So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

@Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo

That Havant one in Hampshire (page 4-can’t quote as already quoting) is only just over 1223 sq feet! And it is in Leigh Park.

Though searching for other detached new builds in Hampshire, maybe that isn’t so bad for £442k as this linked one is very similar for almost £600k.

Even in what looks to be a less desirable area with hardly any outside space and not what anyone pictures when they hear, ‘detached’ is over £450k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/103873958#/

This in Aldershot is £500k and as far as I can wrk out, Aldershot and Leigh Park are areas that are much cheaper than anywhere else. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/71291853#/

I don’t think Hampshire really does have anything.

Leigh park is known as the biggest council estate in Europe. Nothing wrong with that but not seen as a desirable area by locals. Has a lovely accent attached to it though, as Hampshire accent that sounds similar to Dorset. It’s higher crime than other areas of Hampshire, but closeish to Portsmouth. You’d be pretty much living in Havant, which is pretty run down in the high street but does have a big supermarket and other biggish shops in a retail park area. It’s also nearish Chichester, as it’s on the border of West Sussex really. That info may be out of date as I haven’t lived there for a while, but that’s what it was known as.

In relation to Wales, there are jobs for non welsh speakers. Partly depends where. You’re more likely to find them in Cardiff etc whereas if you’re in a welsh speaking village, it’s more likely welsh speaking is desired if not required.

Pembrokeshire. This one has a log cabin in the garden that could be used for holiday lets, or as a home office. Is a few minutes from the beach.

Narberth Road, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, SA70

If you love wales then try Shropshire, it’s on the border but a beautiful county in its own right with no motorways, so it’s pretty unspoilt. Here is one of my favourites for 450k:

Alberbury, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Most of Scotland including fashionable areas with good schools around Glasgow. Not city centre or fashionable Edinburgh neighborhoods.

New build 4 bed Barratt homes with integral garage are 315-360k depending on design and plot. Less for most existing developments. Extended 4/5 bed on established friendly cul de sac around £300k. 10 miles from central Glasgow with good road links.

Falkirk (realistic for Edinburgh and Glasgow commutes) more like £250k.

harridan50 · 06/04/2021 07:53

Bidford on avon Warwickshire

Saltyslug · 06/04/2021 07:55

Pembrokeshire would be my dream

frumpety · 06/04/2021 07:55

There are loads of 4 bed detached new builds in a 10 mile radius of Harrogate for under 450k. Easy commuting distance to Leeds and York.

village life, children roam free a lot, good links by train and road nearby, London one hour from Banbury

APurpleSquirrel · 06/04/2021 07:56

Mid-Devon & lots of parts of Somerset

Darbs76 · 06/04/2021 07:59

North Wales. I grew up there, type in CH5 - you’ll get a 4 bed detached for 300k or less. 15 mins drive from Chester, 40 mins to Liverpool. North wales coast on your doorstep.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 06/04/2021 07:59

I'm originally from Oxford but I've lived in Derbyshire now for most of my life. 450k would buy you a lovely house in most parts of Derbyshire. We're in a village in South Derbyshire - it's really nice, lovely community feel and good transport links. The accent took me a while to get used to...

Ragwort · 06/04/2021 07:59

Herefordshire/Welsh borders? We are not far from the Cotswolds - five bed, detached house with double garage - about £350k.

frumpety · 06/04/2021 07:59

I know you would prefer detached but for 100k under what you want to pay , I would buy this one for the location alone.

Re speaking Welsh. Fewer than 30% of people in Wales speak Welsh. I live in Cardiff, the only Welsh speakers I know are DD’s two Welsh language teachers. Where my ILs live, in West Wales, it’s very rare to hear Welsh spoken.

What field do you work in that Welsh would be required?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 06/04/2021 08:00

I moved to Bournemouth just before christmas and paid 425k for exactly what you've described in your OP

Darbs76 · 06/04/2021 08:01

This one is 390k (CH5) - so much there for under 450k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/96529418#/

LovingBob · 06/04/2021 08:03

Loads in Northamptonshire

PiersMorganBigMLittleOrgan · 06/04/2021 08:03

In the south? Around Swindon.

There's a reason [for] that !

Is there @ameliajanes?

On the edge of the Cotswolds and the South Wessex Downs
Some beautiful outlying villages (the houses, bare within the OPs price range)
Some great schools
Within an hour of Bristol, Reading, Cheltenham and London
Ok, awful town centre but since every district has a Village Centre, as well as proximity to the above, you rarely need to go there
Lots of parks, garden and museums
Not a million miles away to the M5 and within spitting distance of the M4

Could easily get a detached, 2 reception room etc 4 bed house there for the money the OP is describing, plus change.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Darbs76 · 06/04/2021 08:03

I grew up in North wales - Cheshire borders (CH5), no-one speaks Welsh there. You learn Welsh in schools but I don’t know anyone who speaks Welsh at home. Clearly some parts of Wales do but very much depends. That part of Wales doesn’t require Welsh speaking for jobs

PiersMorganBigMLittleOrgan · 06/04/2021 08:04

the houses there are within...

TroysMammy · 06/04/2021 08:04

Swansea

TroysMammy · 06/04/2021 08:07

@ArtistInResidence I've lived in Wales all my life and so have a lot of other people without having to speak Welsh to get a job Confused

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/04/2021 08:07

We viewed a new build 4 bed detached, with garage for... £240k. In Doncaster.

We chose an older ,3 bed with larger rooms and better school catchment a few miles away. (First school was perfectly fine btw!). And no 11+ to worry about (honestly don't get why that's an advantage for the majority of other schools are poor).

Good access to A1 and mainline rail. Countryside. M62.
But obviously not fashionable...

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/04/2021 08:07

You will get loads of people saying "the north/Lancashire/yorkshire/the midlands".

My family are from lancs and west mids.

The reality is it's like anywhere else - the naice parts are still relatively expensive. The cheaper towns are often very deprived, with few well paid work opportunities. My family are from Burnley which is very cheap but I personally wouldn't choose to move there myself.

swiftt · 06/04/2021 08:08

6 bed detached house with an annexe for 250k here - central Scotland.
