Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

God it's unbearable. I can't even listen to bloody jazz fm without them ramming it down my throat every few minutes. I switched on the tv by mistake earlier and Nick I-think-I'm-fucking-royal-myself Witchell was on blathering away. In the few seconds it took me to turn it off I nearly vomited. He is an absolute cock polisher.

The media in this country, particularly the bbc seem to be behaving like it's the 1970s. I sense that a lot of people just don't care, or they don't care that much.

Where were the royals when child abuse in jersey was being hushed up by the direct representatives of the queen? Disgraceful

Blackberrycream · 09/04/2021 21:29

I agree Keyring
It is history. I’m reading a book now but listened for a bit and discussed it with my children. We also discussed his role in taking second place to his wife which would have been quite unusual at the time and does show something of his character.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:30

@Blackberrycream - yes that's a very good point about him taking up second place after giving up an illustrious navy career.

malificent7 · 09/04/2021 21:32

Although i am not a royalist i cannot find it in my heart to moan about this coverage...it was bound to be ott.
I actually think he was a facinating character expecially after watching the crown and has been supporting the Queen for years. I think it is apt to look back at the Queen's late spouse's life in this way even though he was controversial

CathyorClaire · 09/04/2021 21:35

It is better that the British people are loyal to a monarch than a megalomaniac president like Blair or another crap leader that we usually get. Haven't you noticed that we have a form for voting in utter tossers?

The monarch's only loyalty is to the preservation of the monarchy and her wallet

If we vote in a clown in president's clothing we have the option of voting them out again. It's also worth noting that but for an accident of birth we'd be sweating (unlike him) at the thought of King Andrew next time round...

CatAndHisKit · 09/04/2021 21:35

Blackberry and Keyring agree that the 6pm news coverage made an emphasis on gthis rightly, as well as a good run through his life - I dodn't know a lot, I actually appreciate his contributions with more knowledge now.
Some people on this thread are ridiculusly ignorant but most importantly, closed-minded. Calliing someone 'waste of space' because you just don't know anything abour his work and military service wjere he was a valued leader, and not bothered to listen about his achievements and the fact many people appreciated him incl younf people - just pathetic.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 21:36

^The foundation that keeps the stability of our country?*

It actually does. It is better that the British people are loyal to a monarch than a megalomaniac president like Blair or another crap leader that we usually get. Haven't you noticed that we have a form for voting in utter tossers

This nonsense again.
We vote in tossers (particularly Johnson), but at least they were elected tossers. We get no choice with the parasitic royals, who have a small army of extended family members and hangers on and a vast entourage of 'courtiers' all paid for by taxpayers. If Philip had been the monarch, god help us with the racist comments he trotted out across the globe that were usually put down as 'gaffs', or even Andrew 🤬. If they had been voted in they could have been sacked - but we are stuck with this lot until the country grows up and realise what mugs we are for supporting this anachronistic load of bullshit.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:36

If the monarchy isn't popular, it will fall. I suspect it will be around long enough to welcome King William and Queen Catherine.

AngeloMysterioso · 09/04/2021 21:37

It was ten times worse with Diana, and she wasn’t consort to the monarch for 73 years. Non stop TV coverage on all 5 channels and misery music on the radio.

Just be glad we won’t be subjected to candle in the wind this time.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 09/04/2021 21:38

Not everyone is a fawning subject. Sooner we get rid of the freeloading wastes of space the better.

He was 99. Yes, I'm sure it's sad for the family but personally I couldn't give a fuck.

Quite.

I'm baffled at the assertion that they somehow hold the UK together. They serve absolutely no purpose beyond fulfilling archaic and bizarre rituals. Modern nations have absolutely no need of a separate Head of State. They could vanish tomorrow and it wouldn't make the blindest bit of material difference to how the UK functions beyond the fact that we'd likely drop a load of completely perfunctory and pointless ceremonial nonsense.

They're a useful tourist attraction. Beyond that, they fulfil no essential purpose whatsoever.

woodhill · 09/04/2021 21:38

Yanbu why does it need to be on BBC1 and BBC2 at same time

duvetdreaming · 09/04/2021 21:38

@Keyring

that''s true....but it was and is bound to happen when a senior royal dies. It doesn't happen that often - last one was the Queen Mother and I don't remember the coverage being so all pervading.
It was 2001 and TV channels were different then.
Shimmyshimmycocobop · 09/04/2021 21:39

YANBU and yes to the pp saying that TV programmers are acting like it's the 1970's. I am sorry for his family but I'm sure it's not that long ago that we read stories about how offensively racist and rude he was to people who had often waited hours to see him.
Now apparently he was some kind of a saint Hmm

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:39

For all those who would like to see the end of the monarchy - the way to achieve this is to support a political party who advocates for this.

None do so at the moment.

And with the monarchy's ability to re-invent itself, those longing for a republic are going to have a very long wait.

duvetdreaming · 09/04/2021 21:39
  1. Typo!
emmylousings · 09/04/2021 21:39

I am quite surprised that from the moment of the announcement around midday to now....until whenever, the whole of R4 is just Philip. I love R4. This seems over the top. I get that he is a significant figure but, 9/10 + hours continuously? Dread to think what it will be like when HRH dies. It's it bit too fawning, sycophantic for me, but as you can probably tell I am not a royalist.

tobee · 09/04/2021 21:40

If the monarchy is abolished it needs to be done in a proper non knee jerk way. We don't want a worse replacement. However, I'm sure there would be a million different ideas as to what should replace it. Which is one of the reasons people will want to stick with the default setting. Generally people aren't keen on change.

adrianmolesmole · 09/04/2021 21:40

No bloody Eastenders, that pisses me off. IDGAF about the royals, it's so over the top it's ridiculous. What did PP do that was so great, anyway?

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:41

PP was mentioned in dispatches in WW2

He helped 6 million plus young people through the DOE award scheme.

To name but two.

Read up on the rest.

tobee · 09/04/2021 21:42

@AngeloMysterioso

It was ten times worse with Diana, and she wasn’t consort to the monarch for 73 years. Non stop TV coverage on all 5 channels and misery music on the radio.

Just be glad we won’t be subjected to candle in the wind this time.

Although it least that was a bit more of a moving story. As in there was momentum.

StoneofDestiny · 09/04/2021 21:42

We also discussed his role in taking second place to his wife which would have been quite unusual at the time and does show something of his character

He basically was an unemployed man living all his life on taxpayers - whom he showed utter contempt for on more than one occasion. His character was defined by how he treated others across the world (not how he treated his wife - though of course, he was like so many royals, unfaithful to her too).

3CCC · 09/04/2021 21:42

Yanbu our family is as royalist as it get and we all really liked Prince Philip
However...
It's the fact that it's the exact same content at the same time on bbc 1 & 2. + channels itv &5 and earlier channel 4 too

sirfredfredgeorge · 09/04/2021 21:42

The BBC were going to put out the England football match tonight on BBC 4, instead of putting out the match they've dropped it and put a stupid advertising graphic that's got no mention of HRH, no mention of how to watch the match, just saying there's a football match on you could watch now.

You could eventually find it on the BBC website, but instead of on live TV, it's now purely on a webpage. It's a nonsense, it's not even honouring HRH as it's still showing football with crowd noise.

There's no way they would've done it with a men's match.

And yes all of it is just crazy over the top.

LakieLady · 09/04/2021 21:42

@CurlyhairedAssassin

I'm may be being totally ageist here but I imagine that it's mostly people of the older generation who both love the monarchy and who only have freeview channels. Catering for them?

Thank god for Sky Q.

I'm 65 and only have Freeview, but I'm fucking pissed off about it. I have no interest whatsoever in the royal family.

If we get all this for the old racist, wtf is it going to be like when Betty shuffles of, ffs?

Kendodd · 09/04/2021 21:42

Then find a non-uk channel. There's quite a few
It's even all over CNN ffs.
