To ask her to change it?

I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

I say this as a heavily pregnant woman with a rare name in mind for DC...

You're being so unreasonable I cannot believe this isn't a parody. You can't tell her to change the name or ask again. Just deal with it. Also; kids may not always suit the name you've thought of once they're born...

This just made me laugh out loud Grin
Funniest thing I’ve read in a long time

emilyfrost · 08/04/2021 19:13

YABVU. Surely this isn’t serious? I can’t believe anyone would have the audacity to ask someone else to change a name!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/04/2021 19:16

@MirandaMarple

I have a Ralph (dog) and he's 12 years old. Twelve years ago the only Ralph's I knew were pronounced Rafe. Now it's so common, all the kids are named after my dog.
It hadn’t occurred to me until I read this, but it is nice that your dog can shout his own name, @MirandaMarple! WinkGrin
MrsTreglowan · 08/04/2021 19:16

My puppy is named hey duggie but my brother doesn't mind

OliverBabish · 08/04/2021 19:17

@Slub

Is the name Shayla?
Is this a SATC reference because Grin
pinkyredrose · 08/04/2021 19:21

is the name Shayla? Grin

I loved that episode, Charlotte just lost it when her old mate 'stole' her baby name!

steppemum · 08/04/2021 19:22

so, I was at the vet this week, and there was a man dropping off his kittens for their vaccinations.

Their names?

Beryl and Norman.

honestly the best names I've heard for ages, and definitely due a resurgence.

I had a little laugh with him about his excellent names.

Yes, he said, we don't go for Tiddles. We like strange names. Our last cat was called Trevor.
Grin

I was tempted to give him my phone number and say - I need to be friends with you and your wife, you sound like my sort of people.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 08/04/2021 19:24

Well, you've got to admit that Fido is an unusual name for a girl.

PercyPiginaWig · 08/04/2021 19:24

Holy fuck you don't even know the sex (not gender) of the baby and you asked your friend to change the name.
That is so batshit, she may well assume you were joking.
If she knows you were serious then I guess apologise and the next move is up to her, it might be something you can laugh about together in future.

DartmoorDoughnut · 08/04/2021 19:26

Just tell your friend “sorry!! Crazy pregnancy hormones 🤣 “ and get back to thinking about names.

Yes you don’t want it to be every other child with the same/similar name but at the same time you don’t want your child to have to spell it every single time.

GrandTheftWalrus · 08/04/2021 19:26

I've always said if I get a pet of some sort I am going to call it a "human" name. My parents dog has a popular girls name.

I love that!

There’s a guy who takes his dogs to the vet I take my cat too and they’re called Barry and Fred. Without fail the vet or vet nurse pauses to check they’re shouting on the animal not the owner 😂

Sadly he said something hilariously funny for her, but embarrassing for him last time so think he’ll be avoiding me for the foreseeable (he thought my cat’s Teddy was an actual baby panda and got really excited, then realised I wouldn’t have a baby panda in a cat crate at a vet near the borders😂)

I’m with other posters. @Leprechaunsundays you’re on a wind up, surely?!

On the very slim chance you’re not, let me reiterate some points.

1.) dog had the name first. It’s the dog’s name.

2.) if anyone is ‘copying, it’s you.

3.) you say you didn’t tell anyone and yet you’re convinced this old friend found out somehow and named her dog the name, why...? To spite you? 😂

4.) you genuinely expected someone to rename her dog because you’d secretly chosen that name for your baby that’s not born yet and may not even be a girl? Is there a tiny chance this absolute insanity could be due to pregnancy hormones?

5.) you’ve lost the plot.

6.) plot. Gone.

7.) no one, literally no one, would give a teeny tiny shit that your kid has the same name as a dog. My kid probably has the same name as a dog. And some other kids. And some adults too.

8.) you and your kid aren’t the centre of the universe and you don’t get to control other people’s lives. This is an important one. Remember this one.

JustLyra · 08/04/2021 19:31

*funny for me

serin · 08/04/2021 19:31

Well I've heard it all now.

Oh, I do like this post! 👏👏👏
Notavegan · 08/04/2021 19:32

Glad you are starting to see sense op. This gave me a proper laugh

Ivy455 · 08/04/2021 19:40

I read your OP and immediately thought YABU but I tried to put myself in your shoes. I can see why you might be upset, I really can but looking at the situation objectively I do still think you're being unreasonable (especially as you don't even know that you're having a girl) and I mean this in the nicest way possible!
I remember getting upset at certain things when I was pregnant and people suggesting it was my hormones and it gave me the absolute fucking rage. But looking back I think they were right and I can laugh about it!
Funnily enough, I adopted a hamster when I was about 4 months pregnant and I told my also pregnant friend we were going to name her Evie. She said that was on her list of girls names (we were both having girls) but that she didn't mind!
If you do have a girl and still use this name you could even make a joke out of it when you announce her name? That's probably what I would do.

Ivy455 · 08/04/2021 19:42

Oh and also my daughter has the same name as my Aunt's dog. I'd actually totally forgotten about it.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/04/2021 19:45

I'd love it if I ever came across a dog with the same name as my child. Sadly I dont think it'll happen.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 08/04/2021 19:45

I quite often hear people shouting dogs with the same name as me - always cheers me up.

Tell us the name please OP.

LindaEllen · 08/04/2021 19:49

Technically she announced hers first so if you're that bothered that they don't have the same name you should change yours.

I wish you all the best with baby Fido :).

Leprechaunsundays · 08/04/2021 19:49

I messaged my friend back with this

“Haha we are so alike aren’t we? Of course I don’t really expect you to change it. We have a few other options up our sleeves”

DH pointed out that our choice for boys name could actually be unisex but I don’t know if I’d like it for a girl

OP posts:
rawlikesushi · 08/04/2021 19:50

I feel sorry for you op. You chose a name you love and now it will look like you copied it from your friend's dog!

I definitely think you shouldn't message your friend again now though. You want to be able to tell the funny story about how you chose the same name, not have your friend telling the completely different story about how you got pissed off and asked her to change it.
