To ask her to change it?

I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

Someone clearly bored and thinking up ridiculous subject for a thread.

Barnowl25 · 09/04/2021 06:40

I've not Rtft but has anyone managed to find the 900th popular name? I've googled and can only find up to 100. Weird all round really.

Maireas · 09/04/2021 06:42

I think it's Jenesis or Nancy.

Wiredforsound · 09/04/2021 06:46

Well I think Buster is a lovely name for a girl.

According to this list the 900th most popular name is Amber. Think it is a US list but looking at the rest of the 900s they are all perfectly cromulent names that don’t even seem that unusual to me

Thing is if you said the name you were talking about I guarantee loads of MN'ers would have come across the name before.

My dc have popular/common names yet neither of them have ever been in a class with someone else with the same name however they have both been in classes where there have been multiples of names which I would say are relatively unusual! Once you start going to baby groups, pre school, school, clubs they will end up meeting hundreds of children and I'd be amazed if you don't come across another with the name at some point.

For all you know you could choose a name and one of your friends could use it a month later. Just pick a name you love and don't worry about anything else.

Do not message your friend again or she will think you are mad!

Leopardskin · 09/04/2021 08:01

Reckon it could be Juniper. A lot of the other names are on the wane. Juniper is going up I bet.

problembottom · 09/04/2021 08:23

My DSis met her future husband abroad and it turned out that her name was male in his country and he had a dog called it already. She hates dogs as well. Funny.

Billandben444 · 09/04/2021 08:26

Magnolia?? Bet she takes a long time in the swimming changing rooms.

(sorry... leaves room)

SilverMirrors · 09/04/2021 08:30

Oooh, please let it be Jenesis! The sibling could be Eggsodus!

This made me lolololol. Thank you!

IJustLovePirates · 09/04/2021 09:42

@Billandben444

I think you were a bit cheeky expecting her to change it tbh. Unless they're both running wild in the park at the same time, I don't see it being an issue.
😂😂😂

I’m glad you’ve come to your senses OP (and not expected your friend to “come to hers”) but thanks for the entertainment. I laughed so hard at the idea that your friend had somehow divined the secret name (scrying/prayer/divine intuition/i ching?) I thought I’d strained a sinus.

FWIW I have a horse with a human name and anyone expecting me to change it for their child would get extremely short shrift. Once I’d finished laughing.

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 09/04/2021 10:15

I understand OP. There are two camps of baby namers, the chilled ones who choose a name they like and couldn’t care less what others call theirs, then us, who don’t want a name anyone else has. I think everyone thought I was bonkers too when I said “we can’t have x because y used it, your second cousin twice removed” 😂.
Also, my friend asked her best friend if they could use her girl baby name for her dog because her friend had a boy. It’s different if they don’t know your name though.
I wonder if your name is our name because my Daughter’s name is now very popular for dogs 🙈

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/top-1000-names-in-england-and-wales-2019.html

There's the top 1000 for England and Wales. The website also has the top 1000 for Scotland and the top 500 for Northern Ireland.

Speaking more generally, as a few people have suggested anything that far from the top 50/100/200 will be weird and embarrassing for the child, there are a lot of normal names between 900 - 1000, Larissa, Carolina and Tess for example. I know people with each of those names

crosspelican · 09/04/2021 10:40

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese Some gorgeous names there -

I made a VIGOROUS case for Pearl or Ruby when I was pregnant with DD2. DH rebelled and chose a better name. :) Flora is lovely too.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 09/04/2021 11:22

I think it’s Sage. Not common here but common in the US

redwinefine · 09/04/2021 11:22

This has to be fake Grin

CharlotteRose90 · 09/04/2021 12:27

Naaaaaaaaa sorry there's no way this is real

Figgygal · 09/04/2021 15:39

I’m so glad you followed up with your friend and told her you were joking that would’ve been mortifying for you if she knew the truth

RatsolutelyFabulous · 09/04/2021 16:05

bondgirl76 · 09/04/2021 17:24

Choose a different name? They got there first.
