risk of finishing your pint/meal outweighs the risk of contracting covid19.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/04/2021 06:19

did you risk going out at all yesterday wtf has happened to this country when these are serious questions
I think it’s absolutely fine to open everything up and venture out, if you personally are at risk stay home, it’s enough now for the greater population

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 06:20

Were you on the table before the squishers arrived?

MiddleParking · 13/04/2021 06:21

as for moving i couldn't move because there was nowhere to move to it was packed out i was lucky to get the table i got.

Grin people meant ‘why didn’t you leave altogether’. Mad idea, isn’t it.

How can you speak for the vast majority of the population?
TheWaif · 13/04/2021 06:25

All the pubs near me are only doing table bookings. Did you not have to book? How did you end up squashed?

Goawayquickly · 13/04/2021 06:25

Do you mean people you didn't know came and sat at your table?

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 06:27

the greater population - sorry.

I didn't want to to go to a pub and risk this kind of lack of distancing yesterday. No one I know did either.

I may do so when things settle down a bit. If the OP felt the atmosphere was unsafe he should have challenged it or left

impostersong · 13/04/2021 06:28

You had responsibility to remain 2m away from anyone not in your bubble so you broke the rules by being squished on a bench with 5 others, presumably not in your household / support bubble. A standard bench for 6 should be for a bubble group only, in which case you're fine being squished. Pub will have provided that seating with the expectation people wouldn't be idiots and squish on them with people outside of their bubble!

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 06:29

Exactly. I don't see why he put up with people invading his space and kids running in and out without doing something about it.
