So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

@GenderApostate19

Staffordshire, DD has just bought a big 4 bed detached with a garage and big garden in a nice village with an outstanding primary 2 mins away for £268k.
Yes this! My friend sold a house she inherited in Staffordshire for £365K: 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, huge garden, double garage, detached, home office. 90mins to Euston by train if someone needs to go to London occasionally.

We're in Warwickshire and plenty like that around here. 1hr train to london, 2 hours to the coast, easily accessible from all parts of the country. Love where we live and lots of things to do. We have a 3 bed with garage, large garden and 3 car drive for £350k

Jonnywishbone · 06/04/2021 08:48

Medway in Kent, 45 minutes on the train to several stations in London, it has 6 grammar schools too.

BuckysArm · 06/04/2021 08:48

Suffolk. There’s an immaculate five bed with a huge garden on my road up for £385k - if you’re happy to skip Aldeburgh/Southwold and the like (where you’ll pay over the odds) you can find some beautiful homes.

dottiedodah · 06/04/2021 08:50

I think you will struggle in the south of England .Maybe the midlands ? Quick google of Hampshire didnt bring up very much under 500k

Formulation123 · 06/04/2021 08:54

Yorkshire!

ILoveAnOwl · 06/04/2021 08:54

If you like Wales, why not try Herefordshire? It's only just across the boarder. Only city is Hereford (which barely counts) but you're within an hour of Birmingham, Bristol and Worcester.

tabulahrasa · 06/04/2021 08:58

@MintyMabel

not city centre... but perfectly nice areas.

We obviously have a different view of "nice area"

I'm in the North west and I cant even find a 3 bed semi for that much. I'm not in a posh town either.

Biker47 · 06/04/2021 09:01

My house was £250k, in the North East.

Teesel · 06/04/2021 09:01

Rutland?

Here's one in Oakham, but honestly there are loads.

Very low crime, Leicester, Peterborough and Nottingham all close by. The beautiful Stamford just down the road and Uppingham too. Good schools. And that kind of wealthy, country, rural vibe. Sophisticated but not not flashy.

Coles85 · 06/04/2021 09:02

I am absolutely shocked at the number of people who have suggested "all of Scotland". Ha! Clearly you've never tried to buy a 4 bed property in a relatively decent area in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen...

Where we live, that wouldn't get you a 3 bed terraced house. It might get you a 1 or 2 bedroom flat in the New Town.l of Edinburgh.

The OP could certainly get what she's looking for in some areas or commuter type new builds, not doubt about that, but it's a little offensive to claim that the whole of Scotland is "cheap". And surely if you're encouraging someone to move to a place they've never been, they'll want to be in a "nice" area?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 06/04/2021 09:02

There are 2 really nice 5 bed detached houses in my town up just now, one outside the town, one in a nice established housing estate, but both very private. One for 350k and one 360k. That's Ayrshire in scotland.

Some places in the Midlands you won’t find a 4 bed for under £450 - we are in Rugby and prices have shot up as we are only 50mins from Euston.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 06/04/2021 09:06

Could any of the posters assuring everyone that you can get that in Edinburgh please send me a link? I’ve been actively looking for much less than that (not necessarily detached, no need for garage, 3 beds would be fine) for five months now and it’s either 4 miles from city centre, or a new build with a postage-stamp garden and the living room upstairs because the footprint is so small! I’m now looking for a flat.

Wouldn't most people count a house 4 miles from the centre of Edinburgh as 'in Edinburgh'? As in if you worked in that area, it would be a suitable place to live.

You could probably claim to not be able to find a 4 bed detached in pretty much any city if you limited yourself to city centres and/or ultra prime areas, but the reality is that, most places except London and some parts of the SE you can get a 4 bed detached in a nice area that's a short commute to the city centre for under £450k.
