Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

Pretty much everywhere that I have friends and family that own houses. I have a three bed detached which I bought for less than half of that in a popular area with an easy commute to a major UK city, it’s got an extra room in the loft which the teenagers use so it’s very like a four bed but not allowed to say it is one on paper.

Parts of Lancashire.

North East

Scottish Borders, an hour away from Edinburgh. No chance of getting it in Edinburgh, though!

Northern Ireland

Huge huge swathes of Scotland. 6 miles from Glasgow on the East side you could do what you described for just over half that 5 years ago. Prices have gone up a bit but not that much.

Bedford and bedfordshire, MK, parts of Devon, parts of kent.

Lancashire. I actually live in one of the most expensive areas of Lancashire and you can easily get an amazing 4 bed detached for £450k, more likely £375-400.

My town in the Cotswolds, just about, though perhaps not for much longer. In commuting distance to Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Gloucester or Cheltenham.

New/recent builds are more expensive, but there are small numbers like mine built in the 70s, low maintenance and with big rooms, for sale for about £400 - £425k.

MichelleScarn · 05/04/2021 23:08

Also all of Scotland? Nope, but yes some areas...
whispers we've even got that there WiFi in most places now...

ArwenTheGreat · 05/04/2021 23:09

Herefordshire and neighbouring parts of Gloucestershire. (Not towards the Cotswolds though)

Good road links too if you choose location well, eg Ross on Wye to Birmingham/ Bristol/ Cardiff are all 1hr ish. Where I am is a bit more rural so not quite so easy but there are some really lovely houses around.

Bairnsmum05 · 05/04/2021 23:10

Southside of Glasgow you'd get a detached in certain areas 😁

SarahAndQuack · 05/04/2021 23:11

Erm, most places?

It might not be as nice as you'd like or in as nice an area as you wish, but I think you're really only ruling out London and parts of the SE for this.

RampantIvy · 05/04/2021 23:12

I'm in South Yorkshire. You can get a 5 bedroom house for that round here.
