Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

@HollowTalk

The Wirral. Easily. Lovely houses. Grammar schools. Countryside. Beaches. Close to Liverpool and Manchester and Chester.
YESSS!!! I found my people!!

5 bed detached house, 2 reception rooms and 3 bathrooms.
£295k in a beautiful area.

I'd never live anywhere else.

MarchingOnTogether · 07/04/2021 23:47

Yorkshire. My 4 bed detached was £239k 2 years ago.

subbysammiexoxo · 08/04/2021 00:38

Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Essex maybe in the right areas, Wales, All of Yorkshire etc

keffie12 · 08/04/2021 00:56

York North Yorkshire and Harrogate North Yorkshire. You would get a decent 4 bed for in the suburbs and nearby villages

hellsbells77 · 08/04/2021 04:39

I've noticed a few people mention Northamptonshire but you'd be hard pushed to get a decent 4 bed detached for that price. Maybe be in the less desirable places or in less convenient/accessable places but not in Northampton, much of the south of the county or the desirable villages. I know, we live here and we're struggling to find the next house! There's even attached houses near us that are that price of more. Prices seem to have increased by quite a bit fairly recently but we're only an hour out of London so I think that has had an affect.

BobISMyUncle · 08/04/2021 06:35

OOH!! Here! West Cambridgeshire!
Only an hour commute to London and close to Cambridge, (which is REALLY expensive housing). We border with Bedford, Northampton, Norfolk and Suffolk. We have lovely countryside as well. Not only that, because it's only a bit flat, you can see the enemy coming for miles and miles and miles and mi ......... !!

BobISMyUncle · 08/04/2021 06:37

OOH! Sorry! If you look on Right Move, put in postcode PE26, there's a house on there, just to give you an idea.
Good luck!!

Whoscoatsthatjacket · 08/04/2021 06:38

You can buy a 5 bedroom house in a lovely area here for £450,000. I’m in South Wales x

BobISMyUncle · 08/04/2021 06:39

Sorry! It's also close to Peterborough as well, another city. Sorry, I keep remembering things to tell you! No train to Cambridge, sadly, because that was voted "No", so we have a guided bus to Cambridge. There is, however, a train to Peterborough, which is only about 20 minutes commute.

WalkinginMemphis2 · 08/04/2021 07:23

The Wirral is really nice, DH has a big client in Liverpool and they keep trying to poach him, we keep looking there also Liverpool's ace!

I'd say practically anywhere but where you are now down to London and maybe Bristol and Edinburgh you'd struggle but even then you'd probably find something, it just might not be very exciting, we live in the north in a 'naice' village and there's plenty for 400/450 4 or 5 bed detached, they just tend to be 60's/70's/80's new builds so the bedrooms and kitchens tend to be quite small but decent sized gardens on lovely streets.

Luddite26 · 08/04/2021 07:29

Could get a decent pile for that money in Yorkshire best of all worlds up here. Expensive luxury and affordability.

Toooldforthisshit49 · 08/04/2021 07:29

@maddening some really nice houses there 👍

Archie2011 · 08/04/2021 07:38

Here in Swansea. You could buy a 4/5 detached in a nice area close to the beautiful beaches

Scottishskifun · 08/04/2021 07:51

@Lucyk1

Everywhere in Scotland!

You can get a 4 bedroom detached, huge garden, driveway...in a beautiful area for less than £200,000.

😂 Not in my part of Scotland you can't!

You would be lucky to get a 2 bed semi detached for under 200k!

Some parts of Scotland are pretty expensive! In my area (not central belt) you can get a detached previous new build for that but that's about it.

bexollie · 08/04/2021 07:59

My daughter lives in Nottm and she brought a four bed detached with garage and garden. It was less than 300k and there are good schools nearby and retail parks plus lovely walks on the doorstep.

I assume that you're being facetious, but even Mumsnet must be happy with some of these, all with BD postcodes.

Where are you currently and where do you want to be? You say there's an influx of people moving in from the SE so not there presumably.

Pea1985 · 08/04/2021 08:33

I would say a good chunk of the north! We live hear Warrington and you could get a 4 bed detached for around £350k. Similar in sone other areas of Cheshire. Also im originally from Yorkshire and housing is pretty cheap there too. I've always thought the southern house prices are nuts and the higher salaries aren't enough to match the house prices. We would never move down south as we'd have to live in a much smaller house. We bought our large 3 bed semi for £135k 7 years ago. Spent £40k on an extension so there's loads of space downstairs, so spent £185k all in. Its now worth around £220k. There's no way we could get anywhere near the same space. Also there are more companies moving well-paid jobs up north. My husband has just been offered a new job in Manchester and the salary is not far off London salaries for his role.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/04/2021 08:39

All of Yorkshire etc

But not significant parts of Sheffield

WalkinginMemphis2 · 08/04/2021 09:02

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow or anywhere you’d actually want to live in Harrogate, Ilkley, Skipton or York, and big chunks of Leeds.

Sorry, but this is just untrue. You may not have unlimited choice at that budget, but I have bot bought and sold 4 bed detacheds with garden and garage in nice areas in this vicinity for under £450k in the last 2 yrs, and there was plenty in this bracket.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 08/04/2021 09:21

When I say "in this vicinity", I sold in one of the places mentioned, and my search area for new houses included 3 of the places mentioned. All of them had plenty of choice at my budget, which happened to be £450k. (The 4 bed I sold was well under £450k)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/04/2021 09:24

But we’re they detached?

Your standards are clearly not as exacting as Memphis. After all, who'd want to slum it in areas where people can only afford to pay £450k for a large family home? Imagine how dreadful such people must be. Or you might be a whole mile from a full selection of appropriately naice amenities. Who could possibly live with such deprivation?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/04/2021 09:25

Arrrgh WERE
