Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

and probably all of Scotland.

Hardly. You could find them in any of the big cities but if you want a decent area, they will be difficult to get.

Loads in Dorset, both urban and rural (including villages on rail lines)

Busygoingblah · 06/04/2021 00:11

Most of Norfolk

Derbee · 06/04/2021 00:16

Derbyshire, with easy access to the Peak District

[quote CrazySheepLady]You can do better for less money in the north east. Wynyard is considered pretty exclusive.

Crap secondary schools, though.

Kidderminster, Worcestershire, in middle of 5 counties plus near Birmingham but lots of woods/scenery around

Susie477 · 06/04/2021 00:19

Odd question!

450k is more than enough to buy a 4 bedroom detached house with a garden in the vast majority of the U.K. The exceptions being London & the South East of England plus a few localised hot-spots, eg the Cheshire triangle, Harrogate, Clifton, touristy parts of Devon & Cornwall etc etc.

ikeepseeingit · 06/04/2021 00:21

@HollowTalk

The Wirral. Easily. Lovely houses. Grammar schools. Countryside. Beaches. Close to Liverpool and Manchester and Chester.
Yep! Best place for everything, you can get fields, lakes, woods or beaches. Grammar schools. Easy train and travel links to Manchester, Chester, and Liverpool. Even a new build on the Wirral is £350k for a four-bed detached with a drive and garage and older houses can have more land and cost less.
TableFlowerss · 06/04/2021 00:22

Loads and load and loads of places up North. Rightmove max price £300k boom there you go!

Rachellow · 06/04/2021 00:25

Vast majority of Northern Ireland, except for certain parts of South and East Belfast and Holywood direction

BanditoShipman · 06/04/2021 00:28

@Eccle80

Worcestershire. Easy access to both the countryside and to Birmingham.
Yes ours was circa £400k and is 5 bed detached, garage, big garden, lots of reception rooms, kitchen is 20 foot odd, as is living room and separate dining room. Nice area. Worcester very good for links to London and birmingham

Whoever said their friends have bought a 5 bed detached for 200k in Glasgow I need to see this place! Where on Earth is it? My entire life spent here and all the knowledge that brings cannot even begin to imagine that this is possible. If it was I'd be selling my far more expensive 3 bed end terrace and moving there!

I was just about to ask this!!! Where in earth is it.

@MintyMabel
Stand by what I posted earlier. I am Scottish I know it covers a large area but I've done my research as want to move back home and virtually in every area you could get what OP wants and more in some cases.

tabulahrasa · 06/04/2021 00:34

You can definitely get that in Edinburgh for that price, not city centre... but perfectly nice areas.

Go a bit outside of it and you could buy an even bigger house... or 2 houses if you’re not set on a garage and would settle for just a driveway.

Heartofglass12345 · 06/04/2021 00:37

Haha I have a 4 bed detached house with garage in South Wales valleys and we paid £155,000 for it

I bet you’ve got lovey views as well!

We obviously have a different view of "nice area"

Svalberg · 06/04/2021 00:50

The decent part of Nottingham has several well below £450k

GreyhoundG1rl · 06/04/2021 00:53

Surely you have a vague idea of where you'd actually like to live, op, rather than being completely led by house prices?!

Svalberg · 06/04/2021 00:54

I've just checked, 43 detached houses in West Bridgford under 450k, 4+ bedrooms, for sale, 18 of which aren't under offer

Returnoftheowl · 06/04/2021 01:02

Norfolk!

Not all the south east. I’m just under an hour by train to London and I found a place on Rightmove in a nearby village for that price. Hertfordshire is out but Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire it would be achievable.

Scunthorpe
