I’m 7 months pregnant and DH and I finally have a girls name we love. It’s pretty unusual and we don’t know a single person with it. It’s something like 900th in popularity. We haven’t told anyone this name.

My friend just got a new puppy last week and posted a picture on Facebook of it announcing this same name! I immediately messaged her and said I was really sorry but that was the name we had chosen for our DD and can she choose something else. She just did the laughing emoji react to my message and then sent back “Haha that’s hilarious we chose the same one! It is a cool name though!”. She didn’t agree to change it, that’s all she said. But I assumed she understood and would do the decent thing.

Anyway today she posted again on Facebook that she had made an Instagram account for this puppy... and the name was still the same!!! What should I message her next? I thought she understood last time and now it’s just awkward to have to say it again

My dog has her own Instagram so steer clear of the name Penny please.

Thanks.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/04/2021 17:54

I can't get past the fact that your friend has set up an Instagram account for her DOG.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/04/2021 17:55

@Alreadyinmypyjamas probably a wise move.

hapagirl · 08/04/2021 17:56

My DD has a name popular with kids and dogs. In the park if I call her name, three kids look over and two dogs run over. You get used to it.

Arghlostmyphone · 08/04/2021 17:58

@Leprechaunsundays

I’m just really upset because it took us so long to find a name like that and now if we do have a DD (we’re not finding out the gender until birth) she has to share it with a dog!! I just thought being my friend she would respect my wishes
Why are you more important than her? You sound like a nutter Grin

My friend has just called her puppy, Penny.

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

It's quite common now
ViciousJackdaw · 08/04/2021 18:01

@Leprechaunsundays Personally, I think you are barking mad. I can see that this is a real bone of contention though. Why not collar her when you see her next and take the lead? Give her a flea in her ear about it. To be honest, she sounds a bit woof anyway.

poppycat10 · 08/04/2021 18:01

Oh dear I do wonder at times whether MNers are actually on the same planet as everyone else.

You can have the same name as other babies whether human or dog.

Names are not exclusive.

What will you do if you meet another friend and she has a cat with the same name Grin

Lets hope you have a boy - that will resolve the problem (until you meet someone with a dog with that name instead).

Nanny0gg · 08/04/2021 18:01

I was surprised that GoT girls's names didn't become more popular

NeverMetANiceOne · 08/04/2021 18:02

This is hilarious, I don't know if I'm buying it...

cherrytreecottage · 08/04/2021 18:04

I suspect the real issue here is not the actual name - given it's sheer coincidence, but that when you come to announce your DC on social media, your mutual friends will all assume you've copied her dogs name?!
I'm surprised you even asked her to change her dogs name tbh. Why should she?! She named it first and without knowing this was your DC chosen name.

Alreadyinmypyjamas · 08/04/2021 18:05

@Nanny0gg

Please could you ask your friend to change it. Thanks.

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

If you saw my face you'd understand why the dog has an Instagram instead of me.

Arghlostmyphone · 08/04/2021 18:05

@Crankley

Too funny.

I actually think she maybe found out somehow even though we never told anyone.

How did she do that? Crystal ball? Tarot cards? Ouija board? Mind reader?

HarrietSchulenberg said When your child starts school there will probably be 2 others in her class with the same name anyway. And you replied: Well there will be now!

Are you expecting the dog to go to your child's school? Grin

Grin Op thank you. This thread is hilarious!
Hellzbellz25 · 08/04/2021 18:06

YABU re the name and your friend is BU making an insta account for her puppy Hmm

Happy to help

cherrytreecottage · 08/04/2021 18:06

@lifeinlimbo2020

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hilarious. My sister had a baby girl not long before I was due and called her the name I had picked without knowing. What can you do?!?
Out of interest @lifeinlimbo2020 did you still continue with that name for your DC or did you change it? X
RonSwansonsChair · 08/04/2021 18:07

The OP's responses just get funnier and funnier! 😆
Seriously though OP, give you friend a break - maybe she took equally long to come up with a name for her dog? If I was her I would have sent a 🤣😂 response to you too.

minou123 · 08/04/2021 18:09

@MysteriousMonkey

It's an annoying coincidence, my sister adopted a dog with one of the names I was considering for my baby. I didn't use it after that but still I think awww thats such a lovely name every time I hear it. It is what it is though. I'd still use it if I was you. I have a child with the same name as a popular vacuum cleaner and I always tell him I named him after it. He does not find me funny but I do and that's what matters really Grin
Why did you call your child Dyson? Grin
EasterEggBelly · 08/04/2021 18:09

I have the opposite. One of my friends just named her new pet the same name as my child. It’s also an unusual name and I hate the fact she’s chosen it but what can you do? Quietly seethe!

You’ll look like you’ve copied her regardless so in your position I would change the name.

HeartsAndClubs · 08/04/2021 18:10

Tbh I am always a bit Hmm at people who deliberately want to choose an unusual name for their children. Just why?

A name that is that unusual is always going to set the child apart from the others, and rarely in a good way. Wanting an unusual name just seems a bit showy.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/04/2021 18:11

My mother named her dog india, my sil named my niece india. The dog was born first.

tillytoodles1 · 08/04/2021 18:13

Unless its Fido or Fluffy or something similar. I know kids, dogs and cats called Millie, Bella etc, you don't own a name.

DeusEx · 08/04/2021 18:14

@jessstan2

Seems OK to me. I've had pets called Simon, Jessica, Sophie, etc, and known people with those names. So what?
Simon! What type of animal was Simon?
CheeseAndHackers · 08/04/2021 18:15

One day OP you will look back and cringe at how ridiculous you're being.

Hoppinggreen · 08/04/2021 18:18

I named my son after my first dog
