I know somebody who is putting their 3.7 yr old to bed at 6pm. Child is waking at 5am. I'm not surprised as my own ds went to bed around 6.45 at almost 4. Aibu to think this is a very early bedtime and the likely cause of the early waking?

I live abroad where children aged 3 go to bed between 9-10, get up around 8, and nap after lunch if needed.

Oh shush no one says my child is 3.7 years old meaning 3.84 months. Hmm
Haha I was thinking that's an odd way of displaying age. As if counting is a bizarre concept haha. Was I the only one that used a calculator to work out what 3.7 years is?

I googled it 😆

Our 3.8(?)y.o goes to bed at 7 every evening and wakes about 0630,but I'm an early bird too so suits me. I usually go up to bed about 9pm.
To each their own.

I thinkmit is quite early, and not surprising the child is up at 5.

My 2 DC had a bedtime if 7.30 at that age. Tricky for it yo be any earlier because of my work. They git up at 6 30/7.

TiggerTiggerBounce · 12/04/2021 11:52

YANBU. I have a few friends who put their kids to bed early as, apparently, they always got up at the same time no matter what time they went to bed. Apart from when the clocks changed of course, which was somehow different!!!

Pumperthepumper · 12/04/2021 11:52

@KoalaOok

Some people have brains that are wired to see 3.7 years as different to a 3 year and 7 month year old.
Yes, but it’s the difference between 3 yrs and 7 months and 3 years and 8.4 months so who cares? What possible difference does it make?
MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2021 11:52

That’s very early here but I know we do a later sleep and wake up

About as much difference as 45 minutes at 6pm which is why I think people responded in the way they did on this thread.

Jumpers268 · 12/04/2021 11:57

Oh the 1.4 months makes absolutely no difference, but I thought it was an odd way to display age and it did make me chuckle (but it doesn't take a lot for me haha).

SeaTurtles92 · 12/04/2021 11:58

Your OP didn't really sound like you were asking for help. More like you were saying it's far too early and don't we agree.

Agree it's not really any of your business though. 6pm - 5am is not a bad stretch.

I think there is a combination of habit and body clock preferences. My nephew has always been an early riser. Even with teenage changes his lie-ins aren’t that epic and he goes to bed relatively early. His sister has always been an owl and she is still buzzing late at night abs has always needed to be dragged out of bed. My eldest is definitely an owl. We’ve never had 5am wake-ups with her and it takes her a long time to go to bed. My youngest is more towards a lark but she’s only 2 so could still change. She’s generally up between 6 and 7 but has had phases of 5am wake-ups. I don’t tolerate them well though so have always essentially ignored her and sat in the dark. I think if you start getting up for the day and doing fun things at 5am it becomes a habit.

I would hope most people, since 3.7 years does not mean 3 years and months. You're supposed to see different things as different.

Member984815 · 12/04/2021 12:11

She should try adding 10-15 minutes on to the time over a couple of weeks so it's not a huge adjustment . My youngest is 10 now but she definitely wouldn't have gone to bed that early at that age but she did like a nap in the afternoon after montessori if she was tired.

I knew what 3.7 means. I think most of us have done enough home schooling over the last year to have been refreshed on decimals, however I also knew it was unlikely that's what the OP actually meant! Sometimes some critical thinking needs to be involved.

As I said before there's a difference in advice for babies at 4 and at 5-6 months so clearly a month and a bit can make a difference to some people. Sleep regression and all that.

That’s because there’s massive leaps in development when they’re months old. There’s much less difference between a 3yr 7 month old and a 3yr 8.4 month old.
