So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

Like this one. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/90488314
Thatcham is lovely too.

dotdashdashdash · 07/04/2021 19:21

Just checked our town in the north west and there's only 1 detached 4 bed with garage for that price.

It's on for £449,950, 2 of the bedrooms are 2.5*2.5m and it backs on to the sewage treatment plant Envy < not envy

caringcarer · 07/04/2021 19:21

In Bridlington, East Yorkshire you could buy a 12 bedroom Victorian detached with sea view for far less than that. I have been looking because I fancy a holiday home there by seaside.

caringcarer · 07/04/2021 19:27

@artistinresidence, my dd went to uni in Wales and learned to speak Welsh from her housemates. She carried on living there for another 8 years too. You could.learn to speak Welsh if you wanted to.

Wtfdidwedo · 07/04/2021 19:41

I'm intrigued what you do that would require Welsh language skills in South East Wales, past saying bore da when answering the phone.

SaltyAF · 07/04/2021 19:42

My 4 bed detached with garage, garden and parking would be less than £220k.

SouthernComforter · 07/04/2021 20:12

Loads of places! Even where I live in Sussex - proper commuter territory - there are 4-bed places on the market for £450k or under. Worthing, Eastbourne, probably even Horsham if you wanted to be closer to London. But you'd have to be in a position to move fast.

5 bed semi with garden £180k, Merseyside

Yourcatisnotsorry · 07/04/2021 20:50

Most places north of Watford which aren’t in a city centre/national park

Here's a 5 bed for £375k in Perthshire, Scotland. 5 miles from the city centre. 40 mins from Edinburgh.

You could spend your spare £75k on a rare stamp collection, and store them in the 5th bedroom. Or you could travel the world for a year and use the spare room to hold all the tacky souvenirs you bought that seemed like a good idea at the time.

City centres and ‘burbs are not well stocked with 4 bed detacheds with gardens. You can’t buy what isn’t there.

Manchester is a case in point. Terraces, flats and semis are what the stock is in Manchester City proper (Didsbury, Fallowfield, chorlton as well the the CBD) even out to greater Manchester areas, it’s mainly semi’s.

I moved from there to get a detached, amongst other reasons.Mid Cheshire, 4 bed detached places are numerous so they are relatively ‘cheap’. Supply and demand! The cheapest on right move is £180k. Plenty of change there for private school fees though the schools are generally good throughout Cheshire. For 410 what about this, in catchment for a Times top 50 primary... www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/78797187#/

North Northumberland. We had a 7 bed Edwardian hunting lodge with 18.5 acres sell for 450k so a 4 bed would be no problem!

@riceuten

Rant/

I'm laughing at people touting a "grammar school" system as a plus point. You do realise that 80% of kids in areas with them DON'T go to a grammar school and that secondary schools in these areas are hellish if by chance you PFB doesn't actually make the grade

/rant

Normally schools are good if the grammar school system is in place
Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 07/04/2021 22:29

@MichelleScarn ooh that's lovely!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 07/04/2021 22:32

Nowhere that I want to live, sadly. Just paid £750,000 for very average 4 bed semi in Hertfordshire, garage already converted, small garden, perfect location.

That was last summer though!

But maybe if you get lucky you just might find something...

Chester is lovely with lots of lovely villages around, Tattenhall, Tarporley, Christleton, Kelsall, Farndon. Good access to Wales, Lake District, Liverpool and Manchester.

Hartford and Davenham are also great and again good access to Liverpool and Manchester and a bit closer to the Peak District.

There are houses in you range also.

The Wirral has some lovely areas like Childer Thornton.
