Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death

Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

OK well where do I apply for my refund smile

That makes no sense there are shows people don’t like and folk that don’t watch the bbc much at all and they still pay. This is mainly for the older generation like my mum who respect and believe in the RF.

Cynderella · 09/04/2021 23:23

I remember the Diana media coverage, and I think everyone was surprised at just how much there was, and how long it went on. Then the Queen Mother. So, I was expecting this, and we've watched Netflix this evening.

After the Queen, I think the media will adjust.

Twintub · 09/04/2021 23:24

But people are wondering why?

I assume as a mark of respect and for the older generation. I don’t see the big deal and I dont have great feelings for or against the RF.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 23:24

Geez - he wasn't Saint Philip

He should be made one

Whatever drugs you are in are certainly working! You are flying....

WilsonMilson · 09/04/2021 23:25

I’m sad that he died, but no Masterchef?? I’d been looking forward to that all day!

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 23:26

The whole saturation coverage is like something from a communist state - resembling North Korea - force fed propaganda about a dead privileged man

kingat · 09/04/2021 23:26

I prefer this to constant covid cases count over the whole past year

tobee · 09/04/2021 23:26

I know this is further stretching the remit of the thread, but it's a mistake to say for the older generation. Or assume the younger generation aren't interested. My parents are mid 80s and have long been entirely anti monarchy.

I agree. It's really fucking weird.

Peregrina · 09/04/2021 23:27

I was fairly neutral on the royals until today, but this evening I’m feeling increasingly like a full-on Republican.

Yes, I wonder if they have misjudged the mood of the country.

I can see that they might have wanted to reschedule things and the more flippant progs like Have I got news for you, might not seem appropriate, but all day on both channels? One channel would have been enough.

monstermunchbunch · 09/04/2021 23:27

For what it's worth, there is a very sad old lady going to bed this evening... and I am not royalist.

Eleganz · 09/04/2021 23:27

From the moment I found out I've steered clear of the BBC and other media. It has been a pleasant day otherwise.

Badyboo · 09/04/2021 23:27

@Twintub it's one thing to disagree with some bbc stuff. It's another to be forced to pay for three BBC channels showing literally the same thing or nothing at all.

My very elderly aunt is also massively upset because her soap schedule has once again gone to pot, but hey, she didn't live in a Palace so who cares, right?

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 23:29

He deserves better than petty comments from a keyboard warrior

He doesn't - he just needs buried as quickly and cheaply as possible. He was a rampant racist who doesn't need a personality cult building up around him or a rose tinted view of his 'achievements'.

Atalantea · 09/04/2021 23:29

@StoneofDestiny

he was mentioned in dispatches in WW2

So was my dad! (and countless others). Those that died get 2 minutes silence - Philip still alive at 99 gets a full day and we haven't envelope got to the funeral yet.

I think you will also find the real work of the DofE scheme is done by others - many volunteers too.

8 days apparently

Serves as a useful reminder as to what this country is like at least.?

Peregrina · 09/04/2021 23:32

We don't really know what Prince Philips health was like since he came out of hospital. I imagine that the Royals knew his death was imminent, and if he was in pain, sadness of the family can come tempered with some relief that your loved one is no longer suffering.

Confusedandshaken · 09/04/2021 23:33

YANBU. Old man who married well dies.

I can quite understand that it is important to his wife and family but personally I don't give a shit. I had some mates over earlier for a socially distanced BBQ and one of them toasted him. Fortunately for me I was busy cooking at that time so I had an excuse for not participating.

Nanny0gg · 09/04/2021 23:34

@tara66

As Prince Phillip is the husband of the Queen - the continue broadcasting/TV/newspaper articles today about him are part of tradition and protocol on the death of someone of his stature. The whole country is considered to be in mourning and the media are paying respect. He only died today anyway. People may not realise we are experiencing a national mourning event because it has been so long since an important member of the Royal Family died and they do not know what is involved..
Quite.

And this will happen as long as we have a monarchy.

So until that changes, find something else to do if you're not interested.

But from an historical POV, if nothing else, the biographical programmes are very interesting

Twintub · 09/04/2021 23:36

@Badyboo I agree it’s a bit excessive over all channels but it’s not an utter disaster people seem really riled up. While we have a RF this is what happens it might change when the Queen dies. I don’t think living in the palace is what it’s cracked up to be especially in this digital age. I would say a huge no thanks to that :-)

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 23:38

Even the poor sods that weren't watching TV and went to visit RHS gardens were unceremoniously chucked out! Given they had to book their tickets weeks in advance and planned their day around it, it's pathetic that this was seen as another opportunity to force others to join in 'mourning'.

Peregrina · 09/04/2021 23:40

Oh dear, when the Queen dies, they will go completely over the top. It then gets beyond the stage of showing respect.

But once she has gone, well, I think big changes could come about - a whole load of Commonwealth countries deciding that they don't need Charles as their head of State as a starter.

Charley50 · 09/04/2021 23:47

Obviously each channel is going to commemorate him, but every BBC channel, including all of their music channels, is completely OTT and ridiculous. We are often told that the monarchy is mainly ceremonial these days, and holds no power, so why this extremes deference and brainwashing. It's a sad day for the Queen and her family, but this mad. It really doesn't sit right with me.

SpanishImposition · 09/04/2021 23:49

It hasn’t even been a day! He was a privileged man who worked pretty hard for 70 years. He fought for his country, backed up his wife and committed himself to charitable causes. He also had some questionable humour but also personal staff who worked for him for decades and decades. He wasn’t perfect, no one is, but it has not even been a day! Some people will have been at work and not realised til 5pm or whenever. This news coverage is actually not crazy.

It will be beyond today but I think today has been fine. Not everyone states at their phone every 20 mins or watches day time tv so that’s why they keep it rolling.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/04/2021 23:54

Just wait til the Queen dies! TG for Netflix and Prime
