To ask her to change it?

I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

Fifi La Belle?

Veterinari · 08/04/2021 23:50

@Leprechaunsundays

I messaged my friend back with this

“Haha we are so alike aren’t we? Of course I don’t really expect you to change it. We have a few other options up our sleeves”

DH pointed out that our choice for boys name could actually be unisex but I don’t know if I’d like it for a girl

That's a nice message but odd.

Because you clearly do expect her to change it Confused

Veterinari · 08/04/2021 23:51

What is the name? I think it makes a difference as you're focussed on how unique it is

CharlotteRose90 · 09/04/2021 00:12

I hope this is a joke as if not it’s hilarious. You friend named her dog first why should she change it. Use the same name or pick a different one. Gave me a laugh to read though some people are unbelievable

Thenanny23 · 09/04/2021 00:36

Is the name Persephone?

It’s now more popular due to the recent Noughts & Crosses adaptation.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 09/04/2021 00:40

So not only has she ruined it for this baby, but also for our next baby in case we don’t have a girl this time

talk about overdramatic - why do you imagine everyone going to racing to name babies after your friends dog?

Arghlostmyphone · 09/04/2021 00:40

Another vote for classics.

Enough4me · 09/04/2021 00:45

I've got it I'm sure...Lassie?

Bumblebee1980a · 09/04/2021 00:54

You can't ask her to change her puppies names. Honestly, it really doesn't matter x

Bumblebee1980a · 09/04/2021 00:58

@Leprechaunsundays

It’s not Luna!

My husband thinks we should change it now and said he thought it was a bit too unusual anyway! Which is another surprise to me as well as he told me he liked it! So maybe this is for the best. I will try to see that as a positive!

I do know that this isn’t the most important thing when it comes to babies. But I do think names are important to get right.

Speaking from someone who does have an usual name, I personally don't think having a name that's no one else has is a good thing. I hated being the only one with my name when I was at school, both primary and secondary school.

A couple of years ago my DM (let’s call her Harriet) got a rescue cat, which already had the name Harriet. She didn’t want to be shouting her own name out the back door so she changed the cat’s name to Rosie, which happens to be similar to my teenage daughter’s name (Josie). Then she started accidentally calling my DD by the cat’s new name. Now I’ve started accidentally calling my daughter by the cat’s name. I think I’m just going to ask everyone in the family to change their names to Axolotyl. Or possibly Simon.

stevalnamechanger · 09/04/2021 01:17

You shouldn't expect her to change the name .

Very self important of you sorry

PerveenMistry · 09/04/2021 02:47

Honey, your offspring is going to be one of 8 billion other ordinary humans and no name is going to change the fact that she's a drop in the ocean and like most of us will live and die without making much of a mark on the world.

Focus on more important matters. Little Rhiannon or MoonUnit or Forsythia will be just fine.

kittycorner · 09/04/2021 03:22

@Leprechaunsundays is this a reverse?!

You can't control what other people name their dogs, cats, birds, fish or dc. If you love the name, use it.

kittycorner · 09/04/2021 03:24

I know someone who named their son after their beloved dead cat.

Leprechaunsundays · 09/04/2021 03:29

I was just a bit sad to think that this puppy would have this lovely name and everybody might think I’m copying. Or because it’s unusual maybe they would even think I’d given my baby a name that was meant for a dog? But I’ve been reading again about all of your pets with human names and I can see I was being a bit silly. So DH and I WILL keep our baby girl’s original name and never mind that it’s the same as my friend’s dog. Because I do love it and I don’t want to let this spoil it.

Hilarious Grin when PFB mum and fur baby mum collide! Please tell us the name OP, we'll make you feel better by telling you it's hideous and you wouldn't have wanted an Ivy-Mae anyway.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 09/04/2021 04:06

Good for you @Leprechaunsundays I love unusual names

romdowa · 09/04/2021 04:20

I spent ages researching baby names and found one I loved and then a few weeks later discovered that a very famous and controversial politician has a dog with the same name. I honestly find it hilarious 😂😂 hasnt put me off the name though.

Newcastleteacake · 09/04/2021 04:54

Of course you can make her change it. Once you show her your receipt from when you purchased it therefore it becoming solely your possession.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/04/2021 06:10

If it’s something like Nancy it’s definitely on the rise - I have 2 friends with gorgeous DDs of this name and I also know a cute Pug Grin
