Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

Parts of Cheshire, Staffordshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire..

Toilenstripes · 06/04/2021 02:27

Shropshire would be a good bet.

My house,small village in the Midlands.Commutable to Birmingham ,Detached 4bedrooms,2shower rooms,1 bathroom,study,double garage,about £350k.

For £450k,you would get another storey,1or 2 bedrooms and another bathroom and a detached garage, mine is attached.

17bluebirds · 06/04/2021 02:43

650 houses in Hampshire meet this criteria, according to rightmove ( well parking, not sure if that garage or driveway)

I don't think all jobs in Wales require Welsh speakers. I've visited lots of businesses all over Wales and it's only been certain areas where Welsh is prominent at all.

Anyway, here's a selection of 4 bed detached under budget, all in desirable areas of Leeds.

Staffordshire, most by me are around 300k, for 450k you could get a beautiful house in a more rural part of the area

LondonMiss · 06/04/2021 03:55

You really don’t need Welsh to consider Wales! I don’t actually know that many people that would be fluent enough to use it day to day.

MagpieSong · 06/04/2021 03:56

West Wales. The whole of Wales actually. We’re in a 5 bed detached period cottage with land attached and it cost us just over £200,000.

A question like this is honestly the same as how long bus piece of string. Two things need to be specified. £ per sq.ft. You can get 4 bed detached houses sized at less than 1400 sq.ft or less, which honestly is a con if you are going to call that a 4 bed detached. Bedrooms that can only fit a double bed and no wardrobes, kitchens the size of a shoe box, gardens with a lawn so small that you couldn’t kick about a ball, and detached in name only there is a gap big enough to only for air to pass between the external walls of neighboring houses. Like I say, that’s not a detached house, it’s a con.
The other thing is the condition of the house. So many coming onto the market where the owners haven’t touched it since the 70s, would need £50k spending on it just to bring it up to basic modern standards. Sure you could live in it as it is, but would you want to just because it is detached.
Finally the location.
So the true price is reflected in £ per sq.ft considering the condition. And honestly there aren’t many places south of Northumberland where you can get a decent 4 bed detached (not a rabbit hutch) in a nice neighborhood for less then £450k.

If you love Wales, but need to work in a non-Welsh-mandatory job then you can either live near the border in Wales and commute to England or vice versa.

So Shropshire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Powys, Cheshire - all of which you can get a beautiful detached 4-bed for your price.

If you’re only seeing Welsh-speaker jobs advertised it’s either teaching or government/civil service or similar? There are loads of jobs where it’s not a requirement but a ‘plus’.

youmakemydreamscometrue · 06/04/2021 04:06

Edinburgh, fairly decent areas too and reasonably newly built.

Midlothian/East Lothian/borders.

Scottish central belt. In fact probably most places in scotland

OxanaVorontsova · 06/04/2021 04:14

There are 1000s listed in desirable areas with access to great countryside, outstanding schools and transport links. There are plenty available on Rightmove in Wiltshire, Northamptonshire, Kent and so on. It’s a lazy question.

I've just searched for 4 bed detached houses within 20 miles of me (Salisbury) and it brings up over 800. Loads with garages too

Pleasegodgotosleep · 06/04/2021 05:58

Almost all of scotland excluding the larger cities - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen - also good state schools and excellent universities. Amazing scenery and empty out door space. But weather is worse and wages are lower fits lower cost of living.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 06/04/2021 06:06

Barnard Castle and Darlington because I live in one!

thefishthatcouldwish · 06/04/2021 06:20

Wales most if not all parts. No you don’t need to talk Welsh to get a job here but there are parts of Wales where being Welsh speaking is advantageous.

rwalker · 06/04/2021 06:34

Burnley Lancashire you could by 1/2 the town for 450k

Armi · 06/04/2021 06:39

Lincolnshire. It’s a bit of a rum place, but surprisingly beautiful. Lincoln is wonderful.

IndiaMay · 06/04/2021 06:39

@17bluebirds tbh im stunned at that! Hampshire? Everywhere near me if you're looking at a 4 bed, 2 reception rooms, detached (let alone garage) you're looking at £450,000 minimum. You could get under that with it either being a semi or having just a living room and a kitchen/diner and no second reception room but literally only just

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/04/2021 06:41

Where I live you can get that for £300k. East midlands.

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/04/2021 06:42

Lots of places in Yorkshire.
