At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

Which bit is unlikely @Sparklingbrook ?

HeddaGarbled · 09/04/2021 22:44

You’re like junkies being denied a fix. One evening without a few TV programmes. How will you ever cope?

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:44

FFS, Prince Philip devoted over 70 years to public service

He gained over 70:years of luxury living, pampered and preened and over indulged. Even his well published openly racist comments were passed over as 'gaffs', that anybody else 'on duty' would have been sacked for. He had a job for life without the qualifications or character to do it right. He didn't die prematurely or of overwork that's for sure.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:44

Diana died in 1997, the Queen Mother in 2002 (as did Princess Mgt for which I don't remember much coverage).

So in 24 years, people are complaining about disrupted TV coverage that's only happened 3 times.

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:46

@tara66

As Prince Phillip is the husband of the Queen - the continue broadcasting/TV/newspaper articles today about him are part of tradition and protocol on the death of someone of his stature. The whole country is considered to be in mourning and the media are paying respect. He only died today anyway. People may not realise we are experiencing a national mourning event because it has been so long since an important member of the Royal Family died and they do not know what is involved..
Yes that's right. We had no idea.
Badyboo · 09/04/2021 22:46

Yet people are complaining about missing an afternoon of TV because of tributes to him.

It's not an afternoon of TV. It's at least four channels which we must pay for by law if you want to watch broadcast TV, one of which (BBC4) literally isn't showing anything else either. I have no issue with BBC1 devoting coverage to him, but the other channels is overkill and I suspect will have the opposite effect from what is intended.

TravelDreamLife · 09/04/2021 22:46

We're on OZ & I feel the same. I feel empathy as I would for any family, but the royals really mean nothing to me. Was annoyed I was watching a movie which cut out half way through for a doco & major channels advising special coverage on every news show & prime time tonight today as well. I'm mildly disturbed they had so much ready to roll.

I really don't get why channels do it. Who would watch this on repeat, ad nauseum? We don't watch much tv so just switched off & will again when funeral reignites it. So, no one's watching it anyway.

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:47

Arent people debating as to whether it's an anachronism?

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:49

I don't think it's anachronistic to give over the TV schedules to celebrating his life.

Or are you talking about the RF being anachronistic? If enough people think it is then the RF will fall. But as I've said before I doubt it will happen in the next few decades.

Well apparently there’s going to be so many more royal deaths to be had there needs to be a dedicated channel for it. Confused
Badyboo · 09/04/2021 22:49

The whole country is considered to be in mourning

Well, we aren't. Fairly obviously.

Panpig · 09/04/2021 22:49

It's awful how much coverage that obnoxious man is getting. I felt really sad when it was announced that Paul Ritter had died aged only 54. However It is never a tragedy or a shock when a 99 year old dies. And it's bizarre how obsessed the BBC are with his death, considering their obvious stance on racism, sexism, rich white men and the class system etc.

For enough @Keyring. But obviously lots of people on here think it is anachronistic.

Endlesscleaning · 09/04/2021 22:51

@StoneofDestiny

He had a job for life without the qualifications or character to do it right.

I think he did a bloody brilliant job: 70 years of devoted service in the public eye, supporting the Queen and carrying out royal duties himself.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:51

I accept that @Tobee.

Hoolihan · 09/04/2021 22:52

Prefer Masterchef to Prince Philip by a long way.

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:52

Apparently people don't want to hear this but it is Ofcom that decide the protocol. The bbc have to agree if they want to carry on. The same with itv. And to an extent sky news I presume.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:52

Yet people are complaining about missing an afternoon of TV because of tributes to him

It's ridiculous - people have to pay a license fee and get no access to their favourite programmes. But it's not just that - it's the schedulers deciding we all want to watch this massive over reaction to the death of. 99 year old royal on every channel. Shove it on one channel and let people decide if they want to watch it.

SionnachGlic · 09/04/2021 22:52

Change the channel if you don't want to watch. He was senior royal & husband of the Queen for 70+ yrs...it is proper & right to acknowledge him. For me, and I'm not British, I'm happy to have an opportunity watch now as been working all day & then kids etc...very nteresting to know about his early life & his service to Queen & country. V sad to hear of his death.

XenoBitch · 09/04/2021 22:53

He is royalty... top tier royalty. So this is history book making stuff.
That is why the television schedules are screwed up.

Badyboo · 09/04/2021 22:53

A couple of years in the Navy followed by a lifetime of indolence. God forbid the rest of us not worship him

kierenthecommunity · 09/04/2021 22:53

In fact why ARE the journalists ghoulishly parking themselves outside the royal palaces? There was even someone outside Sandringham telling us the astonishing news that no one was there.

It’s not as if someone from the RF is going to nip out and give them an exclusive interview. So what’s so respectful and deferent about seeing an odd MOP walking past behind them?

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:54

Granted but why on all channels? Because of what has been agreed with Ofcom. The independent regulator

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:54

@Badyboo

A couple of years in the Navy followed by a lifetime of indolence. God forbid the rest of us not worship him
An extremely harsh, disrupted and sad childhood. Not many of us would swap places.

No one is worshipping him - we merely mourn the passing of the Queen's consort.

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2021 22:55

Shame ‘Points of View’ isn’t on any more. Why oh why oh why etc. 😂
