At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

Geez - he wasn't Saint Philip

He should be made one.

Inneedoflifeadvice · 09/04/2021 23:08

@StoneofDestiny

I do think that some aspects of his life were very interesting like his relationship with his mother (who after recovering from a breakdown, sheltered Jewish refugees in WW2 and then became an Orthodox nun!)

That's been pretty well documented and available on line - hardly breaking news. Besides, that's his mother, not him.

Yeah true. Well I agree with the general gist of this thread anyway- I've been watching Netflix all night.
Hoolihan · 09/04/2021 23:09

@Keyring that was yesterday! Today the entirety of broadcast news has been devoted to Prince Philip and the govt has announced that there will be no press conferences (inc covid related), TV interviews or briefings during the 'period of mourning'. Absolutely outrageous.

TempsPerdu · 09/04/2021 23:09

Not mourning in the sense of weeping and wailing, but more undertaking quiet reflection

Well my ‘quiet reflection’ today has been about how all this is lunacy and actually maybe I’d prefer a republic after all, so possibly counter-productive!

Inneedoflifeadvice · 09/04/2021 23:10
@Inneedoflifeadvice to be fair, as much as I’m agreeing with the scheduling being bizarre, I can see why they’d have cancelled HIGNFU. It’s not like they could have used his death for laughs, give it a week maybe 😉
Oh dear, that's true! coulda just spoken about the other News though (I think there might be some?! lol).

Have I Got News For You is recorded on Thursday nights.

avamiah · 09/04/2021 23:12

I get what everybody is saying and my mother who is 85 even said the same earlier when the Chase wasn’t on at 5 pm.😳
But he was the Queens husband and had been for 73 years so of course it’s going to be on every channel for at least the first day .

Don’t anybody buy a newspaper in the morning whatever you do

@StoneofDestiny

FFS, Prince Philip devoted over 70 years to public service

He gained over 70:years of luxury living, pampered and preened and over indulged. Even his well published openly racist comments were passed over as 'gaffs', that anybody else 'on duty' would have been sacked for. He had a job for life without the qualifications or character to do it right. He didn't die prematurely or of overwork that's for sure.

Oh poke it will you.

Yes he was born into a privileged family but that’s not his fault any more than you weren’t.
He had his mum with mental taken away from him at 9 and his sister die tragically when he was 16 and got packed off to boarding school in freezing Scotland He didn’t squander his privileges though with a life of drugs or womanising like he could of and many do.
He did a difficult job during the war and did it well.
He stayed happily married despite all the constraints he had to live by.
He’s just died.
It’s a much about the end of an era as anything of a generation that lived stoically through war and change .He deserves better than petty comments from a keyboard warrior.

BustyDusty · 09/04/2021 23:14

You can't cure stupid

Badyboo · 09/04/2021 23:15

The vast majority of the country don't, and you're not compelled to by law should you want to read a different newspaper!

Twintub · 09/04/2021 23:16

If you are going to have a Royal Family then this is part of the ceremony. It’s one day if no TV over 70 years of service. Even if you dont agree with us having a Royal family this is what needs to be done. It’s not much to ask to have one night where you can’t watch shows in the BBC. The other option is abolish the monarchy but that’s another thread.

Yes but peeps on here are FURIOUS with the wall to wall coverage.... read the comments :)

And with that, I'm off to watch a bit more of it!!

Yes I know. I meant broadcast the pre-recorded episode- I realise that is not what I said though!
Twintub · 09/04/2021 23:18

And to be fair a lot of older people will be very upset and want this kind of recognition and they watch the BBC. To them it was the celebrities of their day if you like and it’s the end of an era as someone else said.

Badyboo · 09/04/2021 23:18

OK well where do I apply for my refund Smile

I don’t understand the fury there is still Netflix ! I suppose we won’t mind taking the holiday when the queen dies.

Inneedoflifeadvice · 09/04/2021 23:20

FWIW I still think it's sad that he's passed away and can understand @Thewinterofdiscontent's point.

tobee · 09/04/2021 23:21

"Even if you dont agree with us having a Royal family this is what needs to be done."

But people are wondering why?
