At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

It's said it had to be shot because it was injured

Not true - Philip, was very much wedded to his gun and the visit was specifically for him to kill a tiger:

Biographer Robert added how there was also a backlash from the British media because of the buffalo used as bait. Never mind the crocodile and six mountain sheep he also gunned down during his visit
.

And as if to demonstrate just how important guns were over life,

He was resolutely pro-shooting and pro-gun ownership. In 1996, amid calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shootings, he caused controversy when he said: “If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?”

Wasn’t “ gunning things down”. Like most who shoot he was very involved with the countryside and animal conservation. The World Wildlife Fund was set up by those that shoot and the Duke was involved with setting up the British arm of the charity.

Hence them all posing with it.

StoneofDestiny · 11/04/2021 20:37

At long last the BBC website has posted the 'gaffs', as the media keep calling them, that he made under the 'Philip, In his own words' summary.

Can you imagine the outcry if MM had said any of these things when she met people.

StoneofDestiny · 11/04/2021 20:44

Prince Philip had gone ahead with the hunt, despite protests from British and Indian politicians. He also defended his decision to shoot a tiger following the incident, and this caused even more ourage

In his book “Queen of the World,” royal author Robert Hardman detailed the incident.

“The Maharajah was very clear about the main purpose of the visit: The Duke of Edinburgh was going to shoot a tiger. At the very moment the Duke was in the process of establishing the World Wildlife Fund, which would be founded four months later,” he wrote

Yes - he helped set up the WWF, but people shouldn't perpetrate the myth that 'the tiger was injured' or it was some sort of conservation activity. It was not, it was a 3 day hunt with one intention - to kill a tiger.

Three days on and Radio 3 is still turned into Classic FM.

I’m waiting to see when Simon Bates turns up.

This thread is breaking me

No one is forcing you to tell people whose parents were both killed that they think bereavement is just a game, solely because they aren't devastated by the death of a nearly 100 year old total stranger, derxa

I wonder if there's a link between fixation with/projection onto royals, and lack of empathy. There certainly appears to be.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 13/04/2021 23:52

And now the BBC's dedicated complaints page for this has been taken down. I wonder what prompted that....did the complaints suddenly tail off or are they just alarmed by the publicity?

The BBC was foolish to put up a special web page for people to complain about coverage of Prince Philip’s death. Most would probably not have bothered otherwise. It’s now become the most-complained-about issue ever on the BBC. How that must have hurt his widow, who — whatever you think of the monarchy — has dedicated her life to this country. What a slap in the face.

flyingtartar · 14/04/2021 07:13

I haven't read the whole thread but I bloody well hope all these people are also complaining about the lack of reporting off the shit show that Brexit has turned into and the fact that our PM is regularly caught out lying in the HoC - I never see that on the news. The coverage of PP's death was a bit ott but if people think that is the main problem with the media in this country they are sadly deluded. Still - bread and circuses. If the BBC get a public slap on the wrist after this we can all feel like we have struck a blow for democracy can't we? Hmm

flyingtartar · 14/04/2021 07:17

Waah - I got it down beautifully. Then read through this morning and realised that I needed to add some info to the box above - I had omitted a significant achievement that belonged there. As a result, the supporting statement, that I had got onto 2 pages, is now spread across 3 again. FFS. It's because the box above going a bit bigger moved the supporting statement box further down the next page - there's no way to move it back up. There's a space at the top of the page but all the editing functions are greyed out. I fucking hate computers!

I'll have to leave it - I'm not cutting more out when I know it does fit on 2!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/04/2021 07:23

Que?

flyingtartar · 14/04/2021 07:25

Sorry - wrong thread!

MimiDaisy11 · 14/04/2021 15:06

The BBC was foolish to put up a special web page for people to complain about coverage of Prince Philip’s death. Most would probably not have bothered otherwise

They were just following their standard way of approaching complaints - well until they took it down. If there's a lot of complaints coming in on a specific issue then they make a link for that issue - presumably it makes it easier for them to deal with the volume.

Also, you had to go to the complaints page to come across it. Do you really think people just popped over to the complaints page when they had nothing to complain about and then saw that link and complained?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 14/04/2021 16:15

BBC news stories about Prince Philip had a 'Report' button, which, if you clicked it, recorded your complaint about the story. There wasn't a similar button inviting praise or other comment!

3CCC · 16/04/2021 15:32

Has anyone else received the email from the BBC thanking them and addressing the complaints

cateycloggs · 17/04/2021 00:32

I have received the answering email. It did not address my complaint that BBC4 and Radio4Extra were completely removed from broadcasting over 1-3 days. Going by responses I have previously heard from the BBC bosses to other complaints, I doubt whether there will be any better answer. I feel now I cannot be bothered and have to accept that less and less of generally broadcast material is going to be of interest to me.

Peregrina · 17/04/2021 10:03

I received an answering email too. I imagine it was the stock answer because it didn't address my points either.

Atalantea · 17/04/2021 11:53

Thank you for registering a complaint.

The passing of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a significant event which generated a lot of interest both nationally and internationally.

We acknowledge your complaint about the level of coverage, particularly in relation to the BBC News Special simultaneously broadcasting on BBC One and Two on Friday 9 April. We do not make such changes to billed schedules without careful consideration.

The decisions made reflect the role the BBC plays as the national broadcaster, during moments of national significance.

We are grateful for your feedback, and we always listen to the response from our audiences.
