So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

I looked up Chorlton too. I used to live there.

Crazy prices for terraces.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 08/04/2021 20:19

@Zolrets

This thread is crazy. So many of the areas mentioned simply do not have this type of stock available! I just looked up Chorlton in Manchester as I used to live there and there are 6 properties that meet this criteria at ANY price! You can’t readily buy a 4 bed detached because they are not a substantial part of the stock not because they are outside the 450k price band. The houses there are Victorian terraces, ex local authority semi’s, 1950’s semi’s, flats... 4 bed detached was a common build later part of twentieth century and early 21st. If areas were built up by then, they simply havent been built in any numbers.
I agree - I mentioned upthread that criticising a house for not being in the city centre is madness, as there is little/no detached housing stock in most city centres. If you want a 4 bed detached, it has to be further out by definition, because that's where they are.
fizbosshoes · 08/04/2021 20:22

Someone on a different thread was looking for a detached house with train link to London. Someone suggested Brighton. DH had a flat in Brighton before we got married so I've been there loads of times and I cant remember ever noticing any detached houses at all!

MummyJ12 · 08/04/2021 20:38

No one on this thread has criticised a house for not being in the city centre @ReceptacleForTheRespectable. We were saying that you wouldn’t expect to be in the city centre. On that we all agree.
You posted earlier that you had this fabulous house with two en-suites that you sold for less that 450k in York in 2019 and you reckon there are still loads of houses out there like it. I’m sorry but you’re wrong about this. When you were asked for links you couldn’t find any houses of this specification. You can’t then go agreeing with other posters saying, ooh why can’t people look past decor, or the amount of en-suites etc because your point earlier was exactly that of the above. It’s great that you are championing York as a great place to live, it really is! But the market is crazy in York and the reality is that you don’t get massive amounts for your money here.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 08/04/2021 21:37

How many houses even have 2 en-suites? How much housing stock is like that, and what percentage likely to be on sale at any given time? Is that seriously what you've taken from my posts?

My point wasn't "look, you can buy this exact house", it was just that there's plenty out there. Which there is.

Your view was that any 4 bed detached in York for

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 08/04/2021 21:45

And actually, why is it wrong to wonder why people can't look past decor?

When I buy a house the things I care most about are the fundamental structure and plot (is it in good condition, how much space is there etc.) and the area. The things you can't change.

Ideally, it would be nice to only choose from houses decorated to my taste, but in reality it would be mad to be put off a long term home on the basis of the wallpaper. Aside from the fundamentals, everything else can be changed.

In fact, I would 100% rather buy a house with 70s/80s floral carpets that I can remove without guilt, than one that has recently been 'developed' (aka done up on the cheap for a quick profit) and has brand new cheap beige carpets that I don't like.

MummyJ12 · 08/04/2021 21:52

Please point me to my post where I have said anywhere in York is a rough area?
Yes, there are areas that are less desirable here. However, I have not posted anything like “oh, but this is in a rough area”
You were the one to post about the house you’d sold with “two en-suites”! So of course I took that from your post. It is what you posted, if it’s not relevant or as you quite rightly now ask, “how many houses even have two en-suites” then why even mention it? Hmm

MummyJ12 · 08/04/2021 22:05

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable

Oh, and 3 of the 4 beds were large doubles. Two with en-suite.

But yeah, there's nothing available in York at that budget at all... Confused

You can’t post these things and not be called out on them. Sorry Confused
Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/04/2021 23:06

MummyJ12 Stop with with the confrontational comments ending with “ sorry”. Why sorry? You’re clearly not or you wouldn’t gave brought it up.
Even I can work out that’s not the context ReceptacleForTheRespectable was writing about.

MummyJ12 · 08/04/2021 23:29

I simply do not like to be misquoted. Nowhere on this thread have I reasoned that a property priced as such because it is in a “rough area”. I am not being confrontational, completely the opposite. I have only highlighted the contradictions in some members’ posts. I was not the one questioning posts and making accusations if you read the thread....

MummyJ12 · 08/04/2021 23:34

*that a property is priced as such.
I meant to put! Sorry, I’m tired! I need to go to bed! Night all....

bigbadbedknobs · 09/04/2021 11:08

Yorkshire, my parents' house sold not long ago, 4 bed, 2 bathrooms, downstairs loo, utility, detached garage, open plan downstairs beyond the kitchen, dining room divided off by a wall, rest of the large living area all open plan. Garden [although not huge], sold for 00k less than you say. extended victorian coach house

bigbadbedknobs · 09/04/2021 11:09

one hundred k not 00k

tiredmum2468 · 09/04/2021 13:32

I'd say Lincolnshire is a good bet it's nice and house prices are reasonable

You can commute to London from Newark and Grantham quickly and benefit from much cheaper housing but London salaries which is a win win situation.

We are between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire and Lots of friends benefit from this and it's a good standard of living. You can always stay in London if you need to occasionally but now especially with more home working - people are also saving on huge travel costs with train fares too.

My neighbour is a PA at a law firm who will now be permanently at home. Salary £40k
Lincoln or Nottingham she'd get about £20-23k
That's a huge difference isn't it?

Livandme · 10/04/2021 21:47

Skipton, N Yorkshire.
Lots of access to Dales / lakes / Northumberland.

frumpety · 10/04/2021 22:21

Northallerton, N.Yorks, plenty of 4 bed detached for 450k.

frumpety · 10/04/2021 22:34

Doer upper near Pickering

SarahAndQuack · 10/04/2021 23:13

If you're near Pickering, there is absolutely no need to buy a doer-upper to get 4 bed for 450k! There are a lot of large newbuilds for that price; you could also get these:

frumpety · 11/04/2021 08:43

True SarahAndQuack, but that doer upper could be gorgeous don't you think ?

frumpety · 11/04/2021 09:25

Not a doer upper Smile

SarahAndQuack · 11/04/2021 12:21

Oh, absolutely! It just caught my eye - I'm currently house hunting in that area. My budget is nowhere near 450. But I have seen some really lovely places (which tend to get snapped up) for 450 (I look at them when I'm fantasy shopping! Grin).

80sMum · 11/04/2021 12:29

Here's a nice one!.

If that were in the area where I live, it would be at least double the price!

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 11/04/2021 17:27

Certainly NOT here! (CI)
