At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

a man of the people? Who exactly/

youshallnotpass9 · 09/04/2021 19:54

That is our national broadcaster and this is a significant national event

Exactly its out national broadcaster and some of the nation don't give a shit, one channel fine, but its the same on all the BBC channels.

Anything I do want to watch is not suitable to watch with small children, so I am stuck in limbo

daisyjgrey · 09/04/2021 19:54

@WhoWants2Know

Megan went on Oprah and that's all anyone heard about for a week. So, yeah, I expect that this will carry on for a while, by the time the funeral, etc. are finished.

Careful, reach much further and you'll fall off that horse.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 09/04/2021 19:55

He was married to The Queen - of course it is going to dominate the TV!

ImAlrightThanx · 09/04/2021 19:56

I'm not 100% which vote means what, but I agree with you, OP!

wonderstuff · 09/04/2021 19:57

LBC saying that the government won't be doing briefings or announcements for 8 days. Seems excessive to shutdown the government for more than a week.

OP I too am disappointed that HoG isn't on.

I feel terribly sorry for the queen but I don't want to be subjected to wall to wall coverage of his death.

Nanny0gg · 09/04/2021 19:57

@TrickorTreacle

I can understand the non-stop reporting when Princess Diana died, but not with the Duke.

He was no Princess Diana tbh.

No.

She didn't serve with distinction in a war. She wasn't a steadfast consort for 70+ years (yes I know hers wasn't a love match)
And she aired her dirty laundry on TV.

So no, not much comparison really.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/04/2021 19:58

I'm with you. I heard the news flash announcement on Radio X. That's supposed to be a radio station for people into their indie music (even though they might be of a certain age ahem!), it's not Radio 2 territory.

Fine to break the schedule to announce it and give a breakdown of his life. Fine to play the national anthem. Fine to play some sombre music for the next hour.

But.....I've now heard the national anthem TWICE. They keep doing news bulletins JUST about this (people have smartphones and will already know about it and if they're interested they will have read more details). I have heard Imagine by John Lennon TWICE. Numerous Coldplay songs. Grin

I had to go somewhere in the car and so I chose to switch to the local radio station which plays crappy chart dancey stuff. And THEY were all sombre and playing sad music.

I mean, yes, it's sad, but it's not unexpected. I didn't mind the breakdown of his life etc but it's the constant repetition. It's like when you applaud someone in respect at a function. No-one wants to be the first to stop.

Please, just stop. We've been respectful. We don't all need to wear black and have a day of mourning.

It has just made me dread the day the queen dies, to be honest. The maudlin outpourings all over the media.....

AlexaShutUp · 09/04/2021 19:58

I voted yabu, because it was entirely predictable that we would have wall to wall coverage of this, and yabu to be amazed about it.

However, yanbu to find it excessive and a bit dull.

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 09/04/2021 19:58

Well well well. He finally let go.

RIP Phil.

LindainLockdown · 09/04/2021 19:58

Friday is the one day of the week (in lockdown times) where there is quite a lot of TV I enjoy watching in the evening, so it is unlucky (for me) this has happened on a Friday, and as others have said I doubt Prince Philip or any other of the royals (except truly self-important ones like Andrew) would want this amount of OTT coverage either.

However as the BBC is making it so easy to register a complaint, perhaps doing so will make the situation when the Queen dies not so ridiculous as it is today (probably totally kidding myself there!)

Oblomov21 · 09/04/2021 19:59

Fuck off. I've heard it now. I don't need to hear it again and again.

Nighthogs · 09/04/2021 19:59

Just gutted the Masterchef final is postponed tbh

Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death
ImAlrightThanx · 09/04/2021 19:59

@UnderHisAye

I don't give a single fuck that he died and I'm already hugely bored of the false sentiment.

I dread the Queen dying for similarly selfish reasons.

Exactly. I feel sorry for his family- despite him reaching a good age, it's still horrible for those who knew him well. The competitive grievers in the general public can fuck all the way off.
Marchitectmummy · 09/04/2021 20:00

It's a significant death of a significant Royal, who lived a long and interesting life what do you really expect.

The repetition will be aimed at people like our family who do not watch TV for more than an hour a day. How much TV do you watch per day, sorry but whatever is on there would be dull in comparison to all thd other things life offers even in Covid times

MaudesMum · 09/04/2021 20:00

Interestingly, when Monty Don tweeted earlier that Gardeners World wasn't on this evening I'd say that 70%-80% of the replies weren't happy.
about that. And the GW audience is hardly radical, so I do wonder if the BBC have pitched this a bit wrong.

SophieB100 · 09/04/2021 20:01

Mother of God give me strength.
If they cancel Line of Duty on Sunday, I will not be responsible for my actions. They have to follow the schedule to the letter. To. The. Letter!
We have bent coppers to catch fellas!
As you were Wink

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 09/04/2021 20:01

@DareIask

I agree. Devote the whole of one of your channels to it, but bbc1 & 2?

Too much

Yes, because it's not like there are a gazillions other channels or a myriad of other online viewing option.

Or radical, I know, turn the TV Off?!

Tupperwarelid · 09/04/2021 20:01

At least the final of The Circle is still on (I hope)!

midsomermurderess · 09/04/2021 20:01

Ah, Doc Martin is on now on ITV 3. The perfect corrective.

Jumpers268 · 09/04/2021 20:02

@CurlyhairedAssassin so much Coldplay. And Whitney Houston. So so much.

LIZS · 09/04/2021 20:02

Even CNN have dropped coverage of the George Floyd trial. Does seem somewhat disproportionate.

RedcurrantPuff · 09/04/2021 20:02

YANBU, there’s no need for the same bloody programme on solidly on each BBC channel ffs. They should have it on BBC1 and move the BBC1 schedule to BBC2. I was looking forward to the MC final!

GabsAlot · 09/04/2021 20:05

my dh just said he read theyve cleared the schedules for tomorrow aswell

i think thats too much tbh

Nat6999 · 09/04/2021 20:07

This afternoon on Drama channel there weren't any adverts, just the UKTV symbol & some awful music but it went back to normal about 4.30pm. I was thinking the darts would be cancelled but it's on as normal. I bet a lot of the TV newscaster have had to go rooting for their black outfits.
