At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

@ImAlrightThanx

Because legally the PM does not have absolute power, and if we were to create an elected HoS they would be restricted and subject to measures and controls just like the PM

But parliament create the laws? Theoretically, could they not pass a law to make the PM have absolute power?

I don't think so - wouldn't it have to go through the House of Lords, who'd veto it?
tobee · 09/04/2021 22:03

If they did put normal tv and radio there'd be plenty complaining about that.

idontlikealdi · 09/04/2021 22:03

@ilovecarbs90

No one can hand on heard say his death was a shock - he was 99 and no one is getting out of this world alive. We all die. So yes, Diana's death was much more shocking because it wasn't expected at her age.

But that being said, a death is still sad to the family no matter what the age. It's a fact of life, but a sad one. And even though Prince Philip is a stranger to us, his death is a reminder of the passage of time and the inevitable fact death will come to us all. Not many people will have been Alive in a time without the queen and Philip, so this truly is the end of an era and I do feel sorry for the queen. I can't imagine how she must be feeling.

I heard some in Windsor on the news saying is such a shock! Ffs.

Thanks for the reply @UrAWizHarry. Would the pm be unable to change the law though? Felt like the government were pretty close to it at times in 2019

The real problem in a theoretical Republic UK wouldn't be the absence of the Monarchy as is, but they fact we have a completely unelected upper chamber that does not impede the will of the lower one. That would have to change, and frankly, we need rid of the Lords far more than we need rid of the Royals anyway.

tobee · 09/04/2021 22:03

Presumably the House of Lords would be gone too @Keyring ?

yes I suppose that's right.

I don't think we are revolutionary by nature in the UK - apart from the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 - which was bloodless (largely).

We need a replacement for the House of Lords to do the checks and detailed work of Parliament. Would it be elected or appointed? Again, easy to have a knee jerk reaction.

Well defenders of the Lords often make the point that who better to scrutinise government than some of the oldest, wisest, most experienced heads and former politicians around?

To that I just say, fine, then let them stand for election so we can elect/deselect them if they are the best possible candidates.

It's a national scandal that there are people sitting picking up Lords attendance simply because they're a mate of former PM's or because they happen to have crawled up the food chain in a specific church. High time it was put to the sword.

Cactus1982 · 09/04/2021 22:12

Even programming on BBC4 has been suspended! Surely that’s taking it a little bit far?

It's a live woman's football match though, you can understand why it wouldn't be thought of as important

Be interesting to see how many of the electorate could be bothered to vote in such an election. Would they be voted for individually? Or on party lines? Would be a good thing? Would they be like the tiers of government in the USA? Or like the EU leaders?

adrianmolesmole · 09/04/2021 22:15

@Keyring

PP was mentioned in dispatches in WW2

He helped 6 million plus young people through the DOE award scheme.

To name but two.

Read up on the rest.

All I remember is that he was a big fat racist. That's tells me enough.
tobee · 09/04/2021 22:15

I want to get rid of the lords. But want a good replacement.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 22:16

So was my dad! (and countless others). Those that died get 2 minutes silence - Philip still alive at 99 gets a full day and we haven't envelope got to the funeral yet.

I think you will also find the real work of the DofE scheme is done by others - many volunteers too.

KathyEdge · 09/04/2021 22:17

Very well put

@lynsey91

How sad that so many people are annoyed that they can't watch a certain programme or just that they think there is too much coverage of Prince Phillip's death.

Even sadder are those that are actually complaining to the BBC. Get a life for goodness sake

It's a real shame for the Queen and the Royal Family. As someone forced to pay the BBC licence fee, however, in order to watch live TV across other channels, I feel that the decision to show two entire BBC channels to identical coverage of PP is a poor one. I've used the link posted earlier to complain to the BBC. Hopefully they will take this feedback on board.
Ontheboardwalk · 09/04/2021 22:20

Another one who doesn’t get why they are showing the exact same programme on BBC 1, BBC 2 AND BBC news what it the point? I also don’t understand how this impacts BBC 4

Tonight’s episode of Great British Menu is now (hopefully) on Sunday at 9.30 am. Check your series link is working properly if you are missing watching it tonight like I am

kierenthecommunity · 09/04/2021 22:20

Well they’ve already cancelled a show on Radio 2 about Duran Duran at 40. As as that wasn’t on until Saturday 9pm I think it’s safe to say there’s a bit more rescheduling to come 😩.

The coverage itself just seems so banal. The history stuff is interesting but the talking heads are a bit much. Who gives a toss what the likes of Theresa May, Michael Palin or Bear Grylls thought of him?

That's a bit shocking re the scheduling!

Just seen the black cabs lined up down the Mall. Amazing sight.
That’s on SM though. I can’t watch the - non news people opinions- news all evening.

Long before Prince Philip allegedly voiced "concerns" about Markle, he was known to make sexist comments like, "I don't think a prostitute is more moral than a wife, but they are doing the same thing." In 2001, he told 13-year-old Andrew Adams, who aspired to become an astronaut, that he should "lose weight." The following year, he allegedly told a 14-year-old at a Bangladeshi youth club that he looked like he was "on drugs," after asking who else there was on drugs. He told the president of Nigeria, who was dressed in a traditional robe, that the president looked he was "ready for bed." Philip was once also accused of comparing Ethiopian art to "the kind of thing my daughter would bring back from school art lessons.”
