So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

Coventry. I've just done a search and you can get a 4 bed detached for £450K or less in all sorts of areas of the city and surrounds.

This includes all sorts of properties, new build, thirties etc etc, and all close to the M6/M69/M1. Train is just over an hour to Euston. BHX is half an hour away.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 06/04/2021 08:10

Loads of places.
Our 4 bed, 3 reception room large detached house with large garden, garage and drive for 3 cars was £300k 3 years ago. Nice village in the east mids, excellent transport links.

FedNlanders · 06/04/2021 08:13

Suffolk has loads for that.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 08:16

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

You will get loads of people saying "the north/Lancashire/yorkshire/the midlands".

My family are from lancs and west mids.

The reality is it's like anywhere else - the naice parts are still relatively expensive. The cheaper towns are often very deprived, with few well paid work opportunities. My family are from Burnley which is very cheap but I personally wouldn't choose to move there myself.

But there are also endless places in between the poorer parts of Burnley and prime Cheshire or the Leeds/Harrogate/Wetherby 'Golden Triangle' where there are thousands of houses that meet the OPs requirements in good areas.
JustMeAndWheatley · 06/04/2021 08:17

Some parts of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. In the less nice parts you’d get one for much less than that, and in the nicest areas you’d only get a three bedroom for that price.

Sorry @ro198, only just saw this. I have found detached 4 beds with a garage in Tadley, Basingstoke, Southampton. Quite a few places.

This one for example

South West and Wales.
DP just sold his 5 bed detached with 3 reception rooms and garage for £380,000.

You can have my 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom (plus cloakroom), 2 reception rooms, garage, drive for two cars, garden and open aspect on two sides with no development potential as we overlook a churchyard! We'll be looking to get £350-360k and are in coastal south Devon.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 06/04/2021 08:22

I'm in Nottinghamshire and there's loads of detached houses available that have all those features, usually priced between 275k and 400k depending on how close to Nottingham city centre you look.

Just an example,

Staffordshire, DD has just bought a big 4 bed detached with a garage and big garden in a nice village with an outstanding primary 2 mins away for £268k.

Most of NI

5 bed detached 319,950

It's a nice place to live but won't have lots of jobs. And they are mainly public service jobs. Schools ok but without many professionals not a lot of competition for DCs.

I was looking at that one yesterday, pic 12, several short people in the house! (Childminder?)

wonderstuff · 06/04/2021 08:35

We are an hour from London on the train and in catchment for good schools and 4 bed detached probably start at 500k here, so I'd say most of the UK would be below 450k.

orangecinnamon · 06/04/2021 08:36

@Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo

That Havant one in Hampshire (page 4-can’t quote as already quoting) is only just over 1223 sq feet! And it is in Leigh Park.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/10481926#/
Though searching for other detached new builds in Hampshire, maybe that isn’t so bad for £442k as this linked one is very similar for almost £600k.

Even in what looks to be a less desirable area with hardly any outside space and not what anyone pictures when they hear, ‘detached’ is over £450k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/103873958#/

This in Aldershot is £500k and as far as I can wrk out, Aldershot and Leigh Park are areas that are much cheaper than anywhere else. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/71291853#/

I don’t think Hampshire really does have anything.

Of course it does...just not anywhere for you. These are just normal areas with normal people in.
Throwntothewolves · 06/04/2021 08:39

Scotland outside of the cities, and even then you probably can get a 4 bed detached in the suburbs (well maybe not Edinburgh)

m0therofdragons · 06/04/2021 08:40

South Somerset and even Kent round Folkestone / Hawkinge area. Basically everywhere except London.

South East - Ipswich

AdriannaP · 06/04/2021 08:45

Staffordshire

wonderstuff · 06/04/2021 08:46

Just did a search, Andover, Basingstoke, Newbury, Tadley and Thatcham all had houses in that price range.

Subordinateclause · 06/04/2021 08:47

Maybe not Edinburgh?! I'd say definitely not Edinburgh. Scottish Borders or Midlothian yes.

The okay but not lovely parts of Sheffield / Chesterfield / east side of the peaks area.
