ok. i have always been an advocate to get back our freedom but sensibly. went out yesterday to a local pub for a couple of hours and couldn't believe it. its a great pub lovely atmosphere and staff and has always been a child/dog friendly pub. no social distancing at all, at one point i was squished on a bench between about 5 people. kids running in and out of the pub messing about etc. i totally get that yesterday was a novelty to many people after being locked down since the beginning of november but i feel this total lack of self control is going to end badly for everyone. did you risk going out at all yesterday? aibu?

We’re not going to be locked down again when the majority of the British population will be vaccinated by June.

It’s over.

MizMoonshine · 13/04/2021 08:20

I'm quite content with my new way of life, to be honest. I'm happy to go for walks rather than to the pub. I'm happy to have a takeaway rather than go out to eat. I'm much happier buying online than I was ever going in store. So I didn't venture out yesterday (anywhere non essential) but I did b enjoy my walk route being significantly less full and Morrisons being practically empty.
But you're right. It won't last. People taking a mile are going to have us locked up again in no time.

MsTSwift · 13/04/2021 08:22

We are at 12 per 100k in our area there are 4 people with Covid in our local hospital

skirk64 · 13/04/2021 08:22

People in general are too short-sighted or selfish to connect their individual behaviours with larger-scale outcomes. We saw this during the previous relaxings of the rules, which led to an increase in cases, and we will continue to see it now.

The difference this time is the vaccine which will hopefully keep fatalities to a lower level. The real problem will come when the next "big" variant hits, the one that gets around the existing vaccines and is more deadly, perhaps (hopefully?) in all age groups. ("Hopefully?" because if a variant produces high death rates in the under-30s I think people will take it more seriously.)

People are making the mistake of celebrating and going a little wild because it's finally over. It's not, not by a long shot. The worst may well be still to come.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/04/2021 08:22

Well you were part of this so it’s on you too if we get more lockdowns. Anyway evident of outdoors transmission is tiny.

Sirzy · 13/04/2021 08:25

Yes people who sit squashed up with 5 people that aren’t part of their household will potentially contribute to a rise in cases.

It comes down to the issue of people expecting others to take responsibility without taking any themselves

CoffeeWithCheese · 13/04/2021 08:29

Went to pub on first day it reopened... wonders why other people had exactly the same idea... horrified other people are in pub.

Yawn

GiveMeNovocain · 13/04/2021 08:29

So you went out and had a perfectly lovely time but want the rest of us to stay at home? That's not how life works. If you're worried then stay home. I'm making the most of life.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/04/2021 08:29

I am in Wales so our pubs aren't open yet. I think our government has taken a more sensible approach of staggering reopening and seeing how it goes with schools and shops first.
People can be really stupid - things are getting better but we all have a responsibility to be a bit careful and not just jump back into 'normal' if we want to avoid the figure rising. Pubs ought to be doing booking systems imo.

thebillyotea · 13/04/2021 08:29

People have been meeting in large groups for weeks, if not months.
It doesn't seem to have had much impact, so I think we should be ok until winter.

I fully expect another lockdown then. I don't want it, but I am sure it will happen. I think we are safe enough for now though.

MsTSwift · 13/04/2021 08:30

Reminds me of my mother in law complaining about immigrants (she is an immigrant herself 😁)

You know you can have a life but still follow the rules? The problem is people who have decided to ignore all restrictions and pretend everything is back to normal.

If it was, we could just hop on a plane and go on holiday, but we can't..

Livelovebehappy · 13/04/2021 08:32

I get why people want to get back to normality, but people also have to look at the bigger picture. I’ve got long covid - had it mild but suffering long term after affects. Extreme fatigue, still can’t taste or smell months later. Others who didn’t show any side affects initially are now suffering them months later. Further scientific studies show that the virus attacks the brain, and sufferers may start to display side affects of this year’s later. I think people are blinkered and think you get it and are either hospitalised or that you get over it and continue normal life. I can see in years to come that there is going to be a bigger fallout on the back of covid that we are as yet unaware of.

why?

There was no rule banning you from pubs

but there were still restrictions applying to the outings. It's a bit of a stretch to pretend anyone going for a meal didn't respect any guideline?

islockdownoveryet · 13/04/2021 08:33

I honestly don’t think we will be locked down again. The government are trying to do it safely with only relaxing when the majority have had the first vaccine and only hospitality outside. The only way we will be locked down again is if the vaccine doesn’t work . Yes Covid is still out there and yes be careful as you can still catch it but those that catch it won’t hopefully get seriously ill and that was the point stopping the nhs getting overwhelmed. That’s my opinion anyway I think we should get out there but safely and take care , keep up with masks and social distancing. To say it’s over is reckless.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 13/04/2021 08:34

Yes people’s attitudes and actions like yours are probably going to contribute to more lockdowns.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 13/04/2021 08:35

@SpnBaby1967

Let me get this straight.

You went to the pub, on the FIRST day they reopened and are now moaning that other people also decided to go to the pub.

If you were squished on a bench and felt it was unsafe why didnt you leave/get up before you were "squished" ?

Anyone would have been able to predict yesterday would be busy!

This.

@firthy85 You were one of the people you are moaning about, can you not see that! If you don't want to sit on a bench with others don't....were you forced to....don't moan on MN after you fail to be an adult and make decisions that you are happy with. I imagine there will another on your 'squished bench' moaning about you squishing them Hmm

MrsTophamHat · 13/04/2021 08:35

At what point though do we decide this is over, or are you of the opinion that our way of life has ended and staying at home is what we do now.

You're talking about things that have not yet happened; variants that have not yet been observed. How long do we wait for these to materialise?

Kissthepastrychef · 13/04/2021 08:36

The worst may well be still to come.

Oooooh yes, definitely don't let it be over ! What will all the doom-mongers be able to wring their hands over if it's over ?

kungfupannda · 13/04/2021 08:36

So you were doing exactly what everyone else was doing - enjoying yourself in a non socially distanced situation?

I don't understand why so many people think that the burden is on everyone else to keep the numbers down, and not them. I know someone who is constantly complaining on social media about people going out, people meeting up, people travelling to the beach, people walking in her area etc etc. Usually these posts come a matter of hours after she has posted about going out, meeting up with people, travelling to the beach, walking in another area. Once there was less than an hour between her complaining about people doing something and her own post stating she was planning on doing that exact thing.

There seems to be a really odd disconnect between people's view of their own behaviour and their view of other people's behaviour.

MarshaBradyo · 13/04/2021 08:38

We had posters going to parks and complaining they were busy

Now we get op in a pub

Why do people as op not recognise they are another body in the mix too

RaspberryCoulis · 13/04/2021 08:38

I'm so bored with the "I went to X location and it was busy" thread. We've had it on repeat for a year.

Rukaya · 13/04/2021 08:40

no social distancing at all, at one point i was squished on a bench between about 5 people. kids running in and out of the pub messing about etc

Not other peoples attitudes OP. YOURS. You sat there in a squish of people in a big crowd, against all guidelines. So if it's an issue, you're the cause as much as anyone.

GiveMeNovocain · 13/04/2021 08:43

@thebillyotea as outside asymptomatic transmission is insanely rare and I've been vaccinated I reckon I'm able to make my own risk assessments but I think it's a bit of a leap to assume I'm hopping illegally on a plane. I'm actually staying UK based all year but that's my preference. Nothing to do with Covid.

NewAgain123 · 13/04/2021 08:45

So Op, you went out the first day of lockdown release, you enjoyed your day, but now you're worried that other people who might be having too much fun, will force us into another lockdown, got it!!
