I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

OP posts:
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 10/04/2021 09:54

😂😂 you don't own the name op!!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 10/04/2021 09:57

Also, lots of dogs are called human names so I'm sure most of us share our name with one dog or another! How involved in the dogs life will you be? Just use the name!!

BraveGoldie · 10/04/2021 10:08

Bravo OP..... I have to say you were sounding a little bit nutty to start with but good job for calming down!

Warmest congratulations on your baby, whatever his/her name turns out to be, I have no doubt they will bring tons of joy.

Smile
Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 10/04/2021 10:14

Glad to see you have calmed down and feel more positive about the name.
My dd share her name with 2 others in the year group. Not one of them bothers about it they just use name plus surname initial.
Ds shares his name with plenty of dogs. It doesnt bother me or him. It actually makes me laugh that when the dog is called to stop he actually listens to the owner (and ignores me Hmm )
Although both have gone through a phase of wanting to be called a thomas the tank engine name or other cartoon character so your beautiful name will be out the window for a few months for that phase anyway Grin

Waspie · 10/04/2021 10:19

I bet it's Marley Grin

Our son has the same name as DP's dad's dog. As someone upthread said, it really doesn't matter unless they're both careening around the park being annoying. In fact, it's quite useful because you can get the attention of both dog and boy at the same time.

We had a rescue gerbil (long story) when I was a child and it had the same name as my lovely auntie. Unfortunately lovely auntie was terrified of small rodents. She was not best pleased at the gerbil's name; but appreciated that we didn't name her. Bless her she still looked after the gerbil when we went on holiday despite being phobic. Top woman. Sadly missed.

Report her to the police. Maybe social services too.

iolaus · 10/04/2021 11:10

@picklemewalnuts

You can choose a really unusual name and still have two in the same junior school class- happened to a friend. It's just one of those incalculable things.
I remember hearing someone who had called her daughter Persephone and her husband had gone into the local florist to get some flowers and mentioned what the baby was called. Florists reply was 'oh are they for 'different woman in same town' who'd had a little girl called Persephone about three days earlier
CounsellorTroi · 10/04/2021 11:14

I know how Persephone is pronounced but have an u controllable desire to say Pursephone.

RonSwansonsChair · 10/04/2021 11:24

@Leprechaunsundays

I was just a bit sad to think that this puppy would have this lovely name and everybody might think I’m copying. Or because it’s unusual maybe they would even think I’d given my baby a name that was meant for a dog? But I’ve been reading again about all of your pets with human names and I can see I was being a bit silly. So DH and I WILL keep our baby girl’s original name and never mind that it’s the same as my friend’s dog. Because I do love it and I don’t want to let this spoil it.
What about the fact that your husband isn't really sure about the name? Sounded like he was only going along with it because you wanted to.
bemusedmoose · 10/04/2021 11:46

You can't expect someone to change a name they choose because you also chose it! That's insane.

I have a rescue cat, changed it's name to something sweet, 2 different friends then named their babies the same name. Because people like a name and they go with it, no one got their knickers in a know over it because no one has dibs on a name.

Also you don't seem to have picked it first - she did because she has the puppy and it's already named and you have just come up with it and never told anyone. So if we are going to get into the childish realms of who has dibs - she does.

But if you like the name then what the hell does it matter if someone has called their puppy the same thing? I have 3 pets with human names and kids love it. I also have a child with a regular name that we often hear puppies being called out on walks - she thinks it's cute (she's 9) her name was not used at all when i named her, now it seems everyone and everything has that name. And I honestly couldn't give a monkeys - it completely suits her and I love the sound of it even after 9 years.

If you can let something as small as a puppy name cause issues then you really need to have a think about the bigger picture.

Mylovelyhorsee · 10/04/2021 11:52

WHAT IS THE NAME!?

SpikeTruman · 10/04/2021 12:23

WHAT IS THE NAME!?

OP IS STILL USING THE NAME, SO PROBABLY WON'T SHARE IT.

theheartofthematter · 10/04/2021 12:25

The way you have acted means you won't need to worry about it. Your friend will slowly remove you from her life so it's no longer an issue. I would anyway, batshit is the word

Itlod1982 · 10/04/2021 12:33

@SpikeTruman

WHAT IS THE NAME!?

OP IS STILL USING THE NAME, SO PROBABLY WON'T SHARE IT.

But she said her partner said he wasn't keen on it after all 🤷🏻‍♀️
PixiKitKat · 10/04/2021 12:37

I saw a post on Reddit (I think!) That a family had a cat called Nigel, then a girl in the family got a boyfriend who was also called Nigel. To tell them apart the boyfriend was called Human Nigel 🤣
Plenty of pets have human names, mine does. No one owns a name so you'll either need to use it and get over it or pick another name if it really bothers you that much.

SoupDragon · 10/04/2021 12:37

It doesn't matter what the name is and the OP doesn't need to say what it is, even if posters shout at her.

Carryonlikeaporkchop · 10/04/2021 14:19

@Mylovelyhorsee

WHAT IS THE NAME!?
Why do you need to know this?

and stop bloody shouting

Isitreally17777 · 10/04/2021 14:26

Seriously! I met a guy recently, introduced him to one of my cats and he said oh that is what one of my daughters is called, I asked what the other two were called and he said x and y. X being my name and y being the name of the neighbours cat. We just laughed.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 10/04/2021 14:57

My cat is called Boris. My friend's daughter's dog is called Margot which I think is a great name for a bull terrier!

megaann · 10/04/2021 18:00

You've made the news OP BlushGrin

JennyBond · 10/04/2021 18:03

Amazing!

Itlod1982 · 10/04/2021 18:44

@megaann

Hahahahaha if OPs not on MN she'll be seeing this now 😂😂
Itlod1982 · 10/04/2021 18:45

Sport, if OPs friend isn't on MN....

theuncles · 10/04/2021 19:26

Oh no OP - sorry you made the news but at least it's not the DF.....Grin

I'm sure hormones do make things seem more of a big deal - but I'm also sure whatever you call your DC will be their perfect name, in the end. If you have a girl and stick with this one, DH will soon agree she couldn't be anything else. Ditto another name. Congratulations on your imminent delivery, and enjoy.....Flowers.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 10/04/2021 21:33

I'm not surprised this has made the news, one of my fave threads ever! Love a good AIBU dilemma!
