Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death

Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

To my surprise, I'm really enjoying the evening coverage on BBC 1 Scotland.

'Didn't realise he was an environmentalist'.
Do you have to shoot tigers to be labelled.....an 'enviromentalist' , or can anyone get the gig ?

@Bitofanexpert

Totally agree. We aren’t in the 90s anymore, there are news channels for this.

Had to laugh at a banner across cbeebies during the bedtime hour telling people to turn to bbc one for a ‘major news report’.

Unfortunately no one comes between my toddlers and in the night garden, they won’t turn that crap off for no one Grin

😂 I did switch to CBeebies earlier to see if they were broadcasting it the as well - haven't had that channel on in years given my daughter is 18!
Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:00

there's a lot of ignorance on this thread. It's sad. People wrapped up totally in their own lives.

Perhaps we should start to be taught about the constitution/role of the monarch in schools. It might help.

ImAlrightThanx · 09/04/2021 21:01

@MissingMyOldLife

The OP's post is what I hate about modern Britain.

Have a bit of respect. A well-loved member of our monarchy, the foundation that keeps the stability of our country, has just died and here you are showing how little class and respect you have.

Sorry, you are missing Hollyoaks or Coronation Street. I'm sure you'll catch up.

Oh please. He's a celebrity. I don't agree with placing humans above over in status because they happen to be born into privilege and wealth. King or dustman= human. I feel for his family but that is all. The fragile stability of the country is dependent on the plebs not uprising, really. Nothing else.
bluechameleon · 09/04/2021 21:01

Oh, I so agree. Twice today I've managed to get both DC quiet in front of the telly and escaped to the kitchen for some peace, only to find R4 is wall to wall Prince Philip. Surely a bit on the news and a documentary or two would suffice?

CovidCorvid · 09/04/2021 21:02

Thankfully gogglebox is on.

Jumpers268 · 09/04/2021 21:02

@TheFairyCaravan my comment definitely wasn't aimed at you! In fact, all for people watching TV whenever they want, regardless of reasons ♥️.

peak2021 · 09/04/2021 21:02

I don't think you should go to the Tower, OP. You have the choice to do other things and perhaps watch channels or film streaming, because we have a democracy (of sorts). We do so because the Duke of Edinburgh and others fought against Hitler and the Nazis in the second world war, in his case even to the point of disowning his sisters and not inviting them to his wedding. Respect his war service and the founding of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme if nothing else about him.

OP I wonder how you will manage when the Queen dies.

OrangeBananaFish · 09/04/2021 21:02

While I feel for the queen right now and for other family members I don't see the need for as much coverage as this. Would understand it a bit more if it was a much younger person or if there was a developing story somewhere.

Also understand that some people will want to watch it and that's fine, but not everyone does. Some people (yes I do include myself) are interested to know that it happened, but that's it.

I'm not surprised by it though TBH.

Oh and BTW I'm not missing anything as I don't watch a lot of normal TV anyway so that's not the reason why I agree with the OP so that argument doesn't wash with me.

I wonder if those that are aghast at us thinking its a bit OTT are those that will mourn a passing of a 99 year old they never met.

Again just to reiterate I do feel for the queen and the family, but me and my life personally it wont effect really.

CathyorClaire · 09/04/2021 21:03

constitutional democracies like the UK are the most stable countries on earth

Assuming you meant monarchies, do you have a link for this?

In response to OP, Yanbu. Nothing else of note appears to have happened today.

Chloemol · 09/04/2021 21:04

It’s a sign of respect for the man. It’s for one day, quit moaning

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 09/04/2021 21:05

I've been binging line of duty to escape the coverage. It's great.

I did mean monarchies.

there's a lot of ignorance on this thread

Its not ignorace to point out a channel that people pay for doesn't need to same programme on, on 4 channels. Put it on BBC1 by all means and switch things over to BBC2

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:07

It is ignorant for those to look no further than the end of their noses, to say, oh it's an old privileged man, what do I care? - without looking at the wider context.

And yet on a larger scale he did a great deal to preserve wildlife and the natural world, animal and plant, and he began trying to tackle climate change many years before it was a headline issue. I've just seen a clip where he talked about the change of name from World Wildlife Fund to World Wide Fund for Nature.

Before watching this, I would only have known about his hunting. So I'm finding it very interesting.

AlinaSquareQueen · 09/04/2021 21:10

YANBU

I tried to avoid the saturation coverage by tuning into Sky Sports News - and it was on there as well!

As PPs have said, this is when streamed TV comes into its own, thank goodness.

UrAWizHarry · 09/04/2021 21:12

@Keyring

there's a lot of ignorance on this thread. It's sad. People wrapped up totally in their own lives.

Perhaps we should start to be taught about the constitution/role of the monarch in schools. It might help.

Asking why the same coverage is being shown completely unnecessarily across multiple channels is not ignorant.

An old man has died. Yes, it's sad for the family but having never met the man personally I couldn't care less.

Keyring · 09/04/2021 21:13

I am not referring to people asking about tv saturation.

The ignorance I refer to is the disregard for the nation's history. It's sad.

tobee · 09/04/2021 21:13

So it is protocol. But should it be?

Captpike · 09/04/2021 21:14

constitutional democracies like the UK are the most stable countries on earth.

Plenty of constitutional democracies are not monarchies.

bonbonours · 09/04/2021 21:14

I haven't even noticed. Who watches live TV? We only ever watch stuff when we fancy it on catch up.

UrAWizHarry · 09/04/2021 21:15

A history of replacing gardener's world with the same 5 minute news package on a loop across every available channel? That history?
MimiPigeon · 09/04/2021 21:15

I greatly doubt the RF is watching the coverage anyway. They’re probably watching Netflix. One channel is fair enough but I don’t see the need to have it on all of them.
