Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

@crackofdoom

There have been around 130,000 deaths from COVID this year. Most of those people were spouses, parents, siblings, and are sorely missed by their families. Many of them had led long and worthwhile lives, and done many interesting things. Where’s THEIR wall to wall coverage? 🤔
Completely agree with this. I have no wish to be disrespectful to the D of E and and I know this is sad for his family.

But after the year that we have all had in which so many people have died - many of whom should have had many more years and had their lives cut short - I find it really hard to feel particular sadness that an extremely privileged person has passed away at the end of a long life. I think this kind of intensive coverage could really backfire at a time when there are so many bereaved and traumatised people.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:24

@StoneofDestiny

he was mentioned in dispatches in WW2

So was my dad! (and countless others). Those that died get 2 minutes silence - Philip still alive at 99 gets a full day and we haven't envelope got to the funeral yet.

I think you will also find the real work of the DofE scheme is done by others - many volunteers too.

Well I wouldn't have expected the DoE to take 6 million children through their paces - of course they needed volunteers.

Others' equally courageous acts during WW2 does not diminish his.

Still, to each his own.

R4 extra also frigging suspended. That AND no Corrie will bring out the Roundhead in me.
Been on clubhouse most of the day, and it seems the rest of the world couldn’t give a rats ass.
Nicholas Witchell is going to be on ALL WEEKEND. Angry
Thank the lord for streaming services

Cactus1982 · 09/04/2021 22:25

@sirfredfredgeorge

Even programming on BBC4 has been suspended! Surely that’s taking it a little bit far?

It's a live woman's football match though, you can understand why it wouldn't be thought of as important

It’s BBC4. It’s a digital channel. Fair enough clear the schedules on BBC1 but there’s no need to clear them on BBC2 and BBC4 as well.
@Nanny0gg - Sadly that’s not what I’ve heard from someone who worked around him. He was said to be very rude and completely out of touch with reality and had no understanding how most ordinary people live.
I met him and came away with a thoroughly positive impression. Other people I know found the same. I'd far rather have the decorated naval officer than some dull politician around to dinner any day.

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:25

Just done a bit of research.

People should be complaining to Ofcom. Not the bbc or itv. Ofcom makes the agreement with the channels.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:25

Some of the statements Philip made in representing our country:

“British women can’t cook”

“Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed” (during the 1981 recession).

“You are a woman, aren’t you?” (in Kenya after accepting a small gift from a local woman).

“If you stay here much longer you’ll all be slitty-eyed” (to a group of British students during a royal visit to China).

“You can’t have been here that long, you haven’t got pot belly” (to a Briton he met in Hungary).

“Aren’t most of you descended from pirates?” (to a wealthy islander in the Cayman Islands).

kierenthecommunity · 09/04/2021 22:26

We just finished watching The Falcon and Winter Soldier on Netflix and the TV has defaulted to BBC1. And while it’s not surprise the news is all about PP, there’s Helena outside Windsor Castle telling us about a little boy called Oscar, and pointing out the queen is a widow. And Sarah outside Buckingham Palace saying the RF are asking the crowds to stay away and sign books of condolence. For the sixth time today. Only it’s dark and they’re wearing heavier coats.

I get the respect and deference thing but does it have to be so dull?

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2021 22:27

What’s Ofcom going to do? Get in their time machine and make today never happen? Confused

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:27

Some more of his comments we kept him in luxury for:

"How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test” (to a Scottish driving instructor).

“It looks as if it was put in by an Indian” (referring to an old-fashioned fuse box in a factory near Edinburgh).

“Still throwing spears?” (question put to an Aboriginal Australian during a visit).

“There’s a lot of your family in tonight” (after looking at the name badge of businessman Atul Patel at a Palace reception for British Indians).

“The Philippines must be half-empty as you’re all here running the NHS” (on meeting a Filipino nurse at Luton and Dunstable Hospital).

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:28

Well they must have known it was pretty likely @Sparklingbrook . They review it from time to time. The tell them broadcasters what the rules are surely?

Sorry that wasn't meant to be so oafishly put! Grin

Ofcom tell the broadcasters what to do. Chanel 4 has different rules etc.

@Moulesvinrouge1

I’m amazed that most people watch enough telly to care in this day and age. I have probably watched ‘live’ tv once in the last year? Most watch streaming services or iplayer as and when I want or need. Am truly shocked people actually tune in to live tv!
Likewise, I'm wondering "what's a TV?"
LadyDangerfield · 09/04/2021 22:33

As long as they don't skip Line of Duty this week......

cateycloggs · 09/04/2021 22:34

I think the BBC panicked for fear of being branded anti-monarchy, or pre-panicked as presumably they had a plan in place. I have complained because they have also taken several radio stations as well as BBC4 off air to go over the same stuff. Also I have got a life, this is my life. Strangely it is worth a lot to me. I think the life and death of the DofE is of historical interest and may prove to be a tipping point for the monarchy but that remains to be seen.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:35

And yet more of his offensive remarks:

Speaking to young deaf people in Cardiff, Wales, in 1999, referring to a school’s steel band: “Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf.”

Meeting the president of Nigeria, who was dressed in traditional robes: “You look like you’re ready for bed!”

To a group of female Labour Party lawmakers at a party at Buckingham Palace in 2000: “Ah, so this is feminist corner then.”

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2021 22:36

Ah ok @tobee so that when Prince Phillip dies the next time this doesn’t happen again? Good plan.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:39

Sadly, there are a hell of a lot more royal funerals to be had - maybe they will learn something from the complains - maybe set up a special channel for all the royal stuff.

Endlesscleaning · 09/04/2021 22:40

FFS, Prince Philip devoted over 70 years to public service.

Yet people are complaining about missing an afternoon of TV because of tributes to him.

Seriously Shock

I think you are right in that they were damned if they do and and damned if they didn’t. I accept all day coverage on BBC1. But on BBC2, BBC4 and all radio stations as well is way too extreme IMO. I don’t remember this kind of wall to wall coverage when the Queen Mother died. Diana’s death isn’t comparable as she was killed suddenly in an accident during her prime.

I mean they’ve even made special idents with the Duke’s coat of arms. God knows how much that cost.

yes quite. That is literally the source of people's pain - that they cannot watch their favourite TV prog tonight.

!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 09/04/2021 22:42

Quite like the idea of a dedicated BBC grovelling/arse-licking channel.

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2021 22:43

Unlikely @tobee. It’s not like there’s a royal death every week.

I too am surprised how much terrestrial telly everyone seems to want to watch now they can’t. On the hundreds of ‘no TVs in bedrooms’ threads everyone claims to never watch it. Grin

tara66 · 09/04/2021 22:44

As Prince Phillip is the husband of the Queen - the continue broadcasting/TV/newspaper articles today about him are part of tradition and protocol on the death of someone of his stature. The whole country is considered to be in mourning and the media are paying respect. He only died today anyway. People may not realise we are experiencing a national mourning event because it has been so long since an important member of the Royal Family died and they do not know what is involved..
